I have completed a Ford Escort Mk1(first CAMS log booked 1983) & have a COD & race the old girl at State Champs & historic Race events in Queensland.
Anybody else building one?
Mark Trenoweth has restore the Uniparts V12 Jag & does the same.
Fred Sayers has restored his X-Flow Mini and does the same also.
We need more cars to make a grid of our own.
In Qld we currently race with the GroupA & C cars in historic events.
Contact back if you are getting one ready.

Photo attached of the Dick Ward Fiat Abarth in WA. Raced in SE Asia with Rothmans sponsorship by Dick, not sure if its Group U logbooked but it was rebuilt over recent years & hillclimbed by Dick.

Gary, this is great! Lets keep this thread going. Do you have photos of your Escort? There are a few members on here with sports sedans that are being restored. Graham Booth is nearing the completion of the Jim Richards Falcon hardtop, and Rowan Harman (Aussiemonza) has a Chevy Monza.

It would be great race others. Up here in Qld we run with the Group A & Group c Touring cars at one event in the year. Thats why i race in the state champs with the 3D cars. I am currently coming 4th in he state champs points due to circumstances with the more powerful cars reliability.
What would we run in VIC at the Phillip Island event. Would we get a start???

Good question, touring cars appear to run full grids so there may be resistance to lighter faster unusual cars,Im no expert but will go to the VHRR lunch next Wednesday and do some research,I could have run regularity, but that also runs full fields we just need a couple of runs to gather some interest and momentum, for sure these cars would be attractive to a lot of people as its a diverse bunch what other cars do you know of Gary ?

In reply to sports sedans being rebuilt I bought a few years ago a mk1 escort.I traced its history back to wayne sutton of south aust.I believe that it was also raced in nsw by tony herbert by photo's i've seen on the internet.I am trying to find the original style of wheels for the car which i'm not to sure what make they are.The car has a 13b rotary in it at present but in talking to wayne he sent me some photos of it with a turbo pinto motor in it.If anyone has any photos or infomation regarding this car it would be greatly appreciated.I hope to have it on the track in the near future.

The photo was taken at Oran Park, just south-west of Sydney, sometime in the mid to late 1980's. It was most likely during a round of the New South Wales Road Racing Club's Sports Sedan championship.
NSWRRC ran club level events at Oran Park.

Ok went to the VHRR wednesday lunch and joined the club, with a view to sound out the where we can run our group U sport sedans in Vic. Hillclimbs, club trackdays and sprints is the short answer! VHRR organise Sandown ,Winton revival and Philip Island historics Philip Island is basicaly out as regularity is over subscribed ,and the fact we may run with group A [ CAMS idea]was news to the gentlemen i spoke to.I need to clarefy but they dont run sedans in Philip Island regularity.so it looks like until we get a group of good cars together PI is out,However Sandown and Winton would be open to us ,but it would be regularity.I intend to sound out Ian Tait the club Pres to see if we could put a display of existing cars on show at November Sandown to gauge public interest ,maybe flush out some other cars ,so we need to find some cars to make an attractive display so please let me know of any cars !

Considering group u is a cams class. U r all well to come up too Morgan park qld to race in the historic events. As I have said before we race with the groups a & c up here without any dramas. I also race mine in the state championship events up here. Group u is one of the classes that r included in the sports sedan qld champs. In the historic event we even have a perpetual trophy for group u 'the Fred Sayers cup'. Mark trenerweth races the jag up here with us.

I got a bit excited when the recent Muscle Car Masters at Eastern Creek advertised Sports Sedans as being on the program.
Given the type of meeting that it is, I was expecting to see Historic Sports Sedans going around, but no, it was all the modern stuff. Thats not disappointing, as I love sports sedans, but there weren't even any Historic Sports Sedans doing non competitive demonstration laps.
It seems that until there is sufficient cars to form a complete grid at Historic races, they will be on the outer. And when there are sufficient cars to have their own race, there will probably be cries of too many classes in Historic racing, and why should my group have to miss out on running at a certain meeting.

Historic Formula Fords have their own class with the modern F-Fords at State Championship rounds, so perhaps there a chance historic sports sedans can run with the modern cars at State championships also.

