Thought it was about time to get a thread running, initially for potential entries, supporters etc.

These are the ERC potential entries so far for weekend two only - just one grid but the current intention is practice and 1 scratch race Friday, two handicaps Saturday and Sunday, the second on each day to be series points scoring rounds.

Grids jointly sponsored by Arrow Wheels and Auckland Engineering Supplies, our usual series sponsors, for which we are very grateful. This only gives them the naming rights of course, but like Dale (HMC), we'll probably be looking to get posters done.

1 Alan Ferguson - BMW M8
3 John Dennehy – Aston Martin Vantage
19 Kerry Chadderton – Porsche
20 Geoff Sparkes - Triumph
21 Bryce Platt – Porsche
22 Peter Robinson - BMW
28 Bruce Manon - Escort (Mike Sexton's car)
29 Mike Lucas – Datsun 240Z
34 Graeme Park - Porsche
42 Des Redgwell - Volvo 242
44 Derek Moore - Jaguar XJS
47 Gary Baildon – BMW
48 Ricky Cooper – Datsun Z
49 Chris Browne – Alfa
67 Paul Kendrick - Porsche
69 Dennis McConnell – Escort
70 Ray Green – Marcos
71 Adam Jones - Escort
75 Craig Howser - Escort
83 John Honore - Ferrari
87 David Brace – BMW
93 Ivan Selak - Escort
115 Chris Barendregt - Porsche

866 Frans Cronje - Renault
910 Simon Mills - Alfa
944 Paul Madeley - Porsche

76 Craig Sawyer – Vauxhall – provisional entrant

Any remaining expressions of interest may be held for a week or two to give those overseas or away, time to get in touch and to try and maintain variety.

72 Karl Sentch - Datsun Z - pending 01
242 Roman Schiff - Datsun Z - pending 02
6 or ? Mal Clark - Rover or BMW - possible

Do you have a decent contact for posters Dale - or does anyone else for that matter?

I was thinking of a gridded design with a pic of every car and a white space underneath each pic for autographs. A poster for each driver as a memento as well as the public.

We may be too old now for F1 glory but it helps the ego to autograph anything when you are a nobody, a never-has-been or never-will-be!

I'd also like an embroidered badge (like the TACCOC Whenuapai meetings) to be done.

In the past Steve(Holmes) has computer draw up our legend posters and i've had "True Colours" next to me at work print them out, i usually buy the paper to get better quality and to cheapen the cost in the A3 size, really you can design it however you want Ray as its just effort but it is a cool idea for both Racer and Public, we maybe too old for F1 glory but we can still live the dream(sort off) i guess we're all "could have","would have", "should haves" has beens LOL. The embroidered badge is a great idea and have thought of that also but not quite got around to it(theirs that "Round to it" word again that i keep hearing about, LOL) i believe at an event like this its kinda nice to lift the profile of each class which in turn helps the event organizers so please go for it Ray.

As of yesterday we have been successful in obtaining an HMC class sponsor for the festival and this helps offset material and other cost such as posters, trophies, etc. In-fact this wasn't to hard to get, just gotta ask i guess.

I'd offer my help Ray but i know you're more than capable in organizing this!!PS: don't forget the chocolate fish, LOL

I do have contacts with embroidery Dale, if you need it. We might have find an alternative to chocolate fish... Congratulations on landing a sponsor Dale. I'm sure they'll be thrilled with the value of the exposure. We are so fortunate in having had just 4 great sponsors across the two series over the last 19 years.

Expressions of interest still coming in from our guys (so I'll update post #1) but I want them to enter early and not cause Jim and Chris the grief they have had in previous years from tardy entrants.

Great, really great, that the HRC guys chose to honour Howden in this way. I had a chat to him the year of the first (Bruce McLaren) Festival of Motor Racing at Pukekohe in the BM Trust marquee and he was just the most obliging, friendly, and lucid interviewee you could hope for. His story really needs telling and sadly EY is no longer able to fill us in with the 70s insights. I'm sure there are many here who would like to know more about "the fourth Kiwi" of the 60s/70s motorsport world motorsport scene.

It's also an indication of his affection for his kiwi motorsport roots that he seems to come back every summer to celebrate a wonderful bygone era that he was a very significant part of.

This interview extract gives a quick overview of Howden's racing career from very humble beginning.

