This fabulous scale model of Chris Amon's Maserati 250F was built by enthusiast Tony Lucas. Its one of several scale models he has built replicating famous New Zealand race cars of the past.

Here are PDL I and PDL II together. PDL I was made from a standard Mustang to which Tony scratch built the flares from plastic card, scratch built the interior, and added new wheels etc. PDL II is from a kit of Charlie Kemp's famous IMSA Mustang II from which Tony then made an entire new front from scratch. Is that about right Tony?

Fantastic! What is the sheet covering material? I really admire model makers and there are so many details I am sure many would love to know. The wheels for example on all your models are exceptionally well done - an aspect that lets down many models.

As a youngster, I treasured the book by Rex Hays, but never graduated beyond commercial kits.

04-13-2015, 12:31 AM
Hi Chaindrive Thanks
The wheels are 1/8th scale and will withstand atleast 12kgs centre axle loading
Here is a closeup photo after undercoating and before a few hrs of sanding, to paint
And the wheel balancing weight is to large
I was or am going to see if I can get some vacuum chromed, Markson

ERC
04-13-2015, 12:32 AM
Wow! 3D printers will certainly make a huge difference to genuine and amateur model makers.

I have always been a kit builder since the 2/- Airfix vintage/veteran car issues and never managed a scratch built.

Of recent kits, I bought several Tamiya Jaguar Mk 2 kits whilst recuperating from neck surgery 17 years ago. What a stunning model. About 15 transfers (OK, decals) for the walnut dash alone made this a must buy kit.

The price of 1/43 models is way out of my price range, but most manufacturers of larger scale interesting models don't produce kits, just ready assembled. More's the pity.

Got your PM Chaindrive. I'll see what I have got.

Worth how much? Any idea? I think you'll find it is the E Type ERA. The A/B/C/D types were the upright originals.

Given that both ERA and BRM were based on national pride, I suppose that it is appropriate that I photographed this today, St George's day...

Just checked on Ebay. The last one went for about 38GBP!

The MRRC 4WD Mercedes unbuilt slot racing kit I sold in NZ, fetched a lot more than that!

Make them '37 Chevs, got them out recently one made as a bit of a racer with the twin carb stovebolt, the other unmade, also have a Willys flip front Gasser, also built with a huge V8 - actually went out and bought glue and some paint, am going to restore the built ones first, [ made them first in 1971 as a 20 something, had just got married and a mate married around the same time both like kitsets, the Chevs are AMT and were made in NZ, must have imported the mould from the USA ] then see if I want to do the new one plus a couple of 1990 NA model MX5's, was going to one original and one, with a V8, from a box of bits I have .. and it is still 2016 [ not 2106 ]..

** Update July 2019 - still talking / thinking about the re-build and build -left the glue and paint in Australia - have to buy some more - Now back on the bucket list !!

Would like to find a source for the Shell Racing New Zealand decals as used in late sixties/early seventies which featured Shell logo and white steering wheel on red background. They were on just about every NZ car raced in the era. I had a couple on my Lotus when I raced it in Historics. Full size or scale are ok.

Thanks for suggestions guys. I do have those Shell year books among others showing these decals on various cars, but none are good enough to use as a reference. Your photo is the best I have seen Ken, and as luck would have it, the very car I am modelling, the 49T as raced at Puke and Levin 1968 ( I was there) before the big change to Gold Leaf colours at Wigram. Will scale it off as best I can and consult a graphics dude. Good work team!!

Hi Rob,

I guess I haven't been looking at this thread for a while! I've got an original Shell Racing sticker from around 1972, which I had copied and digitally repaired by a graphic designer friend a few years ago. I emailed it to Dale Mathers when he was looking for it (he confirmed it was the version he was after) and I'll happily forward it to you too - just PM me your email address.

The one thing I'll highlight with it though is that the red in my jpg is a little too orange, but that sort of thing can be digitally altered (apparently).

That is true but there is more to the story. Jim Hall originally design the Chaparral 2H to use a fully enclosed cockpit featuring a series of mirrors so he could see out. It only had a single front windscreen and a window either side. There were blind spots where the front wheels were.

The car was originally intended to race in 1968, at which time Hall himself was still driving before he had his nasty shunt at Las Vegas. But delays in its completion meant it wasn't ready until the 1969 season, by which time John Surtees was recruited to drive it. But Surtees hated the car, didn't like the enclosed cockpit, and demanded the drivers seat be raised, and an opening cut in the roof so he could see out over the top. According to Jim Hall, this completely ruined the cars centre of gravity.

