Folks, I'm really pleased to have been given the green light to write a book on the history of the Wellington Street Race. The event was first staged in 1985, with the last running in 1996. There were two races in 1987, and none in 1995.

The book will be a blow-by-blow account of each race, which a chapter dedicated to each.

I was wondering if anyone on here has old programmes and magazine reports from any of the races that I could use as part of my research?

I'm also wanting photos from any of the years the event took place.

The book will cover the main race/races, not the supports. It won't cover the Pukekohe event that followed either.

Steve looking forward to the book- interested though in this comment -
" The book will cover the main race/races, not the supports. "
There has been some video footage of the support race particularly the Sports Cars at one or two of the events.

Good luck with it all, I never went but remember them and the first one, 1985, a Young Guy working for me in Howick, went and we heard a lot about it afterwards..

Cheers

I hope you get to the bottom of who actually won, rather than the declared winner in 1985...

There was some controversy about the result - which has never really been put to rest - and I remember so well watching it on TV and expressing some surprise.

Great TV though and like so many street races, probably the best place to watch was in fact on TV.

Steve, you’ve motivated me to rifle through the box of stuff that my club got from Nissan NZ a few years back when they were getting rid of, well, stuff.

So amongst other things (like framed photos of B&H 500 class winners) are the following that might be of help (bear in mind that not everything has a year on it so I did some internet free deducing to figure out the year):

Programmes for:
29/11 - 02/12/1990
01 – 03/12/1989
26/10/1987
25/01/198

Media Clippings books for:
1991
1990

Block mounted posters:
01 – 03/12/1989
22 – 24/10/1989

A different sort of block mounted posters:
02/12/1990

Heaps of photos from the 1990 event (ideal for those who like Sentras)

A Nissan Mobil 500 flag

The Dominion pre-race souvenir guide: 22 – 24/10/1988

Corporate Profile sheets: 1994

Is any of this of use to you?

Also, you probably already know of: https://www.facebook.com/wellingtonstreetrace/

Hi guys, thanks for all the encouragement. I'm really excited about this project. Was lying awake one night unable to sleep when it hit me; someone needs to do a book on the Wellington Street Race. I attended every event except 1985, plus the 1992 and 1993 events when I was living in the UK.

Thanks Roger. By that I mean, there was a single main race for each year up until 1994 when it became multiple sprint races, which then continued for the final event in 1996.

Wow Alan, I would absolutely love to be able to use those! Thanks so much. I'm hoping to include a cover shot and entry shot for event event. This would really give it a huge kick start. Thanks again.

Can anyone help with race reports from any of the events beginning with the 1987 event? Motoring News did a good job of event coverage. When did this magazine discontinue?

Steve, did you know there was a book put out by Wayne Munro that covered the first two races?

There is also a video that covered the 1989 race. It's called Monaco, Monza, Macao ... Wellington.

Thanks Milan, no, I wasn't aware of this book. I have most of the early programmes (except 1985) and Wayne Munro writes detailed articles throughout.

Today I was unpacking another box of stuff from my storage unit and I found a 64-page Supplement from the NZ Sunday Times that previewed the 1987 Nissan Mobil Series. Also in the box was a 36-page Supplement from The Dominion on the 1986 Series.

This is the contents list from the Sunday Times.

Have just received from BMC BOY the " Official Programme " for the Benson and Hedges Saloon Car Classic at Pukekohe
17th November 1985, with details of results from the previous Rounds at Manfield 20 October 1985 and Baypark 27 October 1985.
It is interesting as a mate, John Trigance whom I only met in the 1990's was running a Toyota Corolla GT from the Toyota Dealership in Pukekohe that he was an owner of.
The only overseas driver was Dick Johnson driving with Neville Crichton in a Ford Mustang GT,unlike the Nissan Mobil Race where there were many overseas [ mainly Australian ] drivers

Interesting is the second " Official Programme " from the New Zealand Grand Prix 1986 which has an Advert / Promotion for the Nissan Mobil 500 series. quote from the Ad ;

Nissan Mobil 500
Wellington Street Race - Sunday, 26th January, 1986
Pukekohe - Sunday,2nd February,1986

Prices of tickets are :
- Ground Admission $10.00 [ both races ]
Grandstands $25.00 ( includes ground admission Wellington )
Pukekohe Members' Grandstand - Top Deck $20.00
- Lower Deck $10.00
Start/Finish Stand $5.00

The add finishes with

NISSAN MOBIL 500 - BOOK NOW

Will scan the Programme covers and the Advert - when I get the machine sorted - have had printing cartridge issues.

I wonder if Nissan had booked a full page advert in The Herald expecting a win in the 1987 Wellington race. Nissan's plans would have had to be changed when the BMWs were successful.