Hi Guys,
Fred was the instigator of getting Group U off the ground. He did all the ground work with CAMS and had the class officially recognised in 2007. It has taken some time to get some cars that have Group U CODs in Qld.
Fred put out newsletters & has a list of names he was sending info too.
May-be somebody in VIC / WA / NSW / SA or TAS could help-out to get some interest in the class so we can have a barrow to push to some promotors apart from QLD.
We all raced under evaluation in 2009 at the Morgan Park Historic event.
Back then we had -:
Mark Treneweth : McCormack Jaguar
Fred Sayers : His own Mini Clubman
Gary Goulding : Terry Corbett's Mk1 Escort
Darren Duffield : Alan / Keith Mconnel's Mini Clubman
Brad Stratton : Gundy Hunt's Torana

Since then -: Only Mark Treneweth : McCormack Jaguar
Fred Sayers : Mini
Gary Goulding : Mk1 Escort
have got their CODs.

As stated before, You can ring Fred on Brisbane Number (07)33592623 or
Myself (Gary Goulding) (07) 33513506 or 0438 104 231.
My email is gsgoulding@optus.com.au

If you would like to check out NATSOFT race results on the 30/07/2011 (Morgan Park Historics) you will see the results & qualifiying of the Group U with the Groups A & C.

Hope to hear from some of you Guys.

This is all looking quite promising. I really hope something comes of it. To start with its probably a matter of gathering the car numbers, then the doors will begin to open. From 1972 through the late '70s, Sports Sedans were the biggest crowd pullers in Australia. The class deserves to have its history celebrated.

Gary, is the Australian Muscle Car Masters a CAMS run event, or is it ARDC? I know the organisers had been trying to get a field of Historic Sports Sedans virtually since it was started. If you could get enough numbers, perhaps this meeting could be something to aim for if the CAMS historic logbooks aren't required there? The logbooks seem to be a sticking point for many Historic Sports Sedan owners.

Hi Steve
I am pretty sure that it was a CAMS run event. I think i might follow that one up with the organisers regarding getting a start with historic sports sedans. I might be worth a phone call. Eligible Historic Sports sedans can run under a temporary permit to race while being evaluated. BUT, may-be the Historic Log book application has to be in with CAMS. I'll check with Fred Sayers. YES, the log book payment of $660 is a bit steep, but in the end i paid it. What else could i do? I did fight it for a while with CAMS & tried to get it at half price - no luck with that one! Now it's done the pain is gone. I was just another expense in getting the car certified. I spent much more on the old girl getting her back to original.
You can still use Historic Group U Sports Sedans (with historic logbooks) at regular race meetings guys.

Gary, the bottom of the Muscle Car Masters website has the Australian Racing Drivers Club text at the bottom, and a link to their website. And I'm sure when I was watching some footage recently from the 2011 MCM one of the commentators commented on the great job the ARDC had done running this event. Would be worth looking in to. I can try and find out some info from my end.

Hi Steve,
I have already sent the organisers an email. I hope they reply.
The event was promoted by ARDC under a CAMS permit. All drivers had to be CAMS licenced. No problem here, I have one of those things.

Thanks Gary. I hope you guys can gather some numbers together. I'm sure, as you will agree, that event organisers will stand up and take notice once you have the makings of a full grid of cars. I have been really impressed with what Evan Munt in New Zealand has managed to do in bringing together a field of classic OSCA cars. But of course, NZ historic racing isn't as stringent as that of Aus. But I think it is do-able. The cars are out there. And, although people don't like the thought of the high costs CAMS are asking, surely to have the a historic log book makes the cars more valuable?

Still with Jim Anderson in WA m'thinks. He took it over from Gordon.

Go Alfa for a moment:
Gordon Stephenson raced many, one of which has been recently rebuilt, originally a sports sedan for Peter Wherret, then to Gordon in WA, then to Qld & then see http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/motorsports/162256-alfa-romeo-1978-116-gt-sports-sedan-history-pics.html

Will this car be Gr U?

Digressing, the historics at Sandown over the last weekend (V8s) were titled Heritage Cars. Group C & Group A including the Mike Roddy ex TWR Jaguar XJS, has me wondering if Mr Roddy would be keen to line up against the Trenoweth ex John McCormack sports sedan? Hard to deny their heritage.

