Due to a long planned family reunion next weekend I just had the opportunity to attend one day of the Pre Reunion meet on Saturday which meant driving the 200 miles in 3 hours and becoming immersed in the activities at Laguna Seca. I was a little weary by the time I got home that night. The advantages for me is that it is uncrowded and one can park close to the track and the price is about 1/3 of the main weekend.
Always a welcome sight are the hills around Laguna Seca and no fog !
62689

Then park close to the track between turns Two and Three and watch a genuine 1960 Maserati T 61 or a 1955 Jaguar D-Type flash by.

Questions Ken.

We are in Monterey for the day June 3rd 2020 (cruise), probably catching up with Paula's daughter. Is it normally worthwhile heading to Laguna Seca on a Wednesday? Or any other petrol head stuff worth visiting?

Depending on how things go, if my wife can't make the trip to the UK in the August/September, I might well fly into SF and head for the Laguna Seca meeting, end August, maybe even only for a day or so, then head down to LA or fly Virgin from SF to the UK. If I'm without my wife, then I'm trying to spend the minimum amount of time away as possible, but include Goodwood.

Are there any track decent vantage points for an amateur photographer, meaning no wire fences?

Ray,
Although it is not official yet I think the first weekend in June will be centered around the Sonoma Raceway which is over the Golden Gate Bridge which might be a bit far for you but it is a very good weekend of racing.
I would love to link up with you somewhere so please stay in touch and PM me for more info.

for a replica, really?

928,
That does seem like a lot for a replica although it does show as a genuine Bentley on the Bentley site but it does have a different engine number. Was it altered to look like a Henry Birkin Le Mans racer ?

"The Blower Bentley represented one of two solutions to a problem. In 1928, despite the fourcylinder 4½ Litre’s Le Mans win, the consensus at the Bentley works was that it was no longer competitive. W.O. Bentley’s decision was to create the Speed Six. The other decision was to supercharge the four.

W.O. hated this latter idea. But Sir Henry Birkin, whose notion it was, had persuaded fellow Bentley team driver Woolf Barnato that it was worth a try – and, since Barnato’s heavy investment in Bentley Motors, Ltd. was the principal reason the company was still alive, W.O. had no recourse but to grudgingly give his okay, and incidentally find room at his factory for production of the 50 cars necessary to qualify for Le Mans. Fortunately, Birkin had also convinced the Hon. Dorothy Paget to finance premises at Welwyn for the conversion of 4½ blown production cars into race cars – so W.O. did not have to witness the final desecration which would, in his words, “pervert” his engine and “corrupt its performance.”

Actually, the performance of the Blower Bentley was spectacular – in short spurts. Blindingly fast, the car was also woefully unreliable. A Speed Six won Le Mans in 1929 and 1930. The Blower never did win a race. Its best finish was second in the 1930 French Grand Prix to a Bugatti that was half its weight. This was a compelling achievement, but didn’t impress W.O. much. The Blower’s other moment of competitive glory was at Brooklands in 1932 when Birkin broke the Outer Circuit record at 137.96 mph.

At $7375, the Blower Bentley was priced about $2000 more than an unsupercharged version. "

The Hill GH 1 /3 was raced by several drivers throughout the 1975 F1 season.
62836

The last driver to drive this car in 1975 was Tony Brise.
He really liked the workmanship of NZ mechanic Graham Donaldson. Graham Hill signed Graham D for the 1976 Formula One season to be Tony Brise's mechanic.
62837

Graham D even had me hang around with the Theodore Team as they prepared for Tony's last drive at Riverside in October 1975.
Luckily Graham Donaldson was searching for accommodation in London and did not go on that fateful flight that crashed and Hill and Brise and other team members lost their lives November 1975.

Thanks Ken. No problem with posting up to date stuff. Huge fan of Scott Dixon.

He was ably supported by several Kiwi businessmen including Maurice O'Reilly, who started Chicane Racewear. When Maurice decided to shut up shop, he sold the business to Shane Drake & myself and at that time, a young, chubby Scott was on the Chicane catalogue.

I had the pleasure of chatting to Scott at the Leadfoot Hillclimb last year and to say that I was impressed with his interaction with the spectators, is a massive understatement. He is a fantastic ambassador for the sport.

Sadly, it looks as though I won't make the meeting next year, though I am still hoping to make Goodwood. Not keen on having wire fencing between me and the action which does have an effect on which circuits to attend and why I like Goodwood and also Hampton Downs National track.

khyndart in CA

Ray,
Thanks for the nice story regarding Scott, he is truly a great ambassador for NZ and motor sport.

Sorry I can not join with you at Laguna Seca, perhaps another time. I know how you feel about circuit fencing but I should point out my "fence photos" were taken from the back of the parking lot and not in the general viewing areas. Can you park that close at Goodwood ?

