Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Formula 5000, the iconic stock-block V8 single-seater category here, across the Tasman and in the United States.

Kennys Bucket list is being looked after, he is going out a a passenger in the Team Cambridge Monaro.
He first saw it in 1969, and now is going around Taupo in it 2019.
Thats what a bucket list is.
We wont discuss here the bucket not being attended to last year

We have 24 cars for HMC and HSC, Bruce can put up the list but we have some pretty cool cars coming. Several of our races will be split grid between HMC and HSC along with the fastest half and slowest half, its always good trial different ideas and this event allows for that. Along with our past Legends the HMC/HSC camp will be selling T-Shirts, Calendars and other items. Looking forward to a FUN weekend.

We're still missing a few HMC cars which should have made the effort but it is what it is and we'll have a bunch of fun anyway which to me is most important. After 7 years of helping Tony, Chris and Jim run the Festivals at Hampton and bringing the Aussie ATA guys over four times(never easy) im looking forward to a more relaxed low key event like this.

Yep, currently 30.8 in the shade where I am. I think it's supposed to be about 27 in Taupo on Saturday & Sunday which probably means 30 or so at the track.:cool:

Wet the underwear-cold water- or put them in the freezer........its a cool start.

Wetting not recommended John. Suits are flameproof - not fireproof and not really heat proof. In a fire, you'd probably get scalded through the heat transfer. Which is why we always recommended you dried your suit between races.

For the same reason, you shouldn't really wear a watch with a metal strap. Having said that, the risk of fire is relatively slim, based on the number of races most of us have attended over the years, despite the new rules with underwear and balaclavas etc. But, it is still a risk, no matter how small that risk is - but then so is being hit in the face by a wayward bird when driving a single seater.

I am about to head out through the Waikato and Bay of Plenty on the way to Auckland after a most enjoyable 3 days at Taupo.
Thanks to so many of you, especially John, Bruce, Chad, Angus nd Rowan for putting up with me ( especially in confined sleeping quarters ! )
Meeting up with old school friends, relatives, chatting with racing legends and Mr. Holmes was like magic to me.( Bucket list material )
Plus wonderful racing..great stuff. Thanks to all and soon I will be heading back to winter but my batteries have been fully recharged.

The Demos proved to be a real hit for HSSC fans and entertaining for the spectators

I gave the Team Cambridge Monaro to Rowan Harman..aussiemonza on TRS ...he did 2 X 10 lap sessions with Ken Hydman..after 50 years he finally got his just desserts.
Rowan had been the custodian of the Monaros Moon manifold and 4 X 48IDA Webers for many years, so this was just reward for him....also convinced him that there was NO way he could buy them back off me.
Bruce took his buddy Chad out as well in Blue at the same time and all of a sudden it was like Coppins and Moffat in some very stylish overtaking and cornering

Bruce took his 2 daughters out in Blue, we also took Scott and Grant Hawkins-our greatest fans- for a coordinated close passing sessions in the 2 cars.

Also took some of the Taupo flaggies for 3 lap sprints for some excitement as they gave us so much of their time in supporting race day. I had to keep reminding my passengers that we as we were Historics we were actually supposed to slide through the corners

Graham Barnes son Shane also took the old mans Capri for a tankfull of fun.

I was geared up to give Spinner Black some laps in his old Monaro,, but unfortunately he didnt make it

Biggest smile of the day came from Jon Telford, Roger Davis and myself after finally getting Jen Mossman to get behind the wheel of the Mazda RX8 that was built originally just for her. She went out on the track, last seen beating Roger Williams lap record..still hasnt come in yet so we are going to send out the search parties.

Thanks BMMP for scheduling spare time between races for family and friends to enjoy the cars at pace on the track

Monaro and Blue probably did a full season of racing with demos and I think I know Taupo track better.

Extra special big thank you to Angus Fogg who was worked mercilessly for 3 days fixing all manner of car ailments, such as -hub seals on Starlets,test driving Marinas, getting new driveshaft for Blue Friday night at Vegas and checking the water on the Monaro.

