Here is the latest collection of beautiful historic motor racing photos to be sent to me. This collection came about thanks to Allan Walton at New Zealand Classic Car magazine, who'd put the collections owner, Alan Smith, in touch with me. After I'd written a brief review of the 1967 NZ Saloon Car Championship for NZCC, reader Alan Smith spotted a couple of the photos used in the article that were supplied by Brett Young, taken at Levin in late 1966, and was sure they were his. This prompted him to delve into his own collection, long since stored away, to check.

In fact, the photos used in the article weren't Alan's, but the photo angles were very similar. Indeed, he and Brett may have bumped into each other trying to get their shots in! Its a small world when you think about it.

So from here, Alan offered to supply his photos for Roaring Season members and visitors to enjoy. And they're really superb images. Most are from Levin, during the 1966, 1967, and 1968 seasons, although a couple also look to be from Pukekohe.

They're almost all in colour, almost all taken either in the pits, or near the dummy grid. There are a few in here I'm really struggling to ID, so any help would be appreciated. There are only around 35 photos in the collection (unless Alan finds a few more stored away in shoe boxes), but they're a refreshing view on New Zealand motorsport history during the late 1960s.

Kicking things off here are two quite significant race cars from the 1966 New Zealand racing season. Paul Fahey's breadvan Lotus Anglia battled season long with the similar car of Dave Simpson for outright race wins and the championship. Ultimately it came up short, but at most events was the only car that could foot it with Simpson.

Meanwhile, Ivan Segedin's Mustang was the first Mustang to go circuit racing in New Zealand. Amazingly, both of these cars survive, and both were on display almost parked together at this years Denny Hulme Festival at Hampton Downs!

And speaking of Dave Simpson, here is his Lotus Anglia lined up alongside the amazing A40 of Kerry Grant. Note that Simpsons Anglia isn't fitted with its fastback roof section in this photo.

Another treasure trove for us to enjoy, thanks Alan
Seeing the Simpson Anglia in "standard" spec leads me to ask if someone can please tell me which of the Anglia's was first to go with the "breadvan" styling?

Re the fastback sections on the Lotus Anglia's, someone here may wish to correct me on this but I thought they both showed up at the NZIGP fitted with them for the first time. I think this led to questions about whether there were spy tactics going on between the two teams.

Never fails to amaze me the number of photo collections that are seeing the light of day on this website. Maybe they would have been lost forever if it wasn't for the Roaring Season. Great job Steve.

Both Ward (142) and Coppins (141) were entered in the Anglia at the November 1966 meeting. It would appear from the Motorman report that Ward did all the races though Coppins alone was entered in the final handicap race of the day.

A real mixed bag this one, and typical of Allcomer racing of the period. All I know about this photo is that its from Levin, from the 1966 season. I can see Rod Coppins' Zephyr Corvette in the background, but whose is the blue Anglia closest to camera? Dave Jurie raced an Anglia that looked quite similar to this, but I've never seen a photo of his car in this colour scheme, or with this number. Can anyone help?

I had to ask Greg Stokes about the '32 Ford coupe. Greg is a leading authority on old hot rods, which naturally spills over into hot rod race cars. Greg thinks its probably the old Garth Souness car. Obviously Souness was racing the Morrari in 1966, so its likely not him here. Greg thinks its possibly Ed Jensen?

I have a feeling the Jurie car was tan. I believe it ended up in the creek that ran along by the old pit entrance.

What can be seen of the date looks to me like Dec 65 which would make the date of the meeting 27 November 1965. If that's correct car 60 was C. Everson from Auckland.

The only Ford Corvette entered that day was driven by K. McGreal also from Auckland.

Presuming the C. Everson in the Anglia #60 is Cliff Everson, and it should be, he was a very clever and talented engineer and a pioneer of the properly done left to right hand drive conversions of USA cars and pickups, long before some of the others got involved.

Woah! I had no idea! I knew of this car, but didn't know it was the old Souness car. Its certainly pretty impressive, but its a shame it couldn't have been built from another car and the Souness car be restored to what it was. Each to their own though I guess.

