OK the leash is loose and I am about to head north for my annual pilgrimage to Laguna Seca even if for just one day.
My friend Stu may find me some place to lay my head if I can't find my home.
Stu entered his magnificent 1951 Baldwin Special in the Pre-Reunion event last weekend.

When first going to the infield at Laguna Seca in 2017 there was this awesome display of "Racing through the Decades".

I was only at the track for one day so I will present what I took of what is an enjoyable time for me including meeting up with old friends and even making new friends. After waiting in traffic and bouncing along old army roads at Fort Ord to park the car it all became worthwhile when you come out to the front straight and hear and see a 1959 Lister Costin # 25 and a 1960 Chaparral # 66 etc. roar by, life seems pretty good.

The # 3 DeKon Monza is part of the stable of cars prepared by Chad Raynal and his team.

We had the Kiwi flag flying in our pits at Laguna Seca over the weekend with myself in the Lola, Michael Sexton in the Gemini and Neil Tolich in the Jocko with Allan Dunkley on the spanners. Great track to drive and the Lola and Gemini survived but unfortunately the Jocko did a camshaft in practice but spare parts arrived today from Auckland and the engine will be rebuilt by Thursday then we are all onto Lime Rock, Watkins Glen and Elkhart Lake.

I am sorry I did not get to meet you. It is getting to be a bit much to drive to and from Laguna in one day I will have to do better next year ! It was good to meet up with Bruce Thompson and Dave during the lunch break.
If his suitcase was big enough I think he wanted to take this 1964 Olds Cutlass back with him.

During the lunch break, Tom Kristensen a former Danish professional racing driver who holds the record for the most wins at the 24 Hours of Le Mans with nine, six of which were consecutive, came out to drive some demonstration laps in the 2005 Audi R 8 LMP.

I agree Bruce, that front air dam is absolutely not correct for 1967. Actually the splitter/ dam on the CSL is from a later era too.

I am not sure of the Caltex connection but it was the Mobil Oil logo back in 1951 such as John Cobb had on his Railton Special in 1947.

Its great to see another 1973 Capri RS2600. I assume this is an original car? There are several very good replicas, particularly in Europe. This is the exact same model as the one raced by Paul Fahey in NZ. If this is an original, it'll be a sister car to the one Fahey had.

Alain de Cadenet did a fascinating documentary a few years ago on the building of the D50 replicas, finishing off with him racing one of them at Goodwood Revival. Did they start the car when you were there Ken or was it static display only?

I did not see it started but sadly I was only at Laguna for the one day. I was so tired by the time I got home I wished I had found a way to stay overnight but the family comes first. It is about a 3 hour drive before race traffic one way. I had to stop a few times at the truck stops to get a boost to keep going home. Next year will be different.
Also back to the Capri, I thought by the vin number and the yellow windshield and that it was a J registered car, it would be 1971 year model. Would that be correct ?

p.s. Did Paul's Capri have the Westlake or Cosworth engine in it ?

I have seen a replica of one of these many years ago at a Constructors Car Club display in Wellington. It was stunning and one of the most beautiful cars I have ever seen.
To see a real one is one of those very special moments in ones life.

This is Bill Ockerlund's 91 Championship winning Camaro, It is loud and fast and won the last race of the event against some great competition. It has not been restored but is exactly as it left the track in '91.

This Deuce coupe was built by Ken Schmidt of Rolling Bones Hot Rod Shop, it is crazy cool and still had a lot of Bonneville salt on it, though much was washed off by the rain on the way to Laguna, it is now owned by Drew and that is the inimitable Tom McIntyre next to it.
That is Tom's # 47 Cobra behind the coupe, he also owns the '68 Penske Donohue Camaro.

Yes they did John, especially the Chris Cord cars, the # 20 car now owned by Ken Epsman was modified and prepared by Doane Spencer, one of the post war hot rodders who built some crazy cool and very fancy race cars.

Not only were there old Ford speedsters at Laguna Seca, there was also a display of more modern day Ford speedsters such as this 2016 Ford GT # 68 that had run well at Le Mans and Daytona.

My next Laguna Seca car has me puzzled at the moment, so I am hoping someone can provide a satisfactory answer.
I saw this (as written in the race programme) 1966 Ford GT 40 # 1. With a 7 litre engine. Chassis # GT/110-X1. Being an open roadster I thought that is a rare GT 40 and took these photos of it as it was being started and driven to the track for Group 7 A qualifying.

Then on Saturday August 26th I attended our local car show in Solvang, CA and there in the corner of the parking lot was this very same GT 40 Roadster. No one was paying much attention to it but it now had a display board showing the history and I was amazed to read it's story. If it is as claimed this would be one of the rarest GT 40s ever built. This was the chassis number that Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon plus Howden Ganley first developed before it was sent to Carrol Shelby for further development. After reading this I was hoping to dscuss it with the owner on how it was supposedly destroyed and now it is back together again. Please take a look at some of the photos and notes and any input is appreciated plus read the "Hemmings" article.