Hard Workers Award would have to go to Paul B....after working tirelessly in the HMC/HSC marquee, he finally emerged for his Demo, and the cars had been packed away...next time buddy.

HMC/HSC had one of the best race events we have ever had. Great racing by our Racers, no damage apart from breakages, and a very happy team of helpers.

Jen Mossman got some track time in her Chev powered Mazda RX 7. This car was built for Jen a few years back and started with a 327 small block. Now owned by John Telford who kindly offered Jen the drive.
Jen is the only female, or one of the very few to break 60 seconds in a saloon car at Bay Park.

The car was built it maybe 1991 Its a tube chassis built by her ex husband Greg. They brought the Grant Brennans RX7 and dumped most of it but kept the IMSA body kit. Jennifer had the ex Brett Willis commodore for a few season prior, so they stripped it out and used the mechanicals in the Mazda.
The best bits the engine. ( the bones of it now in the Graeme Park Marina). its a Fisher 310 cube, and powered the 1982 US Transam championship winning DeAtley Camaro, ( with drivers Willie T Ribbs, and David Hobbs)

Got this from Grimmie, is this related ?-The car in 1984 won the trans Am series with David Hobbs driving it and later by Billy T Ribbs. It was car 28 of a 2 car team owned by Portland Industrialist De Atley and sponsored by Budweiser.

Yes John, we had some fun with that one as I was talking to Ken about that if he felt as crook as he did at Laguna Seca that I could be his back up at Taupo because they wouldn't have had to adjust the seat or belts much and just blank off the Smith bit ! I would probably have stalled it and the real Kenny would have been blamed ! ;)

Hyndman was a bit nervous before taking his very FIRST ride in a competition car. The Cambridge Monaro. (Always watched from the sidelines.)

Lame excuse from a Motor Trimmer I know, but currently you can only see this from the passenger seat....a place I dont visit.
And I wont say- Factory finish .
My Boss Andy stickers I thought looked better on Blues rear wing , than on the front wing.

No John, I did not get to go out with Adrian Dobbe in the 1969 Vauxhall ViVa # 40 ( the Little Gray Mouse )as I was too busy changing my underwear after the ride in the Monaro !

Jim was going off to see the Lotus 18 that he drove at the 1961 Horohora Hillclimb to set the best time ever and he said that beat Bruce McLaren's record for that hillclimb which I did not realize before.

The Inaugural ANZUS IMSA Monza Conference was also held at Taupo with Guest Speaker Chad Raynal, Angus Fogg, Roger Williamson and yours truly forming the core group. More hospitality on the Monday following with visits to Angus Fogg, Wayne Anderson and Tony Antonievich workshops. I will get to posting some images after a hectic week at Bathurst. Thanks again to all, fantastic!!!

I feel very privileged to have had to opportunity to see some of these cars race back in their heyday and then to see them so beautifully restored and prepared to race here again at meetings like this many years later. The camaraderie and support amongst you all was very impressive.
I have to admit I have a soft spot for Dale Mathers 1969 302 Boss Mustang which is so well presented and it reminds me of the events I went to in Australia in 1970 and watched Allan Moffat throw his Boss Mustang # 9 around.
Well done everyone I thoroughly enjoyed my 3 days with you.

I do have to admit that I was disappointed in the size of the general public at an event such as this, that has such great racing with little damage done to these historic treasures. As this last photo shows hardly anyone around apart from the participants plus their friends and families etc.
As Fred Dagg used to sing "You don't know how lucky you are."

A part of me has not come all the way back from my time at Taupo. Today I found some camera photos that had been hidden away and although it has been 5 weeks since the event I still wanted to share these pix of my guest ride in John McKechnie's 1969 "Cambridge" Monaro with Australian Rowan Harman driving. Rowan is the promoter of the Australian Touring Car Masters series and thoroughly enjoyed his time in NZ before heading back for the Bathurst Meet.

