As I grew up going to races in NZ that had original versions of these All-Comers in the field it was great to see how they have been restored or later versions brought back to compete again thanks to dedication and hard work of the owners, drivers and tireless organizing and giving of their time, for example people such as John McKechnie and others.
The category limits cars to as they raced more than 15 years ago and provides racing for cars that are not quite fast enough to race with more modern racers and do not fit into other historic and classic classes.
I was away overseas during the 70s and 80s when these sports sedans were in their heyday so this class was so interesting for me to be around and my photos do not do them justice so any other inputs are appreciated.
The camaraderie and sharing of stories and tools was a joy to witness. I saw a group of drivers share a unit and laughing the night away and going out and battling hard on the track the next day..great stuff.
I wanted this thread to be used by all and keep updated long after the Historic Taupo thread has faded away.
I am not an expert on the rules and regulations so please enter what is necessary.
I think these modified cars are unique just to NZ ?

Perhaps the most legendary All-Comer was the 1967 NZ Saloon Car Champion Robbie Francevic's 1955 Ford Customline "Custaxie" that has been revived as Custaxie 2 by Robert Bartley of Wanganui. Paul Tulloch drove the carr at Taupo and kept us entertained all weekend as he threw the Custaxie around.

Legendary engine man, Ray Stone, came by to explain the unique exhaust system, which started out because there was not enough time to build a tuned length exhaust system and because it ran so well they left it as it was. This also meant Ray had to take out a section of his shop roof to let the exhaust do it's thing while on the dyno !

Smooth chin man next to Craig is John Marslin. he owned it for many years and ran it at our Festivals also at some annual street races. John also ran his XU1 at the Hamilton Classic street races back in the early 1990s.
The Distinguished gentleman with the white beard is John Climo.
He built the Zephyr Corvette 2 up for Rod Coppins to race in 1983.
You could say he started this historic saloon car movement.
He was impressed with the following this had .....and the fact the Mk 2 was still going.

I had the wonderful privilege of being driven to Taupo with John McKechnie and Bruce Thompson. Bruce was also the driver on the track in John's 1973 Ford Falcon XA Coupe # 83. I was not much help, running off with friends and family or taking photos but it was great to see them in action along with the invaluable help of Paul Berkahn. (Paul B)

As I mentioned we were all mates staying in the same building and relaxing at night and then during the day "the gloves came off" and they were all competing on the track.

An gentleman from Queensland waylaid me asking me if it was the real Monaro that was recently featured in the Queensland Monaro Car Club mag.
Apparently in Aus the real, original cars dont race, they sit in museums or have track to themselves.
Explained to them, yes , this card did race against Terry Allens Camaro in 1970 , that the grid ahead had quite a number that dated from last century also.,and we were all here to race which is what racing cars do.

That Alvis " Elegant British Automobile " amongst some real hybrids - and i see the Studebaker in a 1960's Hawk, was expecting a 1930's Coupe -had a Dinky model of a Studebaker that I found, was missing the base plate but still had the wheels, so got new Tyres from Martin's Toys and Hobbies in Custom Street,Auckland, near where my Dad worked in the early 1960's - when I got the tyres, either for this car or another Dad was not happy as they charged me for one tyre what was supposed to be for the set of four, a big hole in my pocket money !!. The Studebaker sadly has gone, Only three old Dinky's left.. it does include a Cunningham released in 1955 -purchased from a Hobby fare, a 1930's Army car - found in a garden and a Cooper Bristol, found in a road gutter in Hamilton.

Rhys, BTW the tyres were new,bought from a Model Shop in Birkenhead, in around 2003 sadly now gone !! if it is George 's it has shrunk to 1'43 approx..

At Taupo people were asking me about the differences in classes
HSC- modified cars with standard bodies and same manufacturer factory components
HSS- modified bodies and different manufacturer components
The Allcomer era, 1960 to 1967 and only the type of cars seen on our circuit in NZ thru that period.
Mechanical components should be only those available during those dates.
Also those like the Custaxie 2, Coppin's Zephyr Corvette, Morrari replicas there can only be 1 car.
The real cars that exist can not be replicated.
Heaps of room for an Uncle Jack Anglia ,A40 Farina and a Marwood Jaguar powered H80...
There were plenty of V8 Coupes then to chose a suitable replica now- Robin Tanner, Rod Coppins, John Riley-later George Bunce, Nazer etc
No championship, series or need to upgrade or modify the cars.

On a positive note you would not need a hoist to replace what remains of the rear end or do a complete brake job etc.. !

Bugger says Ken, before the definition of a saloon was that it had a roof - it was the Allcomer rule . there was a description that went as follows.

