I have dug out a lot of Dad's old photos and have started the long slow process of scanning them. Some have details on the back about driver / car / event, but a lot don't so if anyone can identify cars / people / events etc I'll add them to the back of each photos. We do know they're not taken at the NZGP because Dad has never gone to a GP. Looks like a National meeting as you can see the TVNZ outside broadcast trucks in the background on the infield. Anyway, here are the first lot.

I'm positive Inky Tulloch never used an auto gearbox in the Capri Chev, fairly sure it was a Muncie or Super T10 4 speed. Trevor Crowe's Starlet V8 in the Zap flavoured milk guise did not have a turbo either, it was a 4.3 litre Olds V8 with intially a Holley 4bbl carb, then Hilborn fuel injection. The turbocharged engine was only used very early on in the cars history, it was a 3.9 litre engine (to stay under the 6 litre limit with the turbo equivalency factor), but was discarded in favour of sub 4500cc engines when weight limits tied to engine capacity were introduced - as a under 4500 cc car the Starlet only had to weigh 1700 lbs (773 kg), with the turbo as under 6000cc car, the weight limit was 2300 lb (1045 kg). As the Starlet weighed very close to 1700 lbs, the naturally aspirated engine was the choice.

Tulloch Capri had a mag case Muncie gearbox when initially raced, that was severely damaged when the clutch/bell housing failed at an Ruapuna OSCA round ~79/80 IIRC, dont remember if the case was repaired or the whole trans replaced after that incident. Never had an auto that I recall.
Always thought that the way the engine/trans was mounted @ front of block & tail housing with nothing around the bell housing area was crazy, after the failure I think they added some support straps in the firewall area. Sure got Inkys attention when all the shrapnel started attacking the trans tunnel area:). Coasted to a halt with his knees hugging his chin.

Does anyone know what year the photos above might have been taken?

Thank you everyone for all the information ( and corrections ) you have provided so far. It all helps to get the history correct.

Right on to the next lot. These are all dated May 1974, looks like a club meeting on the short circuit. I've got absolutely no clue who anyone is. Apart from a guess - is that Jim Richards in the Team McMillan Falcon? and behind him on the far side, Trevor McLean in the Valiant ute? Is this the one that had the auto or was it a Charger, as Trevor was Mr Papakura Automatics wasn't he? Side note - in pics to come later ( a lot newer pics ) is Trevor's ( older? ) brother as crew chief for Roger Williams McRae GM1 F5000.

Andrew- that is Trevor MacLeans ute, and id did have an auto. His wife, Mavis worked with me at Davie Motors. This would be late 70s . Papakura Automatics was his business. Know that he was one of the first to fit a 6 speed sequential into his Commodore later. Would his ute still be running on the road now? Would it qualify as a historic racer?

I will be able to confirm the date when Bryce drove Reg's Sunny because I had just been new to the sport and I had walloped him in all races...the last two were side by side handicap races where we started from pit lane....where my Green car just looked like a road car with no turbo or sign writing. Reg was rather quiet sitting in the stands directly in front of my late wife Lorraine who was over the top excited with her mother at me getting another victory on a track that would become my spiritual home. In another shot just below the one with Trev's ute I see starting last in a handicap race was the Ross Tebbs owned and Colin Reed driven Shellsport Anglia. I used to assist in engine builds on this little rocket that was later sold to Harold Wootten Senior whom raced it at Club circuit well into his 80's. ....and just another snippet re/ Trevor McLean....do you relise that the Commodore that was racing at Hampton Downs Ferrari festival is ex Trevor McLean/Rodney Downs Bathurst car......Kind Regards, Tony Rutherford.

This Falcon, off the number plate, is / was registered as a 1979 Ford Fairmont, cream, 4900cc, with a last known milage of 133,439 on the 4th of April 1998. So one would imagine it no longer exists, or is a permanent racer and hence not registered anymore.

