In 1982, a group of Kiwi's went to the USA, initially for an Austin-Healey International Rally, 30th anniversary of the first Austin - Healey, in late July ;

David also entered a 1960 Austin Healey Sprite for Molly Gibb to drive #174 - now do I have a photo, must check.

Ol' Yella II has been to Hampton Downs in recent years.

Program and Ticket : wow, US $20.00 for three days, arrived in Monterey Friday afternoon, straight to the track to watch some practice then the next two days there, all day, a lot of time spent at the Corkscrew .

And we got a Pass and the holder too !! I believe, long time ago. Yes, Ken I do feel better, but wish I have gone there again in the last 33 years. Still have to get to Bathurst as well, on my bucket list and more easily done from QLD.

Brings back great memories of a fantastic event with cars I never thought I would ever see.
I went again in 1986 when the featured car was Mercedes and I have quite a few photos from then too.
The events seemed very low key with open pits to spectators and the cars owners were very enthusiastic and friendly

I was amazed to see Gullwings and my favourite was The little " Alfa Romeo TZ's " not one but several.
a great event as part of a great trip we did in that year in that VW Kombi.

The Kombi came from Oxnard Ventura, and after Laguna Seca, went to Mexico and Vancouver BC, Canada - where I left it with BMC BOY and the two other Healey people, [ we chipped in 25% of the cost ] they then went South and East eventually finishing in Baltimore

Photo of the track in 1982 ; the famous " Corkscrew " is at top left. Frank Gardner likened it to " the Dipper " at Bathurst, as it drops away and you have to turn where you think it is not when you can see it.

Some Vintage Cars that were there ; The Auto Union 16 cylinder GP car did Demonstration laps only on both Saturday 21, and Sunday 22 August there are two cars here not mentioned in the program - can anyone ID them, one look American Indy style racer the other English Sports car.

The 'English' sports car, is I think.... the 1928 Stutz DV Black Hawk. It came 2nd in the 1928 LeMans race which was won by Barnato and Rubin in a 4 1/2 litre Bentley. The Stutz was a straight eight of nearly 5 litres and American of course. The drivers were Brisson and Bloch. The car was 'lost' for many years after the race and resurfaced 40 years later.......oddly no one seemed to know what it was or its illustrious history....amazing. Value? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$. :) [All of the above open to scrutiny]

The other two are I would say, were board-track racers..... the blue one definately on a Model T Ford chassis. The white one says its a Deusenberg......it has a twin plug head by the looks......interesting machines........and VERY dangerous.

AMC072, thanks, for the information - some of the cars were on display and even in the carparks, so nothing in the program and memory 33 years ago, half my lifetime is fading, thank the fact I have the photos and the program.. was an amazing time for a guy who had only ever been to Pukekohe, Baypark, 66 to 84 and Manfield / Ohakea,for the 81 reunion, plus Kerepehi for a grass track meeting in 1967, about 3 weeks after I bought my first car a 1960 Austin Seven [ Mini ]

Further to the above photos..... the tag on the number 3 car says Deusenberg. I doubt very much whether it is, not the engine anyway, as I think I am right in saying all Deusenberg engines were straight 8's........right from the very first one. Lots of those board-racers were Ford powered, and that machine looks to have an after market OHV head, Rajo etc on a 4 cylinder block. Interesting chassis though.

The give-away that the big black tourer ISNT English is the wheel knock-off hubs. The Germans, Spanish, French and American had these large spinners whereas the English and Italians went for the finer version, mostly 2 eared, sometimes 3. The Spanish Pegaso car had large 2 eared spinners which always looked to me to be out of proportion, but on the German Mercedes Benz cars they looked ok. Even on a Vintage Bentley, itself a large car, the spinners were much finer. I think I have seen pictures of the Stutz classic racing in modern times, but it is on smaller wheels.......probably sensible, as I imagine racing tyres for the large 21inch would be hard to come by.

I wonder if the Austin 7 Mini still exists ??

Thanks for the info - the program shows a 1916 Deusenberg Indy - race #3, 5400 cc Entrant / Driver John Thorpe / Nelson Thorpe, so assumed that is the car - there is no photo in the program unlike some other cars in each of the classes.

