When I was supplying photographs for the Auckland car Club Bulletin in the 70's I attended lots of these events and there was always plenty of action.

Yep it was the old Waikaraka car and it is Rod, remember we talked about and decided to see what it was like, and it was a handful.
#11 Rod also in buggy with F6 on screen, on the limit as not much more room to bank, he has come out of right hander and locked it all the way to there.

Found an old photo of my first serious race car, the ex Francevic/Mcmillan Ford, back up car at a club circuit meeting at Pukekohe around 1974/75 parked alongside my XT GT. We used to park the cars on the full track grass verge in front of the main grandstand and it was a great little track especially for the learners that later after they let it go to ruin had to run on the daunting big track. People in photo are L/R my bro Clive (about 11 there) my brother in law Brian and sister Lexine, buddies Brian Boyle(Alan Boyles Nephew) Brett Haldane, Gavin Stroud, First wife Vivienne ("cringe") and the blond long haired yetty in the race suit is myself

Those are great shots Ross, love the profile shots of the boy's sitting in the 'office'. Howdy still got his beard but different colour now and Cookie still looks the same ( well kind of), bump into them occasionally.

That 'cat' Blair Robson sitting in casual style of his back then.

Great stuff. Loved the earlier set with a great range of cars. Sunbeam Alpine, MGBs, Triumph Vitesses and the later pic of the Dolomite Sprint with wheel arch extensions, various clockwork frogs etc.

Wonderful photo's of Cossey's Farm. Once a superb event venue ( with a jump even ! ) , now a sealed road lined with houses.
I will take some photo's from these points of view over the xmas break and post for members who enjoyed the track in the day.

Hi Ross , It would seem that facial hair and natty hats / outfits were the order of the day in the 70's :-)

In order to show a few people I have just roughly copied this short snippet of ( silent ) 16mm film of a night time service break for the Fiat and Masport Teams in the 1977 Radio NZ Rally.
Note the denim caps and other fashionable items worn ( love those Masport jackets though )
That's Jim Donald with the extra large sideburns working on getting the front wheels to point straight again.
Ari sure did a number on that poor car ! It's a tribute to the crew to have kept him in the event.
This looks like it's in a service station forecourt and it's probably the night before the Mystery Creek stage.
Although this is low - res footage at the moment I will have it professionally transfered in the new year

Had a request to publish a photo of the Humber 80 Special,car is now in Brisbane Australia and being called a Buckler !!!Other photos that i found while looking for the above,top photo Graeme Brayshaw ,Cooper Norton Cossey,s ,Graeme still has and races this car.Middle photo the late Peter Bruin,Cooper Vincent 1000cc,looks like Bombay.Bottom RH in Minimax ,Bombay,on this day beat Boyds record in the Lycoming,them Jim went and knocked another 10th of a second to reclaim it,he always liked to go up last....just in case !!!23459

Grant Sprague has asked me to post a couple of photos on this thread and the Pre 65 one. Here is a shot of him driving a 3.3 Victor on the Cragiemore hillclimb. The only mod was the put a set of 'Town and Country' tyres on the car and go hillclimbing. I understand that he was only about 18 at the time but I am sure he will add some notes.

I think that he set FTD or a class record on the day.

There was a class for over 3.0 litre & yes was a win , for that class at that time ..not to say I was any where near the quickest up the hill as various classes quicker than me , this car was just a beaut had a hankering for it as Ernie & Leo ran them a year or two prior at B & H .... it used to smoke the tyres big time lol ,,,, yep Ernie found some 2nd hand town & countries & said go for it ...... first run I ran off the road big time but got it right 2nd run ......... Steve has some piks of the XU1 & Anglias going up same hill

These things had serious grunt back then Grant, looks like this must be run 2 or 3 as looks good, no weeds hanging off it.
Bet Ernie sat back and chuckled when you boy's were playing, he was a wag with some comments at Baypark when we stood with him.

Ha ha Rod....... yea .. this was a very long right hander as you might see...it leads on to a long straight I went off at the end of that but no damage Ernie & Pumpkin were right there......Ernie never really said much was only a grin normally but one occasion he cuddled me at Taupo after a win & even Roly did the same at Manfeild lol, That was very special for me two greats expressing feelings like that.... That victor we bought off a car yard in Oamaru .....Dad paid for it & I paid him off in 6 months working at the freezing works & carting hey in the weekends , that funded the XU1 as well , great days Rod ... Then I meet you lol

Did quite a few hillclimbs and grass track sprints over the years 1971 to about 1980, in a Mini, an Austin- Healey Sprite, Triumph GT6 and finally a Triumph TR4A, - ex Russ Abbott, who features in the Dolomite back in the thread.. Ross took quite a few photos of my TR4A competing, have a few results sheets too!! after all these years. must get them out and attache them..