These next ones have "Benson and Hedges Pit Lane 1984 Approx" written on the back. Are they actually 1984? Drivers names?

East City News across the top of the windscreen - is this driven by Dave Slater?

This Falcon, off the number plate, is / was registered as a 1979 Ford Fairmont, cream, 4900cc, with a last known milage of 133,439 on the 4th of April 1998. So one would imagine it no longer exists, or is a permanent racer and hence not registered anymore.

Another Pukekohe meeting, this time on the old Club Circuit. The "pits" were on the front straight on the main track, in front of the Members' Stand. Around 1987 / 1988, as I remember being in awe of the red #7 XF Falcon, as they were brand new, and I wondered how someone could afford to turn a brand new car into a race car. For some reason I remember it as coming over from Australia?

Post #41 looks like Marsden Robinson (Elva) and it may well have been his Morgan and trailer in the post immediately above?

I think the Elva suffered some damage on the back straight at a very wet meeting and was then run by Rob Williams until very recently. Roger H will know the full details.

Great stuff - especially having the dates! Hopefully, there will be one or two from meetings I'm still struggling with.

The ex-Marsden Robinson Elva 100 had a bad accident at Puke a few years back when owned and driven by Rob Williams. It aquaplaned on the back straight and the resultant crash broke the car in two. Luckily Rob was not too badly hurt. The car was repaired and continued to race successfully for many years. Rob then sold it about two or three years ago to Vince Anderson who made his racing comeback in it at HD but rolled it in his first race and ended up in hospital and immediately re-retired from racing. Ron Williams bought it back and repaired it to immaculate condition and has done a few races in it but now has it for sale.

2 photos of the ex Sefton Gibb Cobra replica ( built by Graham Berry Race Cars ). These are at a Capri or Escort Car Club day at Pukekohe, during Keith Lane's ownership. At one of these club days I was spectating at, Keith had an unfortunate accident at the end of the front straight and hit the horse racing fence on the inside of the track just after the pit exit. It was wet and I think he hit a deep puddle and aquaplaned. Keith was out of action for a while, but recovered faily well I think, but I've never seen the car again.

Ken , yes that's the 73 McLaren that Tony and I ran, it was the Rutherford short track car early in the season and then Revsons primary car after Indy, won the two other 500 milers. The engine came from the
Kerion Wills RX8 I carefully grafted it in so as not to destroy any of the factory parts. Took it to Wigram one year ran in excess 200mph on the back straight. Tony loved that car stable and fast, would clip off 55's at Puke no sweat. Now with Aaron Lewis has an Offy back in it nearly complete for Indy 2017.

We bought it from a guy Ron Rickard in SanDiego it had a 302 chevy in it then, bad installation looked like it had been done with a knife and fork. So why not? we had formula Libre and the engine was available..........The combo was fantastic solid, heavy, stable car and fast. Photo 169 and 176 are very familiar and memory envoking, The Corvette is how Tony Roberts and myself got to know each other. Tony arrived down my driveway in Bucklands Beach driving the ugliest custom corvette I had ever seen . He wanted to find out how to make it go fast and handle for under a 100 dollars. Mate, I said you don't have the money to do what I want to do to it, so we joined forces and have been scheming together ever since. The cars construction actually began with a bit of friendly banter with Alan Cattle , who helped me occasionally with my fibre glass 308 GTB Ferrari. I was in his shop one day and he and several other fine persons were working on fitting some huge brakes on Stu McCondachs 308. I stupidly asked how much they were worth and to my horror was advised that they were close on $40K. To which I replied I could build a Corvette for that , that would blow its doors off. Alan years later confided in me that he agreed with me but couldn't at the time. And so the Corvette became a reality. Built on a shoestring Tony even sold his birthday present barbeque to buy the Holley carb we needed. The car was a winner from the word go. The first American sportscar to break into the TACCOC scene. We beat the Porkers up on a regular basis. Every race was filmed from almost the same spot in the stands that the photo was taken. We studied the tapes to find our strengths and weaknesses and worked only on minor mods. 10K per year budget resulted in 2 T&C Championships 42 wins from 56 or so starts only a couple of dnf's. Owen and Bill threw a fortune at their Lighting Direct program and still we kept in front. Only when racing Ray put the big turbos on did we realise the end was near The Corvette started out doing 1.14's and we developed it to down to 1.05 dead just with gear ratio changes aero and other minor work. Didn't touch the engine for 3 seasons.
Of course Tonys a bloody good driver as well ...that helped. My wife called it the FRC.