Having scanned our entries (or potential entries) it became apparent that we had a great basis for an "International Trophy" teams race.

My thinking at the moment is that this would be handicap race 1 on the Sunday - notwithstanding any attrition of course.

Handicapping would be as normal and points awarded to the top 5 finishers in each team. A fun trophy, not a serious one, to maintain the spirit of the event of course.

This is the provisional look at the moment - and no doubt it will change...

Time for a bump up the list I think.

Just a reminder that late entry fees click in after November 30th.

Our own group is looking pretty good so far and those blocked in green have already entered as at two days ago. The 'teams' concept for the Sunday morning handicaps seems to have gone down well with drivers, but the composition of the teams keeps changing a wee bit as people pull out and others come in. Maximum grid size is 46 cars.

We have over 40 drivers who have entered our grid for the Festival plus one or two who claim they have entered but don't (yet) appear on the list from HRC.

Several have also entered who are not on my list above, so the teams have to be reshuffled...

What is certain is that barring attrition between now and the second weekend of the Festival, that we should have a full grid of cars.
And I do mean a full grid, not 'all those who have entered a series'.

Well done guys and if nothing else, spectators will have something to look at on track other than bare tarseal - other than the last laps of the 4 handicap races of course, where the field condenses! Friday's scratch race will mean that we slower guys are lapped, but at least there will be plenty of overtaking towards the end of the races.

I'l publish a revised list of entries, just as soon as the queries have been resolved.

Andrew Metford
12-03-2014, 10:55 AM
Well done Ray, and congratulations on a full grid. People voting by entering confirms what we've known all along, the series is in great hands and people love the way it is run. Great stuff!!

I'll see you there to get my poster to frame for the man cave :)

Whoops! We have an OVER FULL grid... A combination of drivers entering late; not communicating their intentions beforehand and not ticking the correct box on the entry website.

Maximum grid size at HD is 46 cars. We have no less than 59 who have been logged on the HRC website. I should be able to whittle one or two down as they have cross entered with the Historic Saloons grid, so much as we'd like them in our grid, it may well be that we'll have to say "Choose!"

Other than that, those who entered late may be on the reserve list for a while, but knowing the normal attrition rate between now and the end of practice (we can practice 20% above the grid limit), I am sure that all will be racing. One driver can't make the Friday, but we are happy to have his entry. A massive thank you to all the ERC guys for the support. A great bunch and hopefully, we'll educate a fair few spectators that modern V8s and Utes may get the publicity, but at classic level, you still see good racing.

Now I have to sit down and re-jig the teams...

First draft of our poster for the event. All pics are my own other than a couple (75 & 616) and the two spaces will be filled - if not by two new cars to the series, then by Jaguar logos in the bottom corners. Cars 36 & 31. Car 31 was at the track Sunday but as it hadn't yet turned a wheel in anger, it stayed on the trailer. Driver of car 36 apparently fell off a 1 horsepower device and broke a rib...

I need to get on the outside and take some pics from R to L.

So many drivers that we had to go to A1 - and even then, no signature space.

Hi Ray, just my opinion, but who are you aiming the poster too? If it is to the competitors, this is great. But if to the public, it's too busy. We have exactly this type of format 10 years ago for the NZRC, and it flopped. However; posters with one or two exciting pictures were taken faster than they could be put out. Just an opinion, it's good you are putting in the effort

In my opinion, it took way too long for Howden to be added to the MSNZ Wall of Fame, but the measure of the man was his acceptance of the award. Originally he was flying out from California to attend the Awards Evening, but then He couldn't be here personally as he was attending a BRDC meeting in England, but took the time to make a professional video acceptance speech that was a great watch and listen.

It is just a giveaway Crunch. It isn't advertising or promoting anything.

As an inveterate poster collector for many years, if I was a kid at the Festival I'd be making a determined effort to try and get as many drivers as possible to sign it!

As a piece of memorabilia for the drivers and series supporters, a great reminder that whereas Tier 1 can only come up with a handful of identical cars, in our neck of the woods, all is healthy. They may not be future F1 stars, but in the real world in which we (classic and historic supporters) live, these are the legends who keep motorsport alive. Maybe you'd like to take one to hang in Wellington's ivory towers as a reminder!