Ross, thanks, have several of your photos of the TR4 but not that one, running 60 spoke wires on the front - original and 72 spoke [ TR6 ] on the back, had two sets of wheels in the day 5 x 60's and 4 x 72's looks like a very narrow road, Where was it ??, have forgotten.

Does anyone remember this Mini,Lotus-Cortina Motor grafted onto BMC Mini Transmission, I belive by Ted Thompson an engineer in Kumeu, this is at A Club Circuit meeting at Pukekohe around 1968-69, was a quickfire race meeting that was televised.

Rodger- I was also at this meeting in my Coopers S, I was working for Paine Motors, Mangere Branch at the time.

From memory so was Bryce Platt in a Torana XU1, thet spent most fo the time sideways, amazing what you could do in a public carpark, back in the day. this was an NSCC event. We must have met I am sure

another Gymkhana Sprint - grass track near Waiuku. organised by Austin-Healey Car Club mid 1970's, photo by Ross Cammick. the car was originally a four wheel BSA saloon from around 1930, has the front and rear suspension /chassis parts cut off and a twin tube central section welded in, running a Ford 10 motor, back to front, with three brakes front wheels and hand brake. Owned at the time and for many years after by Lyle Chambers - Waitemata Vintage Car Club and AHCCNZ member

Was this the one that Kevin Masterton ran, could be in my car mags, will check.

Also people do track days instead of this.
Too much emphasis now on power instead of control.
Health and Safety plus onerous Council restrictions have stopped these public events.
I remember that they were difficult but fun., if you couldnt do the exercise properly then just light up the tyres.

I wonder if anyone from Motorsport NZ will look at these and see how healthy club sport events USED to be, before the powers took over and stuffed it.
Our local club still run grass gymkanas & not too long ago ran these events in freezing works car park during off season, by contrast they no longer run standing quarter mile/ mile/ flying mile sprints on closed public roads, some gravel sprints & hillclimbs usually on roads used by local rallys., but entry to these usually requires rally car mods and virtually removes the average road car from events ( part of this appears to be a case of using a permit that only allows rally/competition cars ). Bit like you can race your average road car sans cage in a club members circuit race, but not in a sanctioned series event. We/I must be ever so lucky to still be topside!

Ross BMC BOY, is that a young Chris White with the clipboard, ?? well remember Crombie John [ as we often called him, as how you completed your entry form ] that Mini " GM 799 ", was bought new from Seabrook Fowlds on the Friday and the first weekend John did the NSCC Castrol 1000 Trial, so the car was back at Seabrook's on the Monday for its first service. the said Johnh Crombie taught me a lot about Car Trialling, and we both attended annual conference for MANZ as it was, after being ANZCC, Association of New Zealand Car Clubs, that must have been around 1974 too !!.

Chris White is in the Healey Club from Wanganui. Chris still campaigns his Jensen Healey and is still a quick peddler.
That Mini of Crombie's was evidently rarely washed from the day it was purchased - he drove in into the ground. He was a very clever guy and qualified as a Patent Attourney, but he preferred to build fibreglass kayaks and various other fibreglass car body parts. A real demon at Trialling and knew every trick in the book! After competing in so many trials he could usually look at the instructions on the start line, tell where the event was heading and predict where most of the traps were. Very interesting and eccentric guy. I'm sure there are a lot of stories about John around.

Back in the olden days when the Wellington Car Club held gymkhanas they did not put cars into classes so a small car was the thing to have. Lots of young guys would come along with hot Minis etc, charge around like gangbusters, engines screaming, tyres screaching, hard acceleration then stand on the brakes, the full drama.
Then there was this family man who had a habit of turning up in his humble Triumph Herald station wagon. He'd unload mum and the kids and the picnic basket, drive around at a Nana pace and invariably take 1st place. Didn't seem right, somehow.

In 1971 I entered a gymkhana (in an Escort) in the carpark at the Johnsonville mall. A young bloke I'd never seen before was there in an automatic AP6 Valiant, lowered with widened chrome wheels, who caused a real uproar.
One of the excercises (for want of a better word) was an "open and shut the gate". This meant driving up to a traffic cone, stop, get out and shift the cone to one side, move the car forward, get out again and shift the cone back, then into the car again and proceed to the finish line. Quickest time wins.
Valiant man stopped a bit short of the cone , exited the car while it was still in "drive", ran ahead and grabbed the cone, stood aside as his car drove itself past, replaced the cone, ran after the car and jumped in.
Just about every one leapt up and down and howled in protest (but not me of course lol) The officials scratched their heads, tried to think of a rule that had been broken but couldn't and had to allow it. Maybe it was a common ploy at other clubs gymkhanas but it was the only time I ever saw it done at one of ours.
The same bloke entered the same car in the 1972 Heatway Rally. It did seem a bit ambitous - driving flat out over 2000km on mainly gravel roads in a lowered Valiant. One of my mates confidently predicted that even if by some miracle he managed to finish it would in distant last place. In fact, he did finish and well clear of last. I thought he did well.