We should enjoy the racing while we can as I see some of these young climate changers protesting and want all racing banned as we are destroying the planet for the next generation and we should be ashamed of ourselves !
I remember how bad the smog was in LA in 1972 compared to today and I think our generation has done a lot to to improve the air we breath for future generations. (That is the end of my evening rant as I have to rest after my carpal tunnel procedure today.)
Keep up those always interesting posts.
Cheers,
Ken.

Oh Ken! Brough Superior (cars and bikes) were manufactured in Nottingham, my neck of the woods. Most famous owner was Lawrence of Arabia.

ETO 347 is in fact a Nottingham registration plate (as is Nick Masons 250 GTO - and anything ending in RR, NN, TV, AL).

63285

If you ever get to Nottingham, head for Wollaton Hall, not far from Nottingham University on the western side of the city. Within the stable block of Wollaton Hall (used as Wayne Towers in a recent Batman film I believe), is the Nottingham Industrial museum.

Within is a fair collection of Brough Superior bikes.

Few know of the cars, but this pic is of my mum, myself and a younger brother, in Dad's boss's car.

Probably 1950, based on the fact that Mum looks pregnant with my youngest brother.

I admire those that have the resources to prepare and race in one class on the Saturday and come back and do the same in a different class on the Sunday.
For example Ken Epsman drove this mean 1976 DeKon Monza # 20 on Saturday in the 1973-1981 FIA,IMSA,GT Group 5A race and on Sunday he drove his 1984 Pontiac Firebird # 53 in the 1981-1991 IMSA GTO/GTU Group 6B race.

It was finally time to leave Laguna Seca so I went back to my new old car, a 2012 Genesis 4.6 litre car that suits an old codger like me just fine. I parked it on the old part of the track and remembered my first visit here in 1987.

Taken at about the same spot as the top photo except I am not standing in the middle of the track !
Turn 2 now is a sharp left hander not the long sweeping turn as on the old course that was changed in 1988.

Thanks for coming along for the ride. I think I will go off and enjoy some time in my cruiser " Moby Dick".
( Don't laugh at my big Korean auto as it is ideal for "Gran Pa H" and "Gran Ma H" to cruise easily to Montana, (if it is not snowing !) blow past long lines of semis and not swap lanes on the windy Nevada highways etc., to visit our 1st grandchild.
I can also now park amongst the "big boys," relax, and not bother you with my ramblings for a while.
You are a good bunch and don't complain and I appreciate that.
Cheers, Ken H.

The story to go with my photos is that as I parked my car at the local gym (Yes I do appear there sometimes !) a young Asian university student (Yes his dad must be doing very well ) comes roaring in beside me in his McLaren and while trying to be cool he forgets he is close to the bushes in his LHD machine and proceeds to swing open his door and scratches the McLaren paint ! (If only "Moby" had given the " cool dude" more space !)

Ken H, like Paul B and many others - enjoy your ramblings
- I can't see some of the last few attachments - post 109 and the one before.. but am wondering if they will show up now as look OK in my Draft message ..No they don't show ??

With a bit of luck this could be there next years event. I know Mike Ryan goes - this is progress on the Hawaiian Corvette Special Mike is claiming 425 bhp and a weight of 1600 lbs in old money.

P S was in your old home turf - yesterday, well almost !! at Te Poi for the weekend on Rapurapu Road, and went into " Town " Matamata .. to get a battery for a 1990's Landrover - the farm hack, love it .. then our mate's Dad arrived in his ex - Tokyo 1990 Toyota Fire Truck, a double cab with a tray - still has all the clips inside the cab for the guys gear - in really good condition - but I ramble too much.

Cheers Guys

That Genesis would suit you right down to the ground, and we will never complain at seeing pics of an event we couldnt make it to.

Yes Bruce302 - got there once in 1982 for the Ninth Historics - now 37 years later Wow !! ..

The Ticket and holder for 1982 [ posted before ] -my Twenty Dollars worth for three days - just cost a Hundred plus booking fee for one day at the Supercars Pukekohe plus parking of Seventeen Dollars - and that was with " Seniors " and Early booking discount, that a Mate did for me - in the end he couldn't go, so we got another Mate to travel with me..

The NZ V8's grid at Pukekohe ; Holdens and Falcons mainly with a BMW and Nissan in the mix - unsure what was in the BMW 3 series. as didn't get a programme they cost Ten Dollars - would you believe. this was my mates - he gave to the Guy that couldn't get there !!

Unlike this one ;

Ken h or Ken H, your pics are there now posts #108 and #109, cheers Guys.

Must look up a Genesis - don't see them in Aotearoa ??
They do bring in the newer model but think only the 3.6 litre V6 had seen one in Australia back in 2016..