As JAFA has already indicated, an ideal poster for the Man Cave or garage wall and for me, in years to come, a visual personal reminder of a great bunch of very supportive and appreciative guys, at a Festival that honours one of NZ's finest drivers.

I'll be getting one framed.

No problem JAFA. I'll keep a couple for you. (Check out final design in the ERC thread.) I have upped the order from 500 to 600 but will keep some back for any series driver, past or present just as long as they let me know. May even see if I can get a couple framed anyway and raffle them for Child Cancer at the awards dinner.

I'm sure Howden Ganley would be happy to sign a couple for us - especially if I add his photograph to them. May even try and get him to autograph my original Marlboro BRM Howden Ganley sticker and the wall in our unit, to match the Chris Amon autograph!

It's about time Billy Apple got the Lola T212 done too! That restoration has been going on for a very long time. I remember going to pick that up in the UK from Bob Howling - and we towed it to Nottingham from Cheshire, behind an 1116cc Mini in about 1976!

I had the pleasure to meet Howden at the Laguna Seca Historic Meet in 2007. He signed this cover of Autosport (July 19. 1973) which shows him on the left in the Iso Marlboro as behind him is the mayhem from the Jody Scheckter crash on the first lap at the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. As you will note James Hunt's Hesketh airbox is awry and it came off as he came past us at Becketts corner. The race stoppage allowed his crew to make repairs and he drove a great race to finish 4th.
Second to fourth finished less than a second apart! Howden finished in 9th place.

Final figures for the ERC races - 46 cars (full grid) plus 13 reserves...

All 13 reserves are racing in another group so won't miss out, though one or two are understandably not 100% happy being on the ERC reserve list, as they only entered the other grid to boost numbers! History shows that as any meeting progresses, numbers do tend to shrink. How much, no-one really knows, but what we are aiming for is that by the close of racing on the Sunday (weekend 2 only), there will still be a decent sized grid.

JAFA, you might want to collect your ERC poster just before, then get Howden to sign both! (You might need a silver marker for that though.) It is a big poster, so you might also want to bring along a 600mm cardboard tube!

I have just picked up the posters. Thrilled to bits with how they have turned out. A pretty hefty weight they are too! 850mm tall x 600mm wide.

If anyone wants one posting, I am more than happy to save you one and post after the event at the cost of postage plus a 600mm card tube. Although we aren't racing until weekend 2, I will have some available for weekend 1.

Not sure where I'll be located, but all being well, I should have #70 Marcos there alongside the PIC display area, near Hamptons.

Weekend 2, we are located on the Hampton's side of the roadway, but I'm not sure we'll get 50+ cars in there plus the Sports GTs.

ERC numbers for the coming weekend have dropped due to mechanical maladies. Down now to a grid of 46 cars and just 8 reserves...

A limited number of the ERC posters will be on sale from the programme kiosk in the paddock at $5 - profits to the local Te Kauwhata Primary School.

Hope you keen photographers get some good pics this coming weekend - though the weather forecast is a little erratic at the moment...

Well that's still a very healthy grid. Your cars were sorely missed on weekend 1
I have to say that as a paying spectator, I was a bit disappointed with some of the grid sizes on Saturday.
Festival publicity was trumpeting that there were 50+ F5000 entries whereas the reality was 22 starters for Saturday afternoon.
When your expectations are high, you can't help but be disappointed when they're not met.
However, having said that, I'd like to praise all the competitors that did turn up and race.
Hope that next weekend goes well

Great pics, thanks very much Nigel. But please don't feel too short-changed by having "only" 22 F5000s turn out Saturday. We had an historic meeting in Perth a couple of years back, and had ONE show up, Bill Hemming's Elfin MR8, and the entire crowd were eternally grateful that Bill gave it a damn good kicking for a few laps, twice in the day. You guys really are very lucky...:)

Wow, what an experience that would be. But the helmet of one of the passengers is way above the roll hoop! How on earth did they get away with that?

A friend of mine had paid his $1200 for his ride in the Arrows F1 car during the weekend, but, when he fronted up, he was unfortunately turned away because his helmet was above the roll hoop. He was gutted!