" Open roof does not a Sports Car make, nor Wind up windows a Saloon "

Then in the same vein, my Dad talked about cars with " Carbolic Brakes and a Sunstroke Roof " and they were modified with
" Twin Overhead Dipsticks and a Full Race Sump Gasket " .:cool:

Geez John I thought you would agree with me on this 1960 field at Ardmore as having Allcomers. Did they not start in 1960 as you stated and this has 1937 Chevrolets, 1934 Ford V-8, John Riley and Red Dawson etc.and a NZ built beautiful de Joux # 20.

I note the 1962 NZGP and 1964 NZGP programmes do not mention Allcomers just Open Saloon Car Races.
The 1969 NZGP programme has an Open Race for Saloon cars " Unlimited Capacity_ Allcomers Included"

perhaps I need reminding of what exactly is an Allcomer and when that term was first used in NZ programmes ?

The New Zealand Saloon Car Championship was first staged in 1960. It was won by Harold Heasley, driving a Humber 80.
From 1960-1967 it was mostly devoid of actual rules
Later the New Zealand Saloon Car Championship was held under "allcomer' regulations
1967 was the last year,in 1968 production based FIA Group 5 came in...no arguing with what is in your program.

Growing up in the UK in the 1950's, the addition of any saloon cars to any grid wasn't normal - even in Formula Libre, until the latter part of the decade. All race programmes initially, probably from the Brookland's days, had races for single seaters and sports cars - usually by capacity. In those days, you drooled over any car in the programme, as it was a rarity to see any on the streets - and when you did, it was a head turning moment.

There is a logical comment to add here, but I won't.

Formula Libre for us, was when Chris Summers was able to run the Cooper Chevrolet (usually the only single seater over about 3,000cc) as there were no other stand alone classes with big banger single seaters or larger engined sports cars.

When Mini's hit the race tracks very soon after their launch, we had a spate of fairly standard or lightly modified saloons (called touring cars), Riley 1.5's, Borgward, Jaguars, Zephyrs etc., until the super saloons (Jag powered Anglia, V8 A40's and Cortinas etc) hit the tracks, along with space frame Minis. At that point I suppose we had 'open saloons'.

We also had by the end of the 1950's, small GT's - mainly Lotus Elites, often mixed with sports cars then in the early 1960's, bigger GT's, such as Jaguar E Types, Ferraris and Aston Martins. Still the sort of machinery to drool over and relatively rare on the public roads.

Presumably, NZ followed a similar path, but may well have been racing saloons earlier?

So , who is going to be the person with the early NZ motoring mags from 1960 to 1965 that can first find the use of the word allcomer to actually refer to our subject?
Not to be confused with Open Saloon Cars or Unlimited CC.
Dont think that simply running a standard Coupe would make it allcomers though.
For me it would have to be something radical...fastback, fastfront, Lotus in Anglia not a Cortina, V8 in a Minor, SBC in a 30s Coupe , Dawsons Willys Coupe, they were originally a 4 cylinder, Jag in Humber.......any takers here ?

It would be great to learn how this came about as there is a gradual acceptance, then 1965/66 things changed.
I dont have any real history on this.
Sounds like I may have to see my Uncle Jack again.

Pretty sure the word "All-Comers" was used by track promoters way back to allow non-compliant race cars into grids were others had to conform?(NASCAR) sort of a bullshit word or excuse..............usually these cars were owned by the promoters with paid drivers to dice the field up believing they had some sort of perceive advantage.......interesting.

Yes, it was just a pity that the north island sector did not follow the south & form O.S.C.A. so a lot of the outlawed car's could keep racing instead of being locked in shed's or dismantled, Hindsight I guess.

Interesting that by 1966 the majority of the Anglia’s are all running 1500 plus pre Crossflow engines. One is Zephyr powered.

This programme John is for February 1966....not 68.
Kevin’s A90 might have been the early version and not the 3 litre later car. Running 3 Litre. Cool cars.

My point exactly, , so why was there this segregation in 1966, in 67 I could see the reason.

Historic Saloons-
The 1966 season saw two separate championships take place alongside one-another. With the Allcomers being the headline act, MSNZ introduced a second championship, for FIA Group 2 touring cars. Group 2 regulations were already in wide-spread use throughout the world, and used for the British Saloon Car Championship, European Touring Car Championship, numerous European national championships, and were also used as the basis for the Improved Production regulations used in the Australian Touring Car Championship. Furthermore, the Sports Car Club of America established a new sedan racing championship in 1966 which it called the Trans-American Sedan Championship, or Trans-Am, for short. The SCCA used FIA Group 2 regulations for the Trans-Am.

