History of car : Because of the big prize money offered in Australian Sports Sedan racing in the 1970's, race teams started to develop more and more radical machines. And Ian 'Pete' Geoghegan's 'Craven Mild' sponsored HJ Monaro GTS 350 was one of the most wild and innovative of the bunch.

Its 350 cu. in. Chevrolet small block V8 ran Lucas fuel injection and produced 550hp. Power was transferred to a Hewland LG600 transaxle, and the independent rear suspension used twin coil over shocks on each side, plus GT40 hub carriers and parallel upper & lower links. Ford GT40 wheels, complete with centre knock-offs, were also used. Holes cut throughout the bodywork reduced the Monaro's hefty weight, and other body modifications included cowl induction, vortex generating tips on the training edge of the roofline, and a specially placed NACA duct on the boot lid. All these features added up to a highly competitive race car, and the mighty Monaro became a crowd favourite. The car produced a fabulous sound track that combined the thundering open exhausts of the Chevy V8 with the high pitched whine of the Hewland transaxle.

Big Pete and the Monaro scored many wins together.