As of today the website is still claiming 50+ cars. Initially I had pretty much decided not to go this year but my mind was changed by the thought of 50 thundering V8's tearing around the track. What a spectacle that would be. So I paid my money and went along with high expectations. The other thing that was a bit disappointing was the last HRC race being spoilt by the pace car. Isn't there a way that the race could be stopped and restarted or a few extra laps tacked onto the end to compensate. HMC being a such a drawcard class deserve better.
i'm sure the drivers were just as ticked off as I was.
Anyway, having got that off my chest, I was rapt today when a friend gave me a free ticket for this weekend. Maybe the missing F5000's will have been found by then!!

The track limit is in fact 46 cars - for saloons, but a bit lower for single seaters Nigel, so you wouldn't ever get 50 F5000's racing at the same time.

I think you meant HMC (Historic Muscle Cars) not HRC (Historic Racing Club), who are effectively the organisers.

The use of Safety Cars has been one of mixed blessings. As a former flaggie for many years, the fact that most drivers tended to either ignore yellows or didn't slow, put the lives of the hard working volunteers in real danger, not to mention stranded competitors. Ever increasing speeds haven't helped either, so safety has to come first.

From a driver's perspective, a frustration having paid to race, but adding extra laps also stretches out the race programme and it may also affect fuel consumption calculations.

From a Series Handicapper's point of view, a total nightmare. Race Troll will probably correct me, but if the race has been 25% or less completed and red flagged, then it can be restarted from the original handicap positions or grid positions. Total restart.

Safety Car laps are always counted and if red flagged after 75%, the race is declared. An 8 lap race is an 8 lap race.

As in F1, if there was a means of controlling all cars between two points down to 75kph or whatever, by race control, then maybe the safety car wouldn't be required as often.

Come and say hello at the weekend Nigel - but please be trackside at 9:45am and 2:15pm each day, when we should have the numbers for you. Maybe not the spectacle of F5000's, but Saturday and Sunday race feedback would be appreciated from everyone, as it will affect our approach for 2016. Remember, we asked to be included this year - it wasn't an invite.

latest on ERC:

Withdrawals

#67 Paul Kendrick - Porsche 944 - teething problems with this car.
#1 Alan Ferguson - BMW M8 - what was thought to be a cylinder head gasket failure, turned out to be a cracked head.
#40 Adrian Dobbe - Vauxhall Viva 6 - mechanical issues, engine.

That moves up the reserves to maintain the 46 car grid:

#739 Grant Kern - MGB V8 - now in all ERC races
#231 John Hudson - BMW2002 - now in all ERC races

Car #83 -John Honore - Ferrrari 308GTB included Friday scratch race only at this stage, 1st reserve Saturday and Sunday handicap races. (Ferrari is currently for sale.)

Yep, I understand and support the need for the safety car but I think that the needs and expectations of the paying spectators needs to be considered also. It probably is but it's not always obvious. We all know that spectator numbers are already practically non existent and the sport doesn't want to lose any more of a dwindling resource. Last Saturday I reckon that if you removed all the crews and supporters from the 'crowd', there wouldn't have been that many people left. It must be very difficult for the organisers [and a considerable financial risk] to promote a motor racing event these days, and I take my hat off to them and to all of the volunteers that enable the event to take place. But there's always room for improvement and sometimes little things make a huge difference.
I hope Roger Williams can get "Old Blue" back in action this weekend. I saw John Greenwood racing his "Spirit of '76" at Le Mans in 1976. It was amazingly quick.
Looking forward to seeing a full grid of ERC competitors.

The crowd on Saturday was quite healthy with the main car park (behind the main ticket booth) full by just after lunch.

The organisers - plus the officials and even the MSNZ Stewards are bound by a strict set of rules as to how races will be run. The paperwork now even has to include any on track processions, hot laps, demonstrations etc. Just about everything is regulated, whether that is in the best interests of the spectators, drivers or not.

Totally agree that little things can make a huge difference and feedback is always appreciated - but it has to go back to the organisers.

Yes I agree with you that we are spoilt here in NZ with the numbers of classic cars that are around and come out to play from time to time. I'm not surprised to hear that they don't worry about spectators numbers in the US. They probably have more competitors attending and with track operating costs being comparable [?] with NZ it's affordable for them whereas we need spectators to subsidise the cost. I have no idea what it costs you in total for a day at the races, but I'm sure it's a tidy sum. I'm equally sure that if more spectators attended which had the flow on effect of reducing competitors costs then maybe more classics would come out to play - and more spectators would come along to watch. Sounds so easy doesn't it. lol.