The Austin 7 Mini, was sold to a school mate in 1968 [ by then had widened front wheels by Dave Jolley, twin SU's and a modified exhaust by Rob Williams of Allard and Ford V8 Coupe fame, mentioned in the Hillclimbs thread and elsewhere ] the mate rebuilt the engine and used it for a while don't know if it still exists reg was AW 309, as would have had the old style 2 years plates of 6 numbers when new in 1960. Plates were changed every two years and a sticker issued for the second year to confirm registration.

Have just noticed that the dealer details on the number plate surround for " Masterson " " Ventura ", well the Porsche 550 featured above #222 was raced by John Masterson from Ventura, California entered by the CA Vintage Car Co. so maybe the same guy !!

Thanks, Spinner32. Lago-Talbot seems correct to me, has a French look to it. ] The Mclaren a 1969 M6B GT [ race # 4, ] was owned by Jack Flaherty from Pebble Beach California, so not far to come for the racing, it is in the background in several of my shots.

This is an amazing thread! Loving these pics you guys. Amazing to think many of these cars, such as the Cobras, Porchase 911s and 917s, McLaren M6GT etc, weren't actually all that old in 1982, but were already desirable classics.

it was an amazing weekend, we. " BMC BOY ", myself, and friends, Kiwi and American, loved the racing, had social fun,
sat on the Corkscrew, between, the long walk to the pits, and then back up the hill.

Now been running for over 40 years..

The Cars were brilliant, some I had never ever seen, and there would be several of the same " Alfa Romeo GTZ's " Mercedes Gullwings, et al.

Porsche - it was there theme meeting.. as a friend from San Diego, A Healey guy said " Bloody Hair Dryers " = aircooled

Enjoy, I have run out of photo's , for the moment, but Ross has a few more.. !!

Had forgotten about this thread of mine until today when I went looking for a photo - which I must have deleted.
Hopefully it is in here - my shot of the Buick Nailhead engine of Ol' Yeller 2.

There has been a photo of the " Baldwin Special " when it raced in NZ 1999 and again in 2005 and 2006 which prompted me to look up some stuff.

Not to do with Monterey in this picture but here is the Baldwin and the Lycoming [ USA vs NZ Specials ] The Baldwin has raced at Laguna Seca, have a bit of a story from ex-pat Kiwi Mike Ryan who is its current keeper for the owner.

Some of the story on the car ;

Details from a book I have : " 1946 Ford chassis [ shortened ] and fitted with a Mercury 59A block of 284.4 c.i. [ 4660 cc in English Money - " Old Money " as they say ]. "
Was driven by Hastings Harcourt at Pebble Beach in 1952 - the precursor to Monterey, a Road Course.

Stewart Quertier who posted the photo writes ; " Jim Herlinger from California , in the Baldwin Mercury built in 1949 Jim came out to the Southern Festival of speed 3 times first in 1999. then in 2005 Jim left it with me here in NZ , and they return in 2006 , Jim invited my son Mark to drive the Baldwin at Monterey Historics in 2007 something he will never forget "


Mike writes ;" Roger, I've been looking after the Baldwin since Jim passed away for it's current owner Rob Manson. A car with great California racing provenance. It's now on average 5 seconds a lap quicker than when Jim owned it. Mostly chassis tuning has accomplished this. Jim was a damned good driver and a fun guy to be around. We miss his presence. "

THE BALDWIN “PAYNE” SPECIAL
This car is probably the most memorable “Sports Rod” of the early days of the sports car movement in America, being a typical example of a late 1940s "California Hot Rod", carried a step beyond what the normal hot rodders were doing at the time. Known in the States as an AV8, i.e. an A Type Ford chassis housing a Ford V8 motor.

In 1947, my late father, Philip Payne, drove across the States in a Brooklands Riley, before working at Roger Barlow’s ‘International Motors’ in Los Angeles. He became interested in the local sports car and hot rod scene and was an early member of the California Sports Car Club, as well as The Glendale Sidewinders (SCTA).