Hey Cavvy, its good to see you on here. Thanks for the info on the Monaro. And the link for the Alfa.

This is the conundrum that faces historic racing in Aus as popularity grows in historic Sports Sedans. They are genuine historic cars, and both Group C and A cars raced regularly in Sports Sedan races in the day. But obviously Sports Sedans couldn't race in Group C or A races. And the same is truw today in historic racing. In fact, I know there was that big drama over that XD/XE Falcon Group C car that Allan moffat had as a spare and ended up being built to Group C specs in 1984, but never actually raced in a Group C race. And this car isn't allowed (still to the best of my knowledge) to race with the Group C and A cars.

With there being a growth in the popularity of old Sports Sedans, but not enough cars currently to put together a full field, where do these cars go? Should they race with Group C and A cars as some have suggested? Probably the only solution that will keep most people happy is to keep working to bring together their own races.

Should they race with Group C and A cars as some have suggested? Probably the only solution that will keep most people happy is to keep working to bring together their own races.

Hi
We in Qld are a little different.
We do have the Group U Sports Sedans racing with the Group A & C Vehicles.
We all have a great time & keep out of each others way.
Mark Treneweth is the quickest (But not by much).
We race for our own trophies in the same races.
All good from both camps of cars.
I have the Escort Sports Sedan that started this thread.
I went alright against some of the V8 Group C & A's this year.
I also race my Logged book Group U in the CAMS Sports Sedan state Championship in Qld.
I finished 4th with consistency.
Wayne Clift in his Group A commodore is a regular starter as well in state champ events.
Qld state champ regs allow for the combination of these vehicles.
So if you have one, then i invite you to bring it up to Qld to have a run.
Both in the State Champs or the National Historic event at Morgan Park Warwick Qld in the middle of the year.
You are all welcome & won't be turned away.
Just another point, I raced in combined Sports sedan & Group C race at lakeside in state champs event in the mid 90's.
Kevin Heffernan in the 'price attack' commodore was one of the Group C cars in those days.

Hi Guys,
Fred was the instigator of getting Group U off the ground.

Gary

I didn't realise you guys all ran together, the Sports Sedans with Group C and A. I think this is a great idea. There just aren't enough Group C and A cars in each pocket of Australia, so makes plenty of sense. So do the Group C and A only have their own races at some of the larger events then?

Gary Goulding

Yes , the Group C & A have their own series during the year on the eastern coast of Australia.
They even run at an event at Buthurst (Not the big one tho)

At the Mo Queensland is the only place that all the Groups U / C & A run togethor.

This is brilliant Gary! Keep up the good work. This is how these things gather momentum. I would suggest anyone with an old Sports Sedan try and be there with their car, even if their car is only on display, as a barn find or unfinished restoration. Strength in numbers is what you need, you'll build momentum and motivation, and more cars will come out of the woodwork. Potentially, Historic Sports Sedans should be able to pull fields at least as big as combined Group C/A, as there were more cars built. But it needs people like yourself Gary to get people moving, and make it known what you're aiming to achieve.

Keep us posted.

105Angria,
I recall a chap, name of Wayne Lanham, in NSW had a 105 sports sedan, circa 1985 ran it in events in NSW, he had initial difficulty getting his CAMS race licence, due to he having no left arm, but a strap on prosthetic, he had to velcro strap the plastic hand to the gearstick, and steered one handed. I cannot recall the colour scheme, i think it was a straight 6 Falcon engine.
Any info? I met him at the Solo petrol station/workshop in Ramsgate NSW

Weekend just gone, at HRCC Autumn Historic meeting, we had Chris Fung debuting the ex Larry Kogge R100, some teething troubles, but he is well on his way to getting his cod and logbooking.
My RX7 has had its final EO and Scrutinners declaration completed, all that is required is to submit those, the required photos, and balance of cams cod fee, and the x Bruce Smith 1985 Qld Sports Sedan championship winning car will be done.
I took it to Morgan Park early on in 2012, and gave it a run, in the wrt, on 10" slicks, it was interesting, minor troubles but getting sorted.