ERC
02-24-2017, 09:29 PM
To continue the above, once the Hotline Sports/GT Series folded, as Tony had no other class in which he could compete with the Corvette, we allowed him to run in the ERC Series, even though it was supposedly for European cars only.

This was because:

a) The rules when first written, back in 1996/97, gave the committee the right to allow a car into the series where they thought that there was no other reasonable series for that car. The same applied to Datsun Z's. (Since then, there have been classes more appropriate.) The ERC Series has always adopted an inclusive policy rather than an exclusive one, as having classic cars, even if not 100% pure, banished to sheds, seems a somewhat short sighted policy, especially when the sport needs decent sized grids to survive.

b) I had known Tony since he was in ladies underwear, in 1983, briefly...:o:o:o

Robert Brown in the Blue Mustang I think - he used to run The Carburettor Centre in Otahuhu from memory. Car was 289 I think, so didn't have the outright pace of the bigger capacity cars, but he used to drive to the track, take out the spare wheel and tool box, do a days' racing, load back up and drive home. The second car is possibly a Chevron, maybe Evan Fray's son??

Andrew, thank you for the comments about the Kenny book.

Sadly the trailer came sans a Lotus 23 - real or otherwise.

On that subject, there is a replica 23 on Trade Me at the moment, a Christchurch based car that I perved over at Skope a few weeks ago.

I'm confident in saying that's HRC's Chris Watson in the second TR (which, I think, ultimately suffered a roll at Whenuapai).

This is the exact same camera that Dad used to take all the photos, a Braun Paxette Electromatic. It even had the same brown leather and plastic case, and he had the hand book too. My Dad's Dad bought the camera new, and then my Dad inherited it from his Dad. Unfortunately my parents gave it away when they got a newer camera, as no one wanted to buy it.

This photo is from an eBay ad in the UK - 20Pounds will buy it.

I think this one is from the early to mid '80's, at a meeting run on the club circuit. Did this car / driver used to come from Whangarei to race?

The Corvette belonged to Ian Knight from Whangarei. Must be a mid 80s photo before Ian modified the car.

Andrew- it was very interesting to get these details.
I was asked if a certain Escort in SI had enough history to make it into the ranks.
Ended up talking to the current Torana owner who gave me the history of the Escort- a club car.
He recognised my name from here and told me about this Torana...Wellington Street race history etc, and of course he got it off Glenn.

Ian is a member on TRS Andrew but he owned the Corvette for many years and was for sale last year from memory.
He had moved to Aussie and took the Corvette with him.

Ian was/is a neat guy, been along time since I chatted with him always neat to meet up with at meetings back ole days. As Spgeti says he travelled from Whangarei to race and did most club meetings and some national. He had the Corvette for ages and it went pretty good. it was alway a tidy car. Ian had a fling with a V8 Escort for awhile as well i think, it was red.

Half the fun of all these old cars is tracking down people and finding out the history, of both the car and the driver :)

I went to WBHS and Ian and his brother Eric went there as well. Ian purchased good friend Barry Bigalow's 28 Flattie powered Roadster and then my to be ex bother in law Kenny West's Corvette powered Mk2 Zephyr.
He did a bit of drag racing in the Zephyr and a Husky van.
Yes he raced the V8 Escort Rod but I had moved away by then.

His dad raced a Standard 10 in the 50/60s from memory.
