View Full Version : Race Programmes and entry lists - including sales and wants
Thought I'd start of this thread as a resource for anyone wanting to sell, buy or give away race programmes, but also as a resource for posting scanned entry lists. As those who have dipped into my pictures thread will know, other contributors such as Milan have been invaluable in filling in some gaps, but I have felt that maybe there is a need for a specific thread.
Although the interweb is continually expanding, as people load historic race information, resources in some areas are often very difficult to find, especially in NZ. This could also include minor events, so up to anyone to ask for info, or post it.
I do have several duplicate race programmes, I'd be more than happy to swap or sell, but I am short of several race programmes particularly from Pukekohe in the 1980's.
Sell/swap: I can offer a couple of May 28th 1977 Donington reopening race programmes. Quite thick and very much collector's items I would have thought.

I have some old programmes 1969 puke grand prix, dunlop Levin dec 72 ,1979 los angeles grand prix of endurance weekend imsa cars , heatway rally, oran park 1971,peter stuyesant series 1978 and 1977 , ohakea GP 82, baypark 197 2and 73 ,manfeild 74 and 76 if these are of any interest to anyone,I do have more this is the first box I have gone through

The Hillclimb features in the latest NZ Classic Driver .. being the back page article ;
The Classic event has been run every two years since resurrected in 1993. previously run in the 1950's and 1960's.

Rhys, Sandy's book was quite inaccurate about a few things including when Baypark Closed, when Peter Hanna passed away .. and this ..

Isn't it sad that when folks produce books where a little more research might give a whole lot more accurate information? Some time in the future they become the "truth" because it's written.

The large bundle of practice time sheets, grid sheets and results sheets will make wonderful reading.

A couple of books - not race programme's that i have at the moment.
The Stirling Moss biography - that is my late Uncle Ed [ Eddie of NSCC fame ] Dowding's - published in 2001 -Soft cover in 2002.
It was given to him by his Son John [who did the Austin Healey Le Mans Relay Race photos on the Austin Healey thread ] , John's wife and Son Ed's Grandson around that time when Ed was 82.

The other is a bargain I found at an Op Shop in Tauranga - purchased for 50 cents
The Motor Manual - published annually [ more or less - not during the Wars ] by Motor Magazine since 1903 - this is the 36th Edition 1959;
Unsure if still published today - as is for the home or backyard Mechanic to fettle his vehicle ;

Trying to tidy up the slides, digitised and still to be digitised - and it is a total nightmare!
I seem to be missing the entry list for the 1989 TACCOC Whenuapai meeting, so if anyone can post a scan, I'd really appreciate it. As was often the case, when flagging, getting an entry list or a programme wasn't exactly easy. Back in those pre transponder days, apart from one or two regulars, most cars had a number allocated by the organisers and it was different every time, making dating easier.
Stripping the slides to identify what film markings sometimes helps, not always, but occasionally, spending 20 minutes or more trying to date a slide proves fruitless, as Google has its limitations.
Was there a 1988 Whenuapai? I have no diary entry nor a negative film that ties anything in.

The later roll bar appears to be too low. Early screen wasn't full width. Small details like this certainly help to (approximately) date pics.

Remi, cannot help with the date of the event, but I remember " Performance Tyre Co " - back in 1975 I first went there for some Pirrelli tyres for my Austin Healey Sprite Mark 3, I was given a sticker, which went on my Racing Helmet.
At the time PTC was a small business in Morningside, on New North Road not far from Colin Waite Panelbeaters [ still there ]
The helmet - I still have - bit hard to see the blue sticker !!

Helmet is a " Max Cheshire GT6 ", and when I competed in my Triumph GT6, I think a few people believed I had my name on my helmet - Not so.

Tony Roberts was driving the Alfa when I arrived in 1983, not a Jaguar? Yet several others seem to be driving cars I remember from the early 1980's. Then I checked the late Owen Fausett was driving a Sunbeam Rapier, which I thought came after his Lotus Cortina.
Ray Williams was still with Elvie with the Porsche 930 Turbo which is a 1983 car!!!! Chris Watson was driving his TR5 which I'm sure was also after 1984.

- Owen had the Rapier in the late 1980's early 1990's - I knew him when working in New Lynn, 1988 - 1992, he had a Car Grooming business .. raced the Rapier at Whenuapai, and I think the Domain Hill Climb.
Owen was a good guy - used to come in to work and we would talk cars - for most of the visit - the business bit took less time ..

I think the photographs I took for the August meeting were on the Saturday afternoon practice - in the wet? I moved into a different rented house on the Sunday.
So many helpful, supportive, knowledgeable people filling in the gaps. Although we think that Google is the answer to all our prayers, it isn't, as unless people post stuff on there, we can't find it!

Milan, The 1986 Porsche Club Le Mans Relay Race - thanks for the programme - entry list.
I see my [ was mine ] Triumph TR4A was entered by Charles Matschek, part of TR Team #2 morning race.
I had sold the car to him in 1985 to help fund buying my " Family Home " - the house at Sarsfield Street that was owned almost since built in 1921 by our family Great Uncle in 1923, then his wife as survivor then her sisters in law, [ Great Aunt then Grandmother ] and finally in 1981 my Father, before passing on to me.
Sadly we sold it in 1995..
Here the TR4A outside the garages known as " Kerbside Motors " in around 1984..