Totally agree, this car was my daily driver and weekend racer for several years 1978-1980, Sprints, Gymkhana Hillclimbs Trials and a bit of grass track combined Gymkhana Sprints..

Jac Mac, Yes Left hand as was bought new in Switzerland had Rostyle Chrome Wheels, and a fitting to put the spare wheel on top of the boot, beautiful tan leather interior and a Blaupunkt stereo with front and rear speakers, quite flash for the time 1970, NZ 3500's had steel wheels and chrome trims. Car was sold and replaced by a Walkinshaw modified Vanden Plas Vitesse SD1, in the late 1980's that had a most unusual fuel injection system, belive both cars are now in Christchurch, if still in one piece

The Fibreglass Kayaks, Yes remember that called himself " Kayak Moulders " [ from memory ], we had several Austin-Healey CC members with Bugeye Sprites [ me included ] that needed new Front bonnets, [ the whole of the front of the car, as you know ] and approached John to make them, had a fairly good one lent to use as a mould, John gave us a price but needed to make 5 or 6 to make it worthwhile, at around $3-500 each, couldn't get enough takers to make it viable and the car was only worth about $1000, so the project did not proceed.

Motorsport Day 1978 by Northern Sports car Club, was a combined events day that was a lot of fun as had a Gymkhana at the Clubrooms in Otahuhu, then a trial [ part one ] to Pukekohe Raceway, Club Circuit Sprints, then Trial [ part two to Cosseys Farm, for a hillclimb, the event was designed around two person crews, and in my memory a very good days motorsport.

Northern Sports Car Club had a trophy for best Sports Car competitor over the year, it included all events that they ran [ apart from National Race meetings, so Hillclimbs, Sprints, Club Circuit sprints and races, Gymkhana's and Trials, in 1975 these two were the contenders for the trophy, and ended up in a Tie, so both Drivers names went on the trophy, Rob Williams did most of the Speed events, and myself some Speed and all the trials.
I had met Rob while still at school through a school friend, and when I got my first car in 1967, a 1960 Austin Seven [ mini ], took it to Rob to get the demon exhaust modification, get one Massey Ferguson tractor muffler, available tax-free as agricultural equipment and way cheaper than a Cooper Muffler, Rob would knock the front and rear baffles out with a metal bar and weld the Muffler on, coning straight out the back, added lots of noise but no increase in the puny 34 bhp that the car had.

Also people do track days instead of this.
Too much emphasis now on power instead of control.
Health and Safety plus onerous Council restrictions have stopped these public events.
I remember that they were difficult but fun., if you couldnt do the exercise properly then just light up the tyres.

John, need to reply, yep, If I got it wrong, you lost the good time so, Do you just drive to the end of the test or give it heaps, especially in a grass paddock, the more spins the better, was known as Roundabout Roger at one stage and actually finished in reverse in a " garage at the end of one sprint, hit the brakes on a hump and the Sprite did a 180 so finished back in first, still had a good time..

Gees Ross, I should have known you would have a photo of the old girl from that Bright Rd event. Thats really cool. I came second that day only by a few tenths of a second to a full house BDA rally car Driven I think by Blair Robson. But I was pretty pleased as the old girl wasnt really suited to rally stuff. I remember Trevor Mclean had come down with me and I let him take the car down for a run up the hill but the officials wouldnt let him have a go!! Thanks for the great memories that photo stirred up Ross. Cheers, George.

Did the whole series, 10 events from memory, those were the days.
Take the car to my mate Rod after driving it home from work on Friday night, quick tune-up, and check, then off first thing Saturday, often with another mate John Rye as passenger - especially on the distant ones, distant from Mount Albert, Waikato, Franklin County etc, run all day, off to the nearest pub usually where the results were published, drive home, Sunday, tidy the car up for next weeks commute, then a week or fortnight later same routine. Never in the fast class, but a lot of fun and you tended to have guys doing similar times they were your challengers.

The car was rebuilt / restored during 1983 - 84, when it had another minor accident, again, the fault was not with this driver, then repaired again and sold to be raced by an American Charles Matschek, in Wings and Wheel at Whenuapai, Pukekohe Classic races and others.

