Hi, Russ. Rod Grimwood IS my name and I am so happy I did not have to come out of the closet. Mind you these days we may be a minority in the eyes of some of the "wimps" who call themselves parliamentarians, as we don't hold hands with our mates.

Had couple of nicknames in past "Drifty' , "Rose" "Grimme" and also been called other names by some.

Never been a 'wimp' but have definitely seen/meet a few.

Cheers Russ, don't forget that 'cyber bullying' is now an offence.

Steve Holmes
11-06-2013, 08:53 PM
OK, as Lindsay has said above, this is normal in todays social media. All forums have people using nom de plumes. In the case of this site, their chosen names often relate to their cars, wish list cars, racing heroes etc. There is nothing sinister involved and I don't have an issue with it. In fact, compared to many other forums, I'm surprised by how many people on here actually use their real names! And think about it. If we all used our real names, eventually we'd have the situation where someone couldn't join, because they share the same name as an existing member. For example, if the famous porn star Steve Holmes decided he wanted to join, he couldn't, as there is already a Steve Holmes on this site.

Me too...

"A rose by any other name..."

Sometimes it can be useful to use a nom de plume so that the great unwashed or even your employers, can't pin anything on you. Unfortunately, some posters cannot resist naming whistleblowers (which is a shame), so I am happy enough if people want to use one. Without some of them (particularly on another board), many of us would be in the dark about some goings on.

On this board, I wanted a platform for our race series, even though 80% of my posts may now be personal.

PS: Wasn't it John Holmes (not TACCOC!) rather than Steve Holmes that was alluded to earlier?

Hello Dave,

My thanks to all those who have responded. Because of certain laws in this country I am unable to divulge the closet dweller in question. Let's just say he's already responded and it wasn't any of you who let us know your true identities. Certainly not "old fart".

Hell, mentioned twice but there are a few who know. When I signed up there were very few real names.
Russ did you really mean to diseases or die arses?
Rhys Nolan ( and to be on here you need to be a BOF sometimes.) Old time user of a Skoda, made a profit from the sport after 52 events over two years, flaggie way back, now deep into vintage racing, and done 10 Targa events as co-driver.

I have spent many years, and thousands of dollars setting up my closet, and I refuse to come out of it just to please a learned collegue. However, I confess, I have made an exception this weekend to assist the Sandown flag marshalls....

At this stage it's only a rumour, Rhys but I have heard that your proposed class is looking so popular that a well known motor racing villain is looking at the possibility of running a Tatra. Myself, I'm looking for a Standrive as I don't like the idea of having to change gears. It's too bloody difficult when holding a glass of red.

Bruce 302 is kind of shorthand for our real family name, Triotou. (its polynesian) But when I was growing up, all the palagi kids would tease me and throw abacados, so we anglicised it to the very common Thompson, and now it is hard to register that anywhere because it is so common.

I am, Bruce Thompson, international gentleman of leisure, except I have to work, lots.

At least this forum seems to have avoided what some others allow - ie, noms de plume of real people (Jim Clark, Keke Rosberg etc)

Many Italians used non de plums to go racing
some to avoid family riot of them racing against parents wishes ( as jackie stewart did with A N Other at his first few races)
some presume to deter kidnapping (rife in the 60s/70s) no one knew who they were
we had an Austrian racer Fritz Glatz race for years as Pierre Chavuet and Fredrico Carecca
both surnames meant "bald" as he was but he was another banned by mummy from going motor racing

I however am not worth much so no one will kidnap me possibly pay someone to take me away for a few more hours
and my mummy has banned me from coming round to visit

The non de plumed racing driver - there should be some great tales.

Baroness Hélène van Zuylen van Nijevelt van de Haar entered the 1898 Paris–Amsterdam–Paris Trail using the pseudonym Snail and became the first woman to compete in an international motor race.

Another reason was surely ease of use - for team management, announcers, programme typesetters etc. For example:

B Bira = Prince Birabongse Bhanudej Bhanuband
JJ Lehto = Jyrki Järvilehto (Imagine Murray Walker getting his tongue around that name)
Johnny Dumfries = John Colum Crichton-Stewart (7th Marquess of Bute)
Alfonzo de Portago = Don Alfonso Cabeza de Vacade y Leighton

Did Umberto Ledfotti really race at Bathurst 12-hour? Surely taking the piss

Of course had Norman Barry racing as Frank Bryan in the Mustang around '67. Were there any others on the local scene? Some may have preferred to be anonymous in hindsight

Crichton-Stuart, please! In his racing days he was Earl of Dumfries. He didn't inherit the Marquis of Bute title until the 1990s

Alfonzo de Portago = Don Alfonso Cabeza de Vacade y Leighton
