Would that McLaren be the same one that was at the Racing Car Show January 1965?

My wife, an Elvis fan didn't know about that film. Neither did I.

Ray,
Yes this was the McLaren at the 1965 Racing Car Show.

Allan,
Jerry Entin was the owner of the McLaren M1A as well as the Cheetah when the Elvis movie, "Spinout"was made.

Steve Holmes
12-29-2016, 09:25 PM
Well done guys. Right on the money.

Re THX 1138, they used Lola T70MkIII coupes with modified bodywork, although I don't know what the red car is. It looks neat though. I believe this is the car. Anyone know what it is?

Incidentally, when George Lucas created American Graffiti, he used THX 1138 as John Milners licence plate on his yellow 32 Ford coupe.

Steve,
That looks like a kit car of one of the best looking cars ever, in my opinion, the 1966 Ferrari 330 P3.

Its from a 1976 howler called Cannonball, which was based on the Cannonball Sea To Shining Sea road race, and before Cannonball Run came along. It was a terrible movie, in which a bunch of cool cars got wrecked. Check it out here:

Here is an easy one highlighting a 1973 Mustang. ( Among many others !)

Ken, the original, and the best, Gone In 60 Seconds. Way better than the remake.

Steve Holmes
12-30-2016, 09:10 AM
There were two Mustangs built for the movie, one of which was used for close-ups/incar and was crushed straight after filming. The other, the car that got wrecked during the chase scene, still exists.

The original Vanishing Point. There was a remake in 1997, but not nearly as good. Interestingly, the car that drove into the bulldozers at the end of the original was a 1967/68 Camaro. In the remake they ran a Dodge Challenger into the bulldozers.

Two Lane Blacktop. I love this movie. Not a lot of dialogue, but all cool characters. Incidentally, the '55 Chevy was also used in American Graffiti.

Used cars with Kurt Russell was another pretty ordinary movie. If you want to include bike movies there is Sliver Dream Racer (UK) with David Essex and Beau Bridges, Little Fauss and Big Halsey (US) with Robert Redford and Michael Pollard and Side Car Racers (Aus) with Ben Murphy, Peter Graves, Wendy Hughes and John Meillon.

H.B Halicki certainly put everything into it when he did these movies. He was injured in the first 60 second movie when the 73 Mustang hit a pole and this last stunt cost him his life in 1989.

I enjoy watching some of these old movies because of the cars used and in the background, and movies about flying in the Korean war that were made in the 50s are similar as the aircraft were still around and flying at the time. One interesting movie is "On the Beach" which has a race in it.

No one has really mentioned TV - especially British TV.

Some decent cars often make an appearance in modern series, such as Midsomer Murders (There was one older one where an ex F1 Cooper won the concours...)

A couple of more recent series are set in a past age, such as Inspector George Gently, (196O's), North East UK and the 'Father Brown' Mysteries, set in the mid 50's. In an earlier series, Hugo Spiers had a nice RME Riley as his police car.

Other UK series have featured an Alvis (Stephen Fry) and Inspector Linley, (Bristol). Morse's 3.4 Jag was almost as famous as he was!

Oh and for films, most James Bond films had a fair selection of cars as did some Peter Sellers comedies.

OK Ray...lets talk the English-
Z cars ....featuring Cops in Zephyrs.
Early age Inspector Morse drove a MK 1 Jaguar- check out the rear seat to confirm.
Sweeney Flying Squad.... Cops in MK2 Jags with a super cool theme music.
New Avengers with John Steed and his XJ Coupe with the massive flares ..and Joanna Lumleys long legs.
Early Avengers.....Mrs Peel...Lotus, John Steed ...Bentley Boys Bentley.
Inspector Poirot always had excellent early 30s period Daimlers for the Toffs , Austins for Taxis
Been watching the Saint on Sky...sure he drivers the Volvo, but better than that he was driving a Lotus racing car, baddies were in a MK3 Zephyr 4-distinctive grille.

Michael Clark
01-06-2017, 09:59 AM
John, what about a Volvo - perhaps a P1800S?? - driven by Roger Moore ... a real name, not a helpful instruction

Maybe that was The Saint

From the States - Maxwell Smart used both a Sunbeam Alpine or Tiger, and a Kharmann Ghia at different times

And for fellow Alfaholics - Dustin Hoffman in The Graduate!~

I remember that episode! A Formula 1 race at Brands Hatch...

On a slightly different tack, anyone remember the Eric Sykes silent comedies 'The Plank' or I think 'The Coffin'. In one of them, James Hunt was driving the Ford Transit van!

Yep, you got it Michael. This Capri appeared briefly in a couple of early Professionals episodes, with its custom wide-body, and was driven by Doyle. The series then switched to a standard model Capri for Bodie, and an Escort RS2000 for Doyle.