He purchased this Special (91 S 663) in November 1947, from Willis Baldwin of Santa Barbara – the “father” of road racing specials. Baldwin built this, the first of four specials, in 1947, using the frame of a 1932 Ford. My father quickly replaced the Cadillac side-valve, installing a hot 4.4 litre (268.4 c.i.) Mercury Flathead with an Iskenderian track-grind cam, Evans 9:1 heads and triple-carb intake manifold, producing some 175 bhp @ 5,000 rpm. Drive is through a lightened flywheel, 10 in Mercury clutch and three-speed Ford Pilot transmission with a home-built remote shift linkage to a 3.78:1 rear axle. The cowl covers a split-centre Ford radiator whilst the grille consists of curved lengths of welding wire. The bonnet is of 20 guage alloy and the air scoop is from a North American aircraft, whilst an Auburn dash is used. Front cycle-type wings were made from spare wheel-cover bands.

The “Baldwin ‘Payne’ Special” proved very competitive and successful in many Southern Californian events, ranging from circuit racing to hill climbs and dry lake trials. Returning to Portsmouth, England in October 1950, my father continued to sprint the car (FTP 348), gaining successes at Southsea Motor Club events, held at the famous Goodwood circuit, as well as Gosport Automobile Club speed trials. Bill Boddy wrote a very favourable ‘The Editor Encounters A Hot-Rod’ article in “Motorsport” of January 1952, having previously been very sceptical of the performance of Hot Rods – this lead to a very heated exchange of transatlantic letters in that magazine!

Naturally, the car has a very special place in the Payne household (Philip’s widow Vicky, and son Stephen), and is superbly maintained by Alan Collins, the Jaguar specialist, of Maldon, Essex. An overhaul was completed prior to the car’s appearance at The Cartier Style et Luxe at the 2001 Goodwood Festival of Speed, keeping the car as original to its’ illustrious sports rod heritage. "

Ken H, One of them I lost the one of the Ol' Yeller 2, engine - but is in here - my filing system is not great and I have been trying to rename/ renumber in better sequence photos to get them in better order - It takes ages.

The " Baldwin ' Payne ' Special " is I had believed a different car to the " Baldwin ' Mercury ' Special " but reading the above article maybe not so sure !! **[ see note below ] as it was originally Cadillac powered and then Mercury.
** Seems the " Baldwin ' Payne ' " is in the UK and the " Baldwin ' Mercury ' is with Mike Ryan in the USA [ California ] close to Ken H maybe ??
I have just received from another ex Pat Kiwi Mike Ryan a photo of the engine in the Baldwin as it is now !
The car looks great in both forms -more Hot Rod in the " Payne " photo.

Here is the engine - thanks for " Your Inputs " Ken - as you would say.

Often seen racing at Laguna Seca each August.

As an aside :
Not anywhere like Laguna Seca but, off to Pukekohe this weekend for the first day of the ITM Supersprint for the Supercars. 70 laps of the 1.75 mile [ yes old money] track - may be varied a bit with chicanes and kinks ..
Hope Scott McLaughlin gets his win to equal Craig Lowndes for most wins in a season.
Support Races are Tranz-Ams /Muscle Cars and Formula Ford [ will probably miss the SsangYong Utes though - or have to get there early..

Pamphlet on the " Sly McFly " chain of Restaurants - this one from the Monterey, Cannery Row one which we ate at.
A hand drawn Map of the USA / Canada border and on to Kitsalano Vancouver BC, Canada to get to a friends house.
SVRA Brochure - their members were racing at Laguna Seca.
Cold Spring Tavern brochure with a History of the Tavern, near Santa Barbara up in the Hills behind the city.

Went there a couple of times, first with some Austin Healey people and later 4 Kiwis in a Kombi went again on our way North from Los Angeles to eventually Vancouver BC.

You would have passed right by Los Olivos and Mattei's Tavern as you headed north from Cold Spring Tavern in 1982. The taverns were about one day of stagecoach travel back in the 1880s. Sorry I missed seeing you all back then. We had a VW Kombi also at that time.

Ken H, yes me too, we knew several of the same people, the Healey Guys ; -
Hans Nohr, Walt Glendenning,
and the Apprentice Eric Grunden who worked for Jim Mann who ran a VW workshop owned a 3000 as was in partnership with Walt in " Absolutely British ".. Others would have been to Moss Motors too, as all working on Healeys and other " British " Sports Cars ..
I think we went to Moss Motors at the time - can;t remember exactly where it was but think near Santa Monica.