See Chris Watson in the TR5, that competed at the AHCCNZ Otaua HillClimbs and had that big off at Manfield, when he rolled with just a simple Roll Bar for protection and no windscreen. Fortunately Chris was OK and the car was repaired.
Tony Herbert was there in the Ginetta G4 that Remi Rutkowski now owns in France, and has featured on TRS.

Martin Adams also rolled Chris Watson's TR5 at Pukekohe, on the entry to Castrol, just after I'd put the camera down, as at that stage, we had enough marshals to have two flagging, one observer and two on incidents...
Thanks again for that. Yes indeed. Many well known names at the time, but apart from one race in the Allegro Equipe in 1985 (honest!) and a couple with the MG Montego, I didn't really start racing until mid 1991, about 20 years after my first sprints with the 998cc Mini Cooper.

As posted once before, part of what I am doing is an ever growing spreadsheet with car/driver combinations at race meetings with their race number and this is an aid when doing the photograph or slide dating.
One of those jobs that will take for ever but done whilst the TV is on in the evening. Dip into it now and again and amazing how many different drivers there must have been over the last 35 years as I am not listing all of them by any means, mainly those I either photographed or were regulars.
I often wonder why so many gave up - most sports have a turnover of 30% a year.

I have no programmer for that Remi, just a TACCOC Classic Endurance race day in May. Tony competed in one of the lead up races.
I seem to have mislaid a few race programmes! Must be something to do with my wife shuffling a few bits to clean my office carpet when I was away!
I seem to have a query that the internet hasn't resolved, regarding John Billington racing the MG Montego at Pukekohe, car #22. I had it down as the Nissan Mobil 500 either 1987 or 1989, but it doesn't appear on the only website I have found with an entry list. It doesn't list the other races on the programme either.
I have isolated in my list, all my Pukekohe slides and spent many a happy hour sorting them on the basis of date, film number (where known), slide number and where on the track I was. This has resolved a whole heap of queries - and created a few more.
John Billington raced the VK / VL in this era.
He ran the MG in the early 90s

Thanks again Milan. I realise now that it wasn't the actual Nissan Mobil 500 grid! I have no other pics of cars in the above grid so as I was flagging, I must have just grabbed a couple of the MG.
I had a Montego at the time followed by another (2.0Efi), then a high mileage Montego Turbo I had for a year. Great cars!
The Turbo was a real hoot and only ever let me own once, just before Taupo, needing a transporter back to Auckland. Just a $5 vacuum hose. As with the others, being FWD, drove like a big Mini. Also the 2.0Efi was more economical than my wife's very early, pre-twin Cam 1500cc Toyota MR2.

I have been busy searching UK race programmes for the pre 1980 TVR Racers Facebook group, as one member is writing a book and wanted some programme details. Another is researching DRW Clubmans and F100 cars, so rather than just scan and send them, I have started a web page with scans of programme covers and some race entry lists. Very much a scattergun approach and whilst early Mallory Park and Silverstone stuff may not be of much interest to most Kiwis other than maybe F5000 and Formula Junior, I know there are several UK residents popping into this and other websites, desperate for information.
Some scans are from a secretarial or officials' copy, some are from our own programmes and notated as to non-starters, grid positions, results. Some are from unmarked mint copies.

I was dismayed when I fronted up to the ticket office at Hampton Downs for the Speed Works TRS meeting yesterday.
When I asked for a ticket ($40) and a programme I was informed that they were not providing programmes and I would have to download an app to get information on events and entrants.
Not having a "smart phone" i spent the day not knowing what the next race was going to be, or who was driving what.
Surely in a five meeting series they could have produced a generic programme, funded mainly by advertising, and added a two page insert showing events and entrants at each individual meeting.
This was done for the Peter Stuyvesant Series in the seventies and the Peter Jackson Series in the nineties.

Very annoying Milan. The least they can do is to publish everything on a website, (before the event) rather than through an App. I don't normally use a mobile either. It lives in the car now and again, merely as a means to let my wife know when I am heading home.
Phone cost under $100 and I pay $20 a year (Vodafone International Plan - which they never advertise).
Judging by the number of friends who manage to lose them or update them at vast expense, I'd rather put the money towards a Goodwood trip.
As an aside, Leadfoot publish their entry list before the event and so does Goodwood - but I still buy the programmes.

anyone who has surplus Motocrcyle racing programmes i'm looking for some please. i'm currently putting a guide to all the road racing circuits together as well as purchased a collection of photos from several decades from the late 1950's. some have been labelled but a number are not individually so programmes would be useful in identifying them. I was dismayed when I fronted up to the ticket office at Hampton Downs for the Speed Works TRS meeting yesterday.
When I asked for a ticket ($40) and a programme I was informed that they were not providing programmes and I would have to download an app to get information on events and entrants.
Not having a "smart phone" i spent the day not knowing what the next race was going to be, or who was driving what.
Surely in a five meeting series they could have produced a generic programme, funded mainly by advertising, and added a two page insert showing events and entrants at each individual meeting.
This was done for the Peter Stuyvesant Series in the seventies and the Peter Jackson Series in the nineties.
there's those who keep these and flicking through them gets them back too....