Hi Ray
It was never stated that 50 cars would be racing. The promotional material specifically said there would be 50+ cars at the Festival. This is what was achieved. 26 cars were racing, 10 were on display in Hamptons and 17 were in demo's at lunch time and in the afternoon session.
We initially believed that we would top 60 cars, but the upcoming Monterey F5000 racing in August 2015 kept a lot of the overseas cars as we came nearer to commitment time for the Festival. Hopefully the BRM V12's, Ferrari V12 and the 3 seater F1 cars helped to compensate. As organisers, we apologise if you believe you were short changed. As always, we do our best! Regards Tony Roberts

That's a clever use of words there Tony to drag the punters through the gate. As it is a race meeting, which is advertising 50+ cars, one could not unfairly assume there will be 50 cars racing. I know I did, and it seems most other people arrived at the same assumption, and we have all been disappointed. While having 26 F5000 cars racing is no mean feat in itself, it is far from the 50 which it seems some people made a special effort to come and see based on the suggestive advertising.

Is there any reason why you cannot publish the entry lists on the NZFMR website leading up to the event? Even if it is just a straight list ( not by classes ) so it shouldn't hurt your program sales, it would be good to see who will be there. Most people will go regardless ( to spectate ), but if there are a couple of cars / entrants that pique their interest, they may go for more than 1 day per weekend. Just a suggestion. It would also eliminate the 50 cars / 26 racing / rest on display etc problem.

I have a few more ideas to improve things for both drivers and spectators, but no time now, I will post up later.

GD66
01-22-2015, 07:07 AM
Fair's fair, how realistic is it to expect 50 F5000s on the track and racing when that's never been remotely approached anywhere in the world ? To suggest that is a sneakily-worded con is disrespectful to the promoters of this and other categories, who appear to have worked hard to get still-impressive entry lists to the line.
Nobody could genuinely anticipate a grid of that size forming up, and it's a bit rich if that's all you have to complain about after a weekend that is envied around the world. Cheer up, son.

I wasn't complaining about the numbers Tony, merely responding to Nigel's post!

As JAFA assisted Barry Algie last year, with finance and time (and he wasn't the only one), I know his passion for a great Festival is genuine, but if a regular contributor/photographer on here posts a level of disappointment then he more than likely has a genuine point. Nothing is gained from just heaping praise on the hard working ones if there are also valid criticisms. Only a fool listens to praise and ignores valid criticism.

The organisers put a tremendous amount of work and effort into this Festival and are to be congratulated on what has become an iconic NZ event that continues to grow. Lessons are always learned. One valid criticism from one genuine person has to be balanced against the obvious enjoyment overall from that same person.

So, what you're saying is that we have no right to express an opinion. We should be grateful for whatever we get. If I'm paying to attend an event and it's not quite what I expected I think I should feel free to say so. I didn't say it was bad or a waste of time and money, only that I was a bit disappointed having thought, perhaps mistakenly, that I would be seeing 50+ F5000's on the track. Just because I'm a mere spectator doesn't mean that I can't express an opinion. If I bought a ticket to see the Stones and Mick Jagger wasn't there I would be disappointed even if it was a great concert. My point being that it could have been even better than it was.
So this "plonker" doesn't really care what you think rogered. You have your opinion and I have mine. End of story.

Whether you are advertising a 10cm high burger and delivering a 5cm high burger, or a mountain of chips and serving a small handful, you have to be extremely careful. Event advertising is no different.

I agree rogered. great event, fantastic grids, and I don't care about the historic knocking. When Noah was launching his Arc, their were never that many F5000's, big bangers etc on the grid and by 3 laps half the field had broken.
This is the number one historic race meeting in the country,....bar none.
The Muscle Cars, Historic Sports Sedan, F5000, F Juniors etc , FANTASTIC.......we can all be critics, but credit should be given....nothing is perfect and we should stand back and applaude,...... loudly.

That's why I'll be back this weekend. A shout out to all those series organisers, be it HMC, Sports Sedans, ERC, F5000. Historic Touring etc etc who are doing their darndest to get a field of cars out there. Sure some fields are bigger or more historically accurate than others but contrast this with the field size and lack of variety of most modern race meetings and we are very very lucky to have NZFMR. My glass is more than half full

Well, the crowd was much thinner this Friday than last week, so hopefully Saturday and Sunday will be better.