Bringing this to the fore, John Woolf, was of course Allan and Colleen Woolf son, their daughter married Paul Adams, and used to navigate in Rallies and Trials, the Woolf's were my neighbours in the late 50's early 60's in Seabrook Avenue, New Lynn, Allan had modified Ford 8, immediate pre-war - pre the Prefect era, which I thought as 10-12 year old was amazing, when we had a 1951 Prefect and another neighbour had a Ford Popular, the one that Ford kept selling as their budget car still with a sidevalve, even when the 105E Anglia came out.

Trevor, I knew you would know something and yes, they did look like a miniature '34 V8 ", If see you Allan again soon, remember me to him, the young fellow from up the road, and also the guy in the 70's who tried to get ANZ Bank to help sponsor his 3 litre Capri in the Heatway Rally .. the year he slipped off the road and down a bank and TV was right there. imagine to advertising for that.
He ran Woolf Mufflers on the other side of Newton Gully, and I worked at ANZ Newton [ K'Road ] at the time 68-73, and again in 78-79.

Woolfy, Paul Adams and Sue, and of course Allan were all at the Northland Car Club 60th a few weeks back. Allan drove the Cooper Imp, Paul a 2002. All seem in fine form, as always. Great to see them yet again. Shame the event (hillclimb) was not like the good old days IMHO.

Hi Guys, I am hoping to write an article on these series of Hill Climbs, I competed in the 1979-80 series in my TR4A,the series ran for several years staring I believe in 1977 and may been replaced by the Duckhams series in the 1980's. .
Would be interested in information on any of the series and events.

Milan, thank you for that. I note the spelling of Bardahl - Bardhal, not sure of the correct one and it seems is common mistake I have two 1;43 models with each version of the spelling .. must Google it.
I note that I was slow, the slowest in the 1601 - 2500 cc class and well towards the tail end of the whole field. was great fun though..

Hi Guys, I am hoping to write an article on these series of Hill Climbs, I competed in the 1979-80 series in my TR4A,the series ran for several years staring I believe in 1977 and may been replaced by the Duckhams series in the 1980's. .
Would be interested in information on any of the series and events.

the 1979 - 80 series was 8 events,run by the 8 clubs as detailed; Thanks to Milan Fistonic for information that put the events in order;

#1, Hamilton Car Club 26 October 1979 - Pekanui Road, Puketotara, near Pirongia, Waikato
#2, Northern Sports Car Club 4 November 1979 Cosseys Farm Drury, [ Off Appleby Road back in the day a farm track , it is now a public Road.]
#3, Auckland Car Club 18 November 1979 McLachlans Road [ MacLaughlins ? ] Kaukapakapa
#4, Triumph Car Club 25 November 1979 West Road, Clevedon
#5, Pukekohe Car Club 9 December 1979 Bright Road,Waiuku
#6, MG Car Club 16 December 1979 Bald Hill Road,Waiuku
#7, Auckland University Car Club 26 January 1980 Stoney Creek Road, Kaukapakapa -[there is some mention of using Andersons Farm,which I thought sounded correct but that was near Paremoremo, Albany ?? any help here ?

I have the results from rounds 2 NSCC, 3 ACC, 6 MGCC and 8 HCMC, have also a list of times from John Climo, from various of the events.
Milan Fistonich has posted the final results as they appeared in the Auckland Car Club Bulletin.

I paid for the Gemco moulds, and a few days later went to collect them. Gone. Are they technically mine still? (Not a serious question, but I was devastated at the time, especially when I had taken the airbox moulds and couldn't get that back from the borrower in Warkworth)

You take wonderful B&W photos. Thanks for sharing as they never get too old to look at.

I don't think I was particularly brave at that location Ken as there was a strong wooden fence that circled the horse racing track between me and the cars. I was probably using my 300mm lens which is a moderate size. Down at the other end of the club circuit was more dangerous as there was nothing between you and the cars, but you just had to be sensible and aware. Not allowable in this day and age, hence only fairly ordinary shots are all that can be achieved unless you can afford massive lenses.

As an aside, I have literally hundreds of photos of club circuit meetings from 1974 to 1982 if anyone is searching for any old shots from their youth. I am happy to have a look through them for you - it helps to know the rego numbers to make searching quicker. My email address is cammick339@gmail.com

This car was originally imported into NZ by Ian Richardson and it was metallic blue. Bill Clouston purchased the car off Ian and painted it BRG as seen in the above photo. I think Jim Reece bought the aftermarket hardtop off Bill (or Ian). Usually you have to remove the soft top to get a Works type Mk 2 or 3 hardtop on (rare beast), but the aftermarket one went completely over the convertible top in situ. Not so attractive, but far more practical as removal of a convertible model soft top is a lengthy and fiddly job.
