Magic photos there Ellis. Do you have any more info on the blue #8 in post 16, and the blue #3 in post 17? The #3 car looks like Bob Janes, but I assume this is a later owner given the BP signage and the Torana parked next to it, which would make this early 70s?

Steve Holmes
06-03-2011, 07:28 AM
I've always liked the cars that raced to Group 2 specs in the British Touring/Saloon Car Championship in the late '60s and early '70s. Camaros were quite popular, and there was even a Javelin that raced with moderate success. Several 1965/66 Mustang coupes were campaigned, plus three 1969/70 fastbacks, including one for Martin Birrane, one for Frank Gardner (both ex-US Kar-Kraft, and Gardners I understand was one of the '69 Bud Moore cars with '70 nose fitted), plus this car here for Dennis Leech.

Leech ran the car during the '70 season fitted with a 302 motor, then a larger 351 for '71. But in an effort for more power fitted a 429 big block Boss with self-built fuel injection for 1972. It probably seemed like a good idea at the time given the team were on a tight budget and the 429 would give them good power, but sadly it was not the success he hoped for. But it sure was a wild car, and looked great fitted with 15" wide rear wheels and 12" wide front wheels with spin-off's.

Boy, Don Elliot must have done an awful lot for motor racing in Tasmania. Did the Thomson Camaro replaced the Mustang in the Elliot stable? I hadn't realised the Mustang was a new car when built for racing. Must have been of the first racing Mustangs in Aus?

Has there been any progress on the Beechey Mustang restoration? I assume its being restored?

Without wanting to hi-jack the thread, but while on the subject of Beechey, has his '68 Camaro ever resurfaced?

Not heard any progress reports on the Mustang resto ex Beechey
I heard that the Beechey Camaro went back onto the road and ended up in NZ

To answer the Q re Elliot....
He had a large trucking business and numerous race cars.
I'll list some I recall.....

Holden Monopsto open wheeler
Jag SS 120?
GT Cortina...He raced this and then put Pare into it at about 16 yrs of age
Lotus Cortina ...new 65 and raced by Pare
Anglia Super...Pare
Mustang...Pare
69 XWGTHO Ph1, 70 XWGTHO Ph2, 71 XYGTHO Ph3...road cars that did a few Club days
Camaro ex Thomson....Pare
Charger ex McCormack...Edmondson (Pare may have had a drive or 2)
Elfin ME5...Pare...Bad crash (flipped) Baskerville and retired from racing
Cortina 440 2 Dr...Edmondson
Alfa Sports Sedan ..Repco V8...Edmondson...Aust Champ
Maybe others I dont recall immediately
Bought Elfin cars in 80's, managed by Edmondson

He took the Camaro to NZ after the Mustang and maybe also the Charger.

Pretty certain the Bud Moore '69 Mustang that Gardner raced in Europe in 1970 was destroyed (I think) in a loading accident at a shipping wharf.

The Frank Gardner pic looks like Brands Hatch, on the drop from Druids to Bottom (now Graham Hill) Bend, and the Follmer pic I think is Laguna Seca before the pit complex went in.

I believe there were 7 Kar-Kraft Mustangs built for the '69 Trans-Am season, plus 2 prototypes. Where did these 7 (9 including the prototypes) get to, and how many survived? I know that 2 of the Shelby cars are restored and racing in the US, along with 1 of the Bud Moore cars, and that the Allan Moffat car is with the Bowdens in Australia, but what happened to the rest of them?

TransamEd
06-11-2011, 03:49 AM
Hi there, as a short intro... I am the editor of www.ponysite.de and Steve pointed me to this page, so whenever I might have something of value (or think it is of value and you will correct me:), I will post here.

The survivors are pretty much covered VIN by VIN on my a.m. page (with a few drop outs due to lack of time for updating). Note that only a few were "moved" through Kar Kraft.

The Gardner car (or let's say what is left of it) had been indeed found a number of years ago acc. to the Bowdens, but paperwork and remainders needed to find a common home and then the decision how to deal with it took way more time.
The Bowdens image is in their automotive car care business connected to shiny cars and outstanding racecars, not a "something", which means presenting it requires some thorough thinking and timing and let's say "detailing".

Thanks also for the Leech car picture. I am just in touch with a former mechanic in the UK, who shoehorned the 429 in it. The car belongs to Craig Olson today.

The Beechey car is indeed planned out for restoration. The new owner is also seeking for more pics of the Bryan Thomson's usage. If you - Ellis F. - have more pics of its 67 livery, it would be very much appreciated. I was about to contact the well-known UK picture treasurers, as I think I had seen some while browsing their boxes at various UK events.

Love the pics Timbo. The blue '69 fastback is interesting. Is this the car raced at some stage by Jeff Barnes? It had a very similar paint scheme (modelled off Allan Moffats '79 Camel Filters XC Falcon Bathurst colours) to George Shewierys ex-Jim Richards 69 at one point, confusing many people into thinking it was the same car.

timbo61
06-14-2011, 08:39 PM
I do remember the Barnes car with the paint scheme you mention, but have no photo's of it. The add on flared guards and front spoiler look similar though. I think this car was driven by Reda Awadallah. His family owns Blue Haven Pools and he did drive Sports Sedans later on with Blue haven Pools sponsorship.
Mean while here are a few Trans-Am Mustangs.