Monaro just got through this event with careful watching of the water level.
High temperature was caused by a cracked block in one cylinder.
Low compression engine was pumping water out, at least was not getting in.
Discovered this 2 days before Taupo, did not want to park it as there were some
major committments-
Had Rowan coming over to drive his old Moon manifold and Webers,also couldnt disappoint Ken, also Scott, Grant ,flaggies.....
Most important though was to have it running in the first ever Historic Saloon Car race..which it did.
So its off to Uncle Jims to have a sleeve fitted, rest of the motor is fine, reassemble and ready for Legends.
And no, a replacement Dart block was never considered...its 010 blocks for the Monaro.

Good on you John for doing it right. Be much easier to buy a new Dart block off the shelf, but it just wouldn't be right. Have you managed to find a replacement 010 block?

Thanks Ken, for some reason I missed this posting of yours...…however I do appreciate your kind words. I've always been a 69 Muz fan since the days when I saw the Moff stang and Jims siddy both at Bay Park and I also remember the 70 PDL in lace green paint work, quite radical in its day.

I actually agree with you Ken, "WE don't know how lucky we are" but these days there's never a sizable crowd at motor racing, well certainly not enough to pay for anything that's for sure...………..mind you I've been to Monterey a few times to find im the only one in the grandstand as well.

At Rebel Roundup , Pukekohe today, there was a large crowd, people in the stands were standing and cheering as the 10 Historic Sports Sedans entertained them in 2 X 30 minute sessions.

OK, last year Adrian and friends attended as a wild card.
Organizers liked us so much they wanted us back doing the same....display, run, noisey V8s, passenger rides.
This event combines many thing of which we were only a minor part....
Hot Rods...Sports Sedans are hot rods., never homologated or mainstream
Pukekohe....Auckland home of motor racing, and strong seat of hot rodding. My Monaro lived out here,
Hot Rod event like this is perfect for us.
As Spagetti said...a great event which pulls the punters in.

There was a display time when the attendees could walk around the HSS cars and a selection of the Hot Rods on the front straight.
It was good talking with people who love all things automotive, and from the people I spoke to they loved seeing the cars on the track, making noise and a spectacle.

Yes I agree. Hot rod and classic car shows tend to attract good size crowds - you only have to go to the Whangamata Beach Hop to see that. From a spectator viewpoint it would be great to have, at the next Rebel Roundup, more HMC and Sports Sedans plus some classic racing motorcycles limited to say 350cc and 500cc. Classic British bikes, Nortons, Matchless, AJS, BSA, Triumph etc also have quite a large following. So the theory is, that if you provide a quality hot rod display coupled with some classic car and bike racing, the crowds will come, and maybe some will get to enjoy this class of racing for the first time and get hooked. I wouldn't mind betting that heaps of potential fans don't know anything about classic motor racing. Just a thought.

Agree with Nigel, Some Historic motorsport events need to cover a broader automotive interest level, plus event location for ease of spectators attendance, which, in turn will potentially grow Historic motorsport interest.
Separate grouped displays of cars such as, Schedule K, FIA, T&C, etc.
Classic Bikes are a great idea.

At most of our race meets that we attend, HMC/HSC, we always get one or two enquires from the spectators.
Taupo HGP was no different and we had a couple of serious inquires and both will eventually be seen on the grid.
I am working with one of those inquires at the moment on car regulation etc and it is progressing as we speak.
Not all race events have the facilities for car shows etc but the Rebel Round Up is an ideal event for this type of display as it is not a race meeting so it lends itself to display and promote.

Leadfoot also is a good example of this type of event, variety and it attracts a huge crowd.