No Steve no connection, this GTX1 project has been around a while now. Howden Ganley mentioned it to me some time back. I understand its a very good replica attached to the reactivated GB rego . The McLaren Trust was asked for assistance early in the project , but our policy is not to involve ourselves in provenance issues.

You mention the word replica but this is at Laguna Seca, which states; "The intent of the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion from its very beginning is to celebrate motorsports history and the entered cars’ heritage. The spirit, history and intent of the car’s original constructor always takes precedence for the Governing Committee. This is why replicas, tribute or continuation cars are simply not allowed.*"

That is why I mentioned I was puzzled. (Whoops is this a slippery slope ?)

Ken don't believe every thing you read about Laguna. I paste a para graph from the GT40 site

If the two others roadsters that you mention are the two US cars currently being built up by a wealthy US 'gentleman' using X-1 and X-2 titles then I have to mention that these will simply be inaccurate replicas to put it politely.
I have a feeling that when Ronnie's book comes out that he will explain more on these cars as well as various other similar fake cars which seem to be built up by certain wealthy people in the hope of bamboozling (polite again!) everyone, so like everyone else, I am anxiously awaiting the publication date as I think it is likely to put the cat very much amongst the pigeons!

I was being polite! others do not beat around the bush.

Another car that brought back a memory was this beautiful 1970 Chevron B16 that had the name Graham Birrell on the side.
In 1973 Graham's brother, Gerry, had visited Trojan Works and sat down with us in the lunch cafeteria on the Tuesday and at a F2 race at Rouen in France the following weekend he had died when his Chevron B25 crashed during practice. It was a shock to all of us at the time.

No Steve no connection, this GTX1 project has been around a while now. Howden Ganley mentioned it to me some time back. I understand its a very good replica attached to the reactivated GB rego . The McLaren Trust was asked for assistance early in the project , but our policy is not to involve ourselves in provenance issues.

Oh the dangers of posting off the cuff. the G7A race car was Mk IV J Car chassis J10 the car was developed by Ford on chassis J9. J10 is now a coupe and Kerry Agapiou retained j9

I'm sure you're right Duncan. I was working off memory and got my cars mixed up. Here are some files Randy Hernandez sent me some time back from a folder his late father Fran had kept relating to Fords early foray into Can-Am, starting with their plans for 1967, while the later paperwork mentions big block FE power which I assume was for 1968/69. I think the car pictured became the G7A? But did it have a life before this?

I think it was Ken. He also designed the 1967 Ford Honker II Can-Am and (I think) the Shelby King Cobra Can-Am car, both of which were part of Fords ambitious Can-Am program that actually came to little.

I see on post #85 the Group 7 spec's, that it was a 427 "385 series" engine so this was the later big block and not the FE engine.

I always enjoyed these IMSA GTP cars back in the eighties, I don't keep up with it as much now. Al Holbert's cars were always immaculate. (When the race began !)

I will give you all a break as I will be away for a while including that Montana fishing trip that Bruce T talked me out of.
I am glad you did Bruce, as it is always a pleasure "hanging out" with you and Dave, even if you have to go off and leave me so YOU can eat YOUR lunch in the VIP lounge !

Ray, You have full paddock access for the duration, and the opportunities for great photos are endless. You can spend your entire time on the inside of the track, and you will have some fantastic track shots from a lot of vantage points. Worth every cent and every hour on the plane.

I just wander around with a little Nikon Coolpix S6500 camera and crop them to meet the TRS < 185 KB standards.

The Olds belongs to Dave Lipsky from Winecountry Motorsports.....a major supplier of racegear out of Sears Point raceway.
The cars was bought new by his father who was an Olds salesman I believe.

The example shown is a one of twenty reproductions of the 1939 Lagonda V12 racers that competed at the 1939 Le Mans race.
The twelve-cylinders produced over 150 horsepower which was sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual gearbox.

The original two 1939 LeMans team cars were badly damaged by a V1 'buzz bomb.' This car is a replica of those two cars and uses a body that was the first restoration of one of the team cars (plus a few other parts from it). This car has campaigned in many vintage races in Europe and the USA since the early 1970s.

49608Ray, try and do it, believe me it is a different place and you can get right beside the cars, meet the people, they real friendly and love to chat with Kiwis. Great photo opportunities all around the track, Pit area is bigger than the whole of Hampton track included and full of the most unbelievable cars. huge crowds, huge cars, huge transportors, Huge service utes/truck, huge food stalls, and huge atmoshere. We back this year and they have 2 full fields of F5000 for 50 year celebration. You been to Goodwood, you ain't been to La Guna, and also the car shows and auctions are unreal. See you there Ray, promise you not be disappointed. PS bring big hat as it gets warm, but they also have Beer Tents, so you be all good. (Ken might shout you a beer). Goodwood there next year, 90 odd F5000 and about 2000 other classics at La Guna this year.