Steven Johnson in one of the first Trans-Am cars to make it over from N.Z. Shane Drake drove another one at the same Eastern Creek meeting.

The last saloon race of the day was an absoloute cracker. Leo unilaterally handicapped himself back to the short straight between the hangers and Bomb Bay. (Despite the exclamations from the Announcer that something was wrong there was no sign of Leo doing anything except sitting waiting for the flag to fall) When the flag fell Leo set off like a scalded cat. The sight of him passing slower (ie every other) cars especially down that long back straight was just awesome. From memory (actual results may vary:) ) he did win. As a demonstration of the superiority of PDL 2 it was most impressive. Perhaps even more impressive than watching Keke Rosberg annihilate Bobby Rahal and co in the Lady Wigram Trophy.

Lee, great post! PDL II was an incredible machine. It would have been great to have seen the car race internationally a little more than it did. Its one of those cars that left a big impression. Amazing to think it only raced for one full season during 1976/77 then four events two years later, and that was it! Very short career. Leo really drove the car well.

That guy in the orange Mustang always seems to be locking brakes or 3-wheeling. He must be a real hard charger!

Steve,I really like 'Chargers',but that guy in the orange one really stuffed up,he's modified it so much that it looks like a 'Bloody' Mustang, some people have no taste, waste of a good Charger!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!................................:omMJ:eek::confused::rolleyes::p:)

Funny you should say that Myles. I was at a race meeting a few years ago and there was a little kid with his dad ogling Dales car. Then the kid said to his dad, "It looks like the Dukes Of Hazzard Car". Dale was wrapped when I told him that!

With close to 350 cu in, triple plate clutch, MSD Magnesium this & that, 6 pot calipers, alloy diff head, 16 x 10 rims it hardly qualify's as a Boss 302 anymore, more like a hot rod!:):)

One day there may surface a video with an orange Boss Mustang losing it under brakes for turn 1 Manfeild and completing a beautiful 360 before powering on..... Seems to have a bit of bother with front brake bias from time to time!

Win Lotto!!! Rod, i can write a book on all these damn Mustangs, bought my first one(68 GT Fastback) in 1977 as a kid(from Jack Nazer) but didn't know it at the time!! and have owned over 30 of them!! imported quite a few over the last 25 years!! Dean Camerons #389 Mustang was my first race car, one i didn't build but was a early pre 65 car back in the late 80's/early 90's, i owned it around 95, built the Daryl Narain Mustang next, bearly got it finished and Rick Cooper(Taupo Major) wipped his cheque book out, damn!! them built the blue one Hoffman races, at least i got to race that one 3 times before he got me!! built the Nigel MacDonald 67 Fastback as a job and then my current Mustang, which by the way is a factory Calypso Coral(red orange) 69 Boss 302, of the 1630 odd made this is one of only 3 and has a real interesting history!! The only reason i still own it today is i refuse to sell it, had several offers but at 51 im sick of building them(for the moment anyway) i thought it was about time i went out and had some fun!! Shipped it to America and racing it last year was a highlite, Sears Point and Thunderhill, Steve done a article in NZV8(i think) some months ago!! Im over the "hard core beat to death" racing now and prefer to just do Classic and Historical events, way more fun!! Enjoy

Dale, don't we wish we kept somethings, those are my daughters who are 23 and 21 now, and my poor dog is way gone along with the Car. The old story " you only bring it out some Sundays and then you spend the rest of the day cleaning it and then back in garage and covered over", well at least with a boat we all got to go fishing and the ears recovered.

Anybody know what became of the Roger Bohl Ford Rally team Mustang door number #16 from the 1970 Rally Internacional de las 24 Horas. I remember a rallye team car being on sale a few years ago, but did not preserve the pics, nor can't find it on the web again.

Some Puke Mustang shots from the Colin Barrie collection. They use to get good crowds in those days - even a Light 15 Citroen in the car park.

This is amazing Roger. Do you have any more info on this car? How did it perform as a rally car? Looks like it still has all its lower bodywork trim. That couldn't have lasted long. The safety belt worn by the driver looks like the standard Mustang safety belt, rather than a racing harness. This must have been quite a standard car?

These are great photos. The early Mustang race cars always looked good from the low front-on angle at speed as per the first couple of shots. This angle always seemed very popular with motorsport photographers.

Yes, they looked good from that angle with the nose lifting as they accelerated and the car a bit (or in some cases, a lot) sideways.

I can tell from the front fender park lamp, sill molding and wheel hub caps that this is a 70 Mach 1, unusal choice for a Rally car!!!

The "nose in the air" sideways come performance driving was very mustang wasn't it!! it really made them look on the edge, and most of the time they were!! Today we know this don't work so my Boss for instance has heavy Springs, Shocks, Chassis mod's, etc to get optimum performance!! but not as spectacular alass!!

This awesome shot was posted on our Facebook page by Peter Lyall, with the description: "On display at Riccarton Mall in Christchurch on Jan 17th 1975 looking great before its final race".

This was just prior to the 1975 Wigram event, which would also be the very last race Allan Moffat contested in his beloved Kar-Kraft Mustang.