But in creating the changes meant the 2H wasn't ready for the start of the 1969 Can-Am, so a customer McLaren M12 was purchased. Initially it ran as supplied, without the big rear wing. The wing appeared for the first time in Round 3 at Watkins Glen.

The Chaparral 2H finally made its race debut at Round 5, at Edmonton, but Surtees was way off the pace, qualifying over 5 seconds behind pole man Denny Hulme, and the situation never really got any better. In fact, Surtees returned to the McLaren for Round 7 at Bridgehampton where he immediately qualified third fastest and was much more competitive. The 2H returned for Round 9 at Laguna Seca with a MASSIVE wing perched up above the car (as below), and raced only once more, at Riverside. This was one of the few Jim Hall designs that didn't work, but it would have been fascinating to see how it might have performed without the changes.

Dad's Merit kit built Talbot Lago - with engine detail, making it more expensive than the standard Merit fare. I think the basics were 7/6d, with the Airfix kits 2/- at the time.

Why can't they produce model kits today of these great old F1 cars at a modest price? Dad's Alfa - also with engine detail needs a bit of repair work as do one or two others, but these days, you can't even just pop into a local toy shop for a tube of glue for plastics!

I have now put the Big scale version of the Healey's in their own covered cabinet a perspex box on a black base - now have to paint the coreflute and timber that I will use to stage them with other Austin Healey regalia - badges and a background photo.
Another work in progress.!

They will be above an American Corvette Garage scene with road and race Corvette's a Tow Truck a Tyre Truck and garage workshop tools and equipment including Hoists with cars on - here is an early attempt at it.
Again need a background scene of an old garage with signs etc..
Yet another work in progress. !!

The components - base with Snap-on Hoists and some coreflute, and the two [ so far ] sets of tools.

Early idea with vehicles in place but no tools - and need some mechanics.

Note from the photographer ;
" That shot of the Custaxie slot car is mine. I wish people would credit the original poster when they use shots they find on the internet.
Here's another shot of the rear of the car showing the Colour Me Gone.
That car has a hard life. "

Here are the two photos and at the end will acknowledge to photographer who owned the Slot car

I had that slot car body, dropped on a home made sidewinder chassis - think I bought it from Martins. My paint job was even worse!

On the Dunedin thread is the continuing - as yet incomplete - story of Jim Bennett and his Furi cars.
The story is up to Furi 2, but Jim's main Racer has been Furi 9 [ Impulse ] for many years.
A single seater in a very 1930's/40's style, but like the Midget Jim raced in the 1960's.

62259

62261

an early photo - seen on the " Dunedin " thread - from Jim's archives ;

62260

Photos are on this thread as it appears that " Chaindrive " is doing a tribute to Jim Bennett.

progress so far [ Tony " borrowed " your photos as I tend to do ! ]

62262

62263

62264

a couple of details of the real car ;

Jim Bennett's own words
" A proper old type single seater like the midget raced in the 60's always held some appeal. Having always liked the appearance of the Jamieson twin-cam Austin 750 of 1934 I decided to create a look-a-like. I would have preferred to use a water cooled 4 cylinder motorcycle engine but the rules of the Classic movement meant using oldish components. A Hillman Imp seemed the only really suitable engine that I could think of that would have a similar specification and similar power to the original Austin which had a very special 750 alloy twin-cam putting out around 112 BHP at 7000rpm in 1934!
A boot load of bits were acquired from a long time friend. As design progressed on the Austin Look-a-like it was decided to utilise Imp parts for most of the car including the front hubs and kingpins, attached to a piece of tube for an axle, rear mounted gearbox inverted got the drive the right way and conveniently lowered the propeller shaft 100mm allowing a low seating position like the Austin. As the Imp steering rack was used this meant that the engine had to be leaned a bit to the left for the steering column to clear the distributor. A Shorrock supercharger from my squirrel like collection was fitted behind the motor, above the foot-well, and driven by a shaft running alongside the cylinder head. To tidy the appearance up another Imp cam cover was fitted over this tipped over at the opposite angle to the engine. This gave the appearance of a twin-cam a bit like the Austin and has provided as much fun listening to comments as driving the car does."

Like the last comment ;

Chaindrive - we await further photos of the progress and do not worry about " The Home for the Bewildered ".

More of the Furi 9 story will appears soon on the Dunedin thread - just have to post on Furi's 3 to 8.

Only Model Bus I ever had was a Lincoln Toys - Micro Model - of a Bedford, painted blue, no windows or interior detail around 1;43 scale.

This from a for sale ad - mine was deep blue and silver - no signage - from memory of about 60 years ago.