That `56 Chev was one of Rod Coppins tow cars, John Ward was probably using it. That is my elder brother Peter standing on the trailer toolbox in the green jersey. When Rod went to Aussie to buy Big Petes Mustang, we had this Chev parked at home. Rod later sold it to Colin Weller, who at the time was working for John Riley, and Colin also used it as a tow car for his stockcars, then it disappeared. It`s probably still around as it was a real tidy car.

The number on the Mini looks like it could be 30 which would make the car P. W. Pascoe's 997.

If the cars are lined up in numerical order then the car between the Ferrari and the Mini would be Jack Oakley's U2 number 29. It certainly looks like a U2.

The only Anglia numbered in the thirties was M. A. Low's 1298cc car which was number 32.

Often times were required to. Made work a lot easier for marshals etc. Quite often there was a placard on the fence in front of where you had to be. A number of the lower key UK meets were still like that in the 80s. Prescott 50th anniversary was that way IIRC

Here is another I'm struggling with. Trying to put 2 and 2 together, I'll probably come up with 5, but here goes. The photo date says Jan 1966, so if the date was from when the photo was taken, rather than when it was developed, this is probably the Levin round of the 1966 Tasman Series. The red car in the background is number 17, which would be John Rileys Lotus-Climax. If the cars are pitted based on car number, and the white car next to the Riley Lotus is number 18, then could this mean the car pictured in the foreground is Ken Smiths Lotus 22? The motor is definitely a Ford. He usually preferred #11, but numbers were assigned in the Tasman Series. Any takers?

Thanks David, fantastic! Re the Lancer, I can't tell from this photo because the women crouching between the two cars is blocking the rear bodywork, but were the rear mudguards integrated into the bodywork, or bolt-ons as per the front? From this angle it appears the rear bodywork fans out rearwards to cover the rear wheels.

They were originally bolted on, but I think reworked by the time the above photo was taken

On the dummy grid at Levin, Frank Gardner in the Alec Mildren Brabham, and Jackie Stewart in the BRM. Gardney controlled the race from the start, broke the lap record by 2.1 seconds, but the transmission failed two laps from the end, gifting the win to the second BRM of Richard Attwood.

David, I was being a lazy git and referring only to the Shell Annual. Thanks for the correction.

Same event as above, moments later as the field files out onto the track.

Looks to be the Jim Palmer Lotus team in the pits at Levin. Can anyone confirm this?

The number on the nose in the background looks like 41, so would assume so.

The gentleman with the black glasses on the very left of the photo certainly looks like a Palmer (George I guess). Jimmy looks just like that now.

Jackie Stewart's BRM gets a push start as it enters the race track at Levin. Didn't these BRM's just have the most fantastic rear bodywork styling.

They were originally bolted on, but I think reworked by the time the above photo was taken it always had rear bodywork covering the tyres...originally with a boot which was shortened to a flat cut off...I have photos taken not long after Peter finished the build at Admiral Hill-climb...during my ownership the only body work changes were radiator slots on the top of the nose....I wonder if it is still around?

Hello Perry,

Terry Leighton and I were actually wondering if you were still around...pleased to hear that you are. Last I heard of the Lancer it was still with the chap who bought it off you. I can't remember his name but I used to see him driving it in Wellington. Now believe it's in Nelson.

Regards,

Russ Cunningham

It was advertised for sale by Ashley Malet in 1973, perhaps on your behalf, Perry?

This was taken at what I believe was the car's first appearance, in a WCC Levin sprint in August 1962. Maybe the bolts holding on the rear end are marks on the negative:)

The photo came from my camera - does that make me old?

I think Peter was still an engineering student at the time

do you have any later photos of when I was competing....Peter is still into cars on the Gold Coast....manufacturing and selling kits of GT40's/Cobras....probably the largest kit supplier in OZ...sells lots to the US but the currency exchange not helping at present.

No, seems it didn't take me long to realise I wasn't going to be a top-flight photographer (like Len Ransom, for example). Latest Lancer pic I have is from 1967

does anyone know what happened to Len's photo collection....there must be thousands around somewhere...I can't remember going to any event in the lower North Island when Len wasn't there snapping from the best position