The Aussies were racing their "Humpties" ,Ray
Only Aussie car here was Graeme Harveys "Golden Holden", also a Humpty.
Falcons were not seen as racing then, EH-S2, HD-X2, HR-X2 were raced over there, but not here
Some standard model Holdens were in B&H
Carlos Neate won in a Nissan Skyline GT here though
Really no Aussies till 1968- after Allcomers- Grady Thomson winning the Heatway Rally, then Glenvale 100

Interesting just how many cars then, were of British origin. No Australian cars - though maybe some were built there?

Ken, thanks for that,went to the meeting had the programme, Feb 66. Interesting that Coppins was in the Zephyr Corvette,yet a bit later in 1966 Ken Bailey drove it,the May meeting,was a small affair as a combined Motorcycle and Car meeting, after the debacle of the ACC Reverse track meeting in April .. and may I borrow the pics and put on the NSCC thread ?? - have done so already.

The Race is for 1601 cc and over all the non-eligible are the sub 1600 cars which presumably had their own race earlier !!
Tom Grace there in his Cortina - the Man from Woodhill who was a huge supporter and a stalwart of the Club in the late 60's onwards.

Yes A lap to get going a middle lap and then hammer down to the finish ; John on the old " Full Circuit " 2.2 miles which of course was the only one then, the 1.75 mile version and related club circuit were not done until 1967.:cool:

When I first started going there it was always full circuit.
And I was there the day in 1970 my Monaro equaled the outright lap record on the full circuit.
As overheating seemed to be an issue for these cars..looking at Morrari ...then maybe 3 laps of 2.2 miles was suitable
What we have now at Puke is not interesting to me

The Aussies were racing their "Humpties" ,Ray
Only Aussie car here was Graeme Harveys "Golden Holden", also a Humpty.
Falcons were not seen as racing then, EH-S2, HD-X2, HR-X2 were raced over there, but not here
Some standard model Holdens were in B&H
Carlos Neate won in a Nissan Skyline GT here though
Really no Aussies till 1968- after Allcomers- Grady Thomson winning the Heatway Rally, then Glenvale 100

Just some small corrections John,the Old Holdens were known as Humpies not Humpties. The EH model you are thinking of was S4 not S2. You are correct with HD-X2, and the HR was 186S not X2. Sorry to be so pedantic. Hope this helps.

That would not be enough money to pay for the fuel for 3 laps !
They must have provided good "spirits" to all entrants after the racing was over.

Dave Simpson copied, but Jack didnt race in 66
Simpson and Fahey both appeared Nov 65
At the same time Custaxie was being created.
Allcomer racing had become so popular, and was being the main draw card.
Renwick was the first on the SI calendar , and the prize money was bigger than ever before.

Rhys...good question as Fahey Mustang also had stripe on the side, thick in the middle, thinner stripes above and below. Being a Shelby meant it has a scoop in the bonnet at that time..104

An Allcomer / Open Saloon modification.
This early Terry Marshall photo which includes his brother, shows Spinner Black's Mk 1 Zephyr at an engineering shop in Tatuanui, east of Morrinsville, getting the rear fenders cut out to allow for the wider tyres. Some good Kiwi ingenuity in very basic conditions.

Chris G , spannerman for Fat City let me copy pictures from his album.
Goes back quite a way, and shows how the car evolve.
This is the Falcon Coupe that Jim Richard first raced at Manfeild in the mid 70s.
It is a genuine RPO83, making it a very rare car.
Craig Pullman owned for a while , then sold it to Phil Schubert.
Also featured is Craigs next car- XBGT, black without the Darth Vader trim from early 90s.
I will not give dates, class run in but people will know the track.
Ken has posted these and John Popes Falcon Coupe, Paul Torclers because we never tire of seeing these old car pix.
White/ Blue Torana was Allan Fergusons, later owned by Glen Ellingham

From John Pope on last pic where there are 4 Coupes-
". Heres a photo taken around the same time and on the old Taupo track sweeper, 4 falcon coupes Phils is just coming into shot from the right.
It was the last lap of a a reverse grid I overtook Alan under brakes and squeezed between Vern and the other coupe to take the win."

The red Coupe could be the Falcon Engineering Coupe from Hobsonville, it had a large sticker on the rear quarter with the bird and company name.-Steve Woodward
However ,there is another red XA Coupe- Kevin Allely, John says the KA bought his motor when he was stripping it to sell, so this may not be him

Paul Torklers red Coupe is number 45.

John Popes genuine Cobra #121 is towing his XAGT Coupe

Yellow XAGT is Darryl Lucas who has said he would like to run with us at MG Manfeild in November.

So here is how 81 has evolved externally for racing over the years, and also ,as can be seen from the surrounding cars, The Coupe has raced with all manner of modern machinery, it has won a lot of titles, the one that sticks in my memory was the Rod Coppins Memorial trophy for 1993 at Baypark as I was running in this also.
2nd to last pic shows the previous cobra rear spoiler and front splitter
last pic shows the newer rear wing and the front splitter ....these can now be seen on my Blue Coupe.
Rear wing is the same as on Craig Pullmans car and both were made by Barry Algie in early 90s.
They were copied from Kevin Waldocks Bathurst entry Falcon...pix to follow...when car was being made at ProAction.