Craig Howser's Escort - #75 had a massive engine blow up going into turn 2 during our busy scratch race, so we finished under the safety car after 7 laps. Shame, as the leaders had just started lapping the slower stuff and to the best of my knowledge, despite the full grid, no panel damage - though Rogan did manage to spin the Cobra in the middle of the pack on lap 1 at the final hairpin.

#44, the XJS Jag's new gearbox or clutch has packed a sad so is out for the weekend.

#281 had a few issues at scrutineering so hopefully will be back tomorrow.

Big thanks to Andy Culpin and Byron at RaceFX. I was doing a wheel check before leaving the garage and one wheel stud was turning... They managed to remove the wheel and we opted to Mig weld all 4 studs (one had been done in the past anyway). Phew!

The ambulance/paramedics were over an hour late - so I still made practice.

Wow, more goodies : love that Halliday tribute Escort. Excuse the ignorance Nigel, but I've never been to Hampton : it does look as though cameramen are able to get good shots from pretty close to the track. That would make it something of an exception in terms of newer circuits !

GD66 - I believe that is the Halliday Escort, but I could be wrong!

All of my own pics are from the spectator areas GD66 and for my money, the photo opportunities either as paying spectators or as Media pass holding photographers, are as good as anywhere I have ever been to. Having access to the middle of the track gives you time to take pics from two or three great vantage points within the same race and without the hassles of overly high catch fencing.

Nigel, just go to the secretary's office and ask to sign the Photographer's disclaimer. If you don't have an orange Hi-Vis vest (please don't use yellow), you can borrow mine. I'll be around Grant Kern's big trailer on the road up to Hamptons.

Just check with the nearest flag post if you want to cross the track between races. This isn't Monaco or Silverstone and it is what makes spectating at HD's Classic/Historic events such a joy.

All we need is that massive support from the south now and again so that we can see some of those wonderful cars again now that I have a decent camera!

A much better crowd today than yesterday.

Car #281 was fixed and back in the fray today but it was a day of ups and downs for several of our drivers.

Most impressive return was car #75 after yesterday's engine blow up. Rob Berggren just happened to have a Ford Escort engine under his bench in one of the apartment garage units, so by the time lunch time came, car #75 was up and running again! Brilliant - but it kept the reserve list up!

Car #866 had issues and when fixed, found that a faulty radiator cap needed fixing - to be sorted overnight as there aren't many places stocking Renault Gordini parts locally!
Car #156 had a split radiator - but also returned after a replacement was sourced.

Sadly, in the afternoon handicap, we had our first panel damage of the weekend. #739 was faced with a spinning Cobra at Turn 1 and copped a damaged right front wing, but will race tomorrow. The Cobra will not run with us.

Car #146 freaked out when being caught by the two fast charging scratch guys and put himself off at turn 1 causing a little bit of body damage. Well done to Bruce Manon, overtaking the whole field, driving Mike Sexton's immaculate Escort, snatching the lead just before the final hairpin on the last lap.

Overall, a busy day on track with full grids for both handicaps and full grids for tomorrow (Sunday), still with reserves to call upon. Thankfully, our attrition rate appears to be lower than many smaller grids - which is a bit of a surprise to be honest! Well driven guys. Very proud of you. A couple of yellow flags certainly stopped the bulk of the faster cars getting to the front in the afternoon - typical of handicaps - yet they managed it during the morning race.

The red flag period when the hemi had to be retrieved has been edited.
I fell off the track on turn one , was careful coming back on not to get close to the SUPER IMMACULATE GULF Camaro

RacerT,
I have to take your side on this one - people expect too much a lot of the time ..... to have 26 F5000 cars racing is amazing, and would not happen anywhere else in the world ..... Really good to see your M10A high-wing is running, and quite a few McLaren's now in the field of cars.
Best wishes,
Peter Russell

At least you said middle-aged!
Lets change the venue to a back country road, the deep resonance of a turbo 2 litre 4WD and the sharp cackle of the anti-lag shattering the early morning silence. Sheep casually glancing towards the approaching dust cloud with a blue blur at the apex of this example of high technology battling the non-sanitised venue of the real world...scattering gravel like autumn leaves.....suddenly the middle-aged competitor relaxes for a brief second to wave to the old aged spectator, before continuing to master the laws of physics at 200kph with the skill of a matador.