Great to see Craig in the Zephyr MK2 with stacks through the bonnet...Rod Coppins drove this at Ardmore, Jim Richards drove it at the Wellington street race. Tony Antonievich brought out the Custom Card Camaro for a fun run so did Jamie Bennenbroek- Torana XU1 V8, Ron Findlay ex Graeme Clarke Capri V8, Roger Davis-Torana SLR5000 and Graeme Park.Marian Coupe V8
Also big rap for Adrian Dobbe , Club Captain for running our end,having the HSSC popup there and our souvenir T-shirts and hats available to the public....and running his Viva Torana XU1
Never felt like a race day, different atmosphere...laid back fun club day..

So instead of promoting and having a "race meeting", why not just call it a practice day or something similar. I don't think the punters would be overly concerned if the cars weren't actually racing each other as long as they were going fast and making a lot of noise.

It depends on what they are trying to do Nigel. Even a sprint meeting is run under a basic clubsport licence and is limited on laps and cars on the grid.
It still require all the safety ie Ambulance and flag Marshall’s etc plus a CotC. It’s not so simple unfortunately.

Exactly right Dale, it was not racing but a mobile display of cars. We were under strict instructions to keep everything subdued and appropriate for a demonstration.

Interesting Bruce T...……..and this would be because someone has to take responsibility should an accident occur hence your strict instructions and since this event didn't come under a MSNZ permit it would not be covered under the MSNZ insurance package.

In todays PC world this is what most don't understand but the likes of myself and Bruce soon found out running our groups...……….18 months back I was about to shut HMC down because I found out I was personally liable for everyone's actions "on" and "off" the track, I even asked those racing in our group for funding so I could buy insurance and no one wanted to pay(figures) so who the hell needs that when its just a hobby. We ran at Winged Thunder 9 on Sunday at Harrisville Speedway ( right next to Ohakea Air Force Base ), an outlaw meeting for Sprintcars, midgets, Minisprints, and modifieds. It's an outlaw event in the true sense of the word - the bloke built himself a speedway oval in his paddock, and runs it his way. No Speedway NZ rules / limitations / fees and charges / no scrutineering, it's about personal responsibility, and he ENCOURAGES us to run open headers - the biggest trophy for the weekend is for the first Sprintcar across the line with open headers ( we claimed that one :cool: ). Start time - what else but High Noon. Best weekend I've had for a long time, probably helps that we cleaned up at Palmerston North Speedway the night before with both cars too.....

2 more meetings at Western Springs speedway this season - Saturday 2nd March ( final round of the Rolling Thunder Series ), and final night 16 March with bonus demo derby and fireworks. Pits open to the public all night ( no open footwear ), posters for the kids ( young and old ;) ) racing starts at 6pm with non stop action until 10:30. We'll be there looking to finish the season off with some good results.

Andrew, Unless he has his own personal insurance he's taking a hell-off a risk. Just because his track is privately owned and on private property doesn't mean he's immune from responsibility or liability. He may think hes OK and all good, but wait until someone gets injured or at worst killed then he'll find out because once government departments step in look out.....

Personally I admire a guy like this, prepared to have a go but the system is against him and only getting worst. The problem I had was I didn't have the affordability for Lawyer protection, etc to protect myself from a long draw out legal battle(at worst case), but maybe he's wealthy enough not to care? Dale M

Just because his track is privately owned and on private property doesn't mean he's immune from responsibility or liability. He may think hes OK and all good, but wait until someone gets injured or at worst killed then he'll find out because once government departments step in look out.....

Personally I admire a guy like this, prepared to have a go but the system is against him and only getting worst. The problem I had was I didn't have the affordability for Lawyer protection, etc to protect myself from a long draw out legal battle(at worst case), but maybe he's wealthy enough not to care? Dale M

Just maybe he knows what he is doing, has received legal advice and is not buying into the hyped up stuff allowing self appointed regulators to make money from amateurs having fun.

The guy is a pretty sharp operator, I'm sure he's all over that stuff. The way he has the whole place set up is wonderful, there's a saloon ( fully licensed ), nice fencing, hay bales to sit on etc. He also does functions and weddings etc at the place. It's a decent set-up, better ( and run better ) than some "professional" outfits………..