I was chasing Veen hard riding his bumper and he had a half spin in which we nearly collided, avoiding hitting him resulted in me spinning.

Top set- Addis, Willis and Meadows.
Early days for Phil at the clothes line at Taupo.

The team running Fat Cty...Phil Schubert- in racing suit- and Chris Ganley in the sunnies.
These 2 have been together with the car right from the start.
Neat to see successful combinations like this...other long term combos are Roger Davis and Vern Muller. Their spannermen have been there from the beginning.Makes so much difference with reliable, consistent help. Lot of people have dropped out because its too much for one person.
Next pic show current rear wing and front splitter.
Still a straight bodied genuine RPO83.
Last 2 pix are the Waldock/Peters Falcons done for Bathurst at ProAction
Barry Algie in 1993 was copying the rear wing and legs-with some modifications to follow the Coupes rear quarter line- to make the same for Craig and Phils cars.
Has the Gurney lip at the top back.

I could be wrong but I was sure the Findlay Mustang was one of the ex-Anderson Pinepac Group A cars? I vaguely recall it was still yellow inside.

At least one and possibly both the Pinepac Mustangs are now in France.

These are the earliest Bay Park photos I have. I’m pretty sure it’s 1987

1. Phil me Vern and Veen making news headlines.
2. Pic wth Phils car on the trailer has my white Cobra beside. Phil Rudd Commodore (the one I later brought) just in view on the right.
Incidentally Phils XC tow-car was a beast with big block engine and I recall he said he had a siren and hidden flashing lights behind the grille so he could clear any slow traffic out of his way.
3. Ross Moir working on my car between races.
4. I think was a reverse grid race chasing down Chudleigh. Cris Maxwell 240Z and Keith Rennie or is it Simon Halliday white XU1 side by side

Quite good that my car evolved as it makes it easer to keep the photos in order just a bugger I didn’t write down a few more dates.
Pretty sure the first two years I didn’t have a log book or sometimes it wasn’t filled in.
Have lots of XC 89-92 photos of my Falcon at a few different tracks and will send some when I get around to it.
The accident in my Cobra at Whenuapai was in 1992 so had done a couple of seasons with XC front on by then.

Extremely pleased to add Roger Williams Monza to our grid.
This car has genuine documented history going back to 1976 as the Red Roof Inns Monza
Red Dawsons, Art McKees Monzas,Allan Moffats have all left NZ.,so we are so lucky to have this join us so we can remember how glorious they were.
OK..... all I will probably see of him is a brief view in my mirrors and slightly longer seeing him accelerate away.

This car is representative of Schedule E..the period after the BNSW series.This allowed engine set backs, boxed guards etc. Other well known cars of this era -Nazer Victor, Sidchrome Mustang.Our rules allow these cars to race .

Speaking of beyond 2018, I have booked for the Easter Air Show at Omaka. http://www.classicfighters.co.nz/ and am wondering if these cars are running anywhere before or after Easter?

With all the sad and bad news over here with fires, shootings and earthquake predictions etc. It was so uplifting to hear of the successful launch of the NZ rocket from Mahia and topped off by hearing that Manfield was such a very good event at the weekend.
So on my behalf thank you to all involved.

Hi Ken, thanks for posting the Monaro pics, brought back some great memories of Bay Park and Levin. Hope you are well out of harms way where you are located in California! Can't believe all these disasters, I'm still repairing damage from Hurricane Florence here in North Carolina but got off lightly compared to most of the neighbors. I had to withdraw from the recent annual Gold Cup meeting at Virginia International Raceway, Florence struck a week prior to the event. The A40 wasn't caught in the flood waters thankfully but I had to concentrate on fixing the house instead of racing.

Grant..Peter Bennetts came up to me and gave me his business car. it had a red A40 Farina with a droop snoot, recognised it immediately and said that he had sold it to Grant Ellwood in USA.
He smiled and said that he misses it.
Talking about great memories of Levin- Peter told me he raced against Grady in the Monaro and other cars in his A40 many times.

Hi John - in my teens I saw Peter racing the A40 at Levin, spectacular! We hope to run a few iconic events in USA - Watkins Glen, Laguna Seca and Sonoma if the hurricanes take a break for a year or two. Eventually the AA40 will return to NZ I hope with an interesting log book.

The Peter Bennett A40 is included in a book I recently finished writing about historic NZ racing cars. It has a cool history. I spent half a day at Peter's house earlier this year and he chatted about the car and unearthed a bunch of cool old photos.