He stands there agog, stunned by the bravery... in a cloud of dust with the morning sunlight piercing through like the three pronged spear of Maserati, reaches for his phone...waits for the connection and slowly smiles...
"Chris, Tony here...do you want to buy my McLaren? Yeah; I need to sell it so I can buy a rally car...it's real motorsport "

I understand Dave Abbott owns the two red ones, who owns the white one?

I'm not sure, but the on-track commentators said that all 3 cars reside in Christchurch.

]Hi Crunch. Better to be an old racer, than a middle aged spectator![/SIZE]

Being a middle aged spectator, I can still work my way up to being an old racer. God knows, the amount of money I've spent attending motor racing events on both sides of the ditch, even as a spectator, I could probably afford an almost half decent MGB to go racing in.

Yeah; I need to sell it so I can buy a rally car...it's real motorsport "

hmmm.. Maybe you should set your alarm to go off a little earlier than it did today

All this from the Navi seat, that's why 'the middle aged man' can wave.

Well written though.

For a man that has probably done more laps of HD than everyone else put together, I was distressed to see Tony Roberts still struggling at the hairpin and eventually spinning up. Tears welled in my eyes and I tried to suppress a sad smile when my 7 year old son then said...."Dad.....maybe that big chev has just got too much power for an old man to handle"

Don't worry Tony! I suitably disciplined him by buying him a 2 scoop ice-cream!

Biggest buzz, ever, sitting in the middle of a rolling start for Group C Cars. When those lights go out, the adrenaline, the sound and vibrations are something I'll never forget.

These cars were and are a very special part of 'modern' motorsport history. Great to see one here and hats off to Warwick for taking it on. I guess you all know its sister car won Le Mans in 1991 and here is Jonny Herbert doing a lap of honour in it at Le Sarthe in 2011. I was there and you have to imagine the sound. Great car, great driver, great team.

27502Am working on it!

In the meantime for Shoreboy 57, here's a photo of yours truly giving Ziggi ('they don't like it up them Mr Mannering") Brun in his 962 a hurry up at Brands some years ago. It was about as close as I ever got to the back of a Group C Porsche (I got him at Clearways on this lap and then the engine let go pretty spectacularly at Paddock Hill bend - "Ron" wasn't happy with me).

The other one are the two Aston Group C cars at Snetterton. I think Ray Mallock is in the Nimrod so I must have been in the EMKA. Fabulous bloody things but how someone drove them for 24 hours, I have no idea. The understeer on the EMKA in particular on tight tracks was totally knackering.27501

Holy cow! That MG vs Cobra could have been a lot worse!

True. Our only two car contact of the weekend, so considering the size of the grids (and four handicap races), quite amazing. The MGB V8/Cobra crunched the MG's right front wing and the Cobra sustained a bit of damage to the RHR guard. The lime green MGB V8, overtaken on turn 1 (inexperienced competitor!) freaked out and just dinged the wall, so that was the sum total of our panel damage for the weekend.

Great clip, also one of my favourite races of the day! That's one hell of a speed differential, I think you're right to say it's amazing more damage didn't occur. A couple of drivers looked a bit uncertain of what to do with a car coming up so quickly from behind. Bloody great from a spectator's viewpoint though. This and the class with the Corvette and 47 replica were my favourites by a long shot.

Yes, good fun, well driven, and jeez that Escort has got plenty of gnaw. But those ditherers you've mentioned Paul, are a huge hazard, do they not use their mirrors, or is it once-a-year drivers ?

To be fair to the slower guys, this series usually comprises 2 separate races - the "fast" group, and the "slow" group, so the speed difference between fastest and slowest in each race is nowhere near as great. It is probably the very first time about the slowest quarter of this weekends' grid have been in a race with cars as fast as Mr Manon, so it must have been a bit of an eye opener for them at the pace at which he caught and passed them. I think everyone in ERC did a sensational job, some of the other classes, with half the number of cars on the track and no where near the speed difference, had far too much biff and barge for my liking and left me feeling rather dismayed at the often unnecessary carnage to what were immaculate cars at the start of proceedings.