At the meeting due to low entries, the HRCC ran the Historic Prod Based Sports (group T) with grp C and A, and group S( prod sports with no history) only 14 total on grid. It worked out pretty good. It was a case of "best fit" .
At the July meeting, as per Gary's posts there will be C&A's and the U's will be with those.
cAMS has a vehicle compatability matrix, it says "best fit" is C, A&U all together.

I entered the RX7, again at Phillip Island, rejected, again, but notice they only had 42 C & A cars, so they could have fitted a few U's in.
Ian Tate , president of VHRR is well aware of the U cars, and knows about the compatability matrix, so when you approach VHRR, go straight to the top.
I will be entering PI again, with a note about the matrix, but, if more of us enter, and keep persisting, we should get a run, hopefully.

Dat2kman, got any pics of your RX7? Would love to see them. I'm really impressed with the efforts you guys are putting in trying to establish Historic Sports Sedans. As you said, you'll get there in the end, persistence will pay off. The cars are out there, and with the prices of most other historic racing cars having climbed quickly the last few years, Sports Sedans are sure to gather momentum as more people look to rebuild/restore these, and return them to the track. Many older Sports Sedans are still very realistically priced. This has to be good for the class gaining momentum with historic recognition and acceptance with event organisers.

quite right about the prices Steve, both the Ex Barry Bray A30 supercharged, and the Ex Cos Montorosso Anglia failed to sell on Ebay ,with reserves of about $6000, so maybe the most undervalued restorable race cars you can buy,my personal experiense ,is I restored my Eric Jordan Anglia as it was really only my time that was costing, now I need a trailer, COD, tyres, entry, race suit, boots, etc the whole thing has stopped, same issues as so many ,however found a trailer for $600 making it big enough for car, will start running in rackdays ,sprints etc in 12 mths we may have enough of these great old poorman racers together to put on a display then the momentium will pick up i believe

Neale, the pale blue Escort of Gary Ford, has run at a couple of the Historic meetings in Qld. It either has been granted a Group U logbook, or well in the process of!

Gary Goulding, i have entered the July Historic meeting at Morgan Park, however not in my U car, but in the Datsun Sports 2000 Group T car.
What is a Group T car, that should be the subject of a whole new thread on here, but a T car is a Historic Production based Sports Car, with a genuine race history, prior to Dec 1981.
There is another historic prod sports group S, but they are all replica's or fakes, with no genuine race history required, but they are popular, and cheaper, except for the Porsche 2.7/3.0 Carrera's, they cost up to $250 k to set up!!!

Gary, if ever you are wandering over my way ( The Gap), you are most welcome, along with anyone else, to call in and peruse the collection of toys

It's a shame you could'nt work on a Invitational Historic Sports Sedan class catering for older cars. The VHRR have run Sports Sedans at their Sandown Historic meetings in the past as a full class (non historic).

There are a number of cars in Victoria that run Super Sprints that could probably fit into a invited Sports Sedan class. Is the Winton meeting a ASAA meet? I can think of a few Torana's including Doug Dunster's that hes raced since at least the 80s that he runs at Winton Supersprints.

Hi All,

I am new to this website,

There is some good conversation going on here about Historic Sports Sedans and hope it can take off!

Some good news (potentially)

We are going to hold an event for Historic Sports Sedans at the Mallala Historic Meeting next Easter.
I know its a long time away but hope this gives people enough time to prepare cars, and something to look forward to!

I know that historic log books can be a nuisance to some degree, so to get the ball rolling and gain some interest, we've opened the door to cars with body shapes up to 1986.
I can appreciate this may not fit within the guidelines of the rules, but want to do something to get people enthused, cars out of garages and on the track! I already have 6 cars/people excited about it and hope to get many more from here on,
i know Clem Smith would love to see the old cars there and would most likely use his Charger as the pace car to start the event

Im hoping to have my car ready for the event, I have the ex-Barry Bray Turbo Nissan Stanza,
Barry is doing the restoration on the car now...

Lets keep this conversation going and lets get a good fields of cars on the track!

Also,
What happened with the Barry Bray A30...?
Did it get sold?
I remember watching this car race at AIR when I was a kid,
If the car is in Adelaide Id like to go and have a look at it...
Any help tracking the car down would be greatly appreciated,

Wow, this is really exciting news. I hope people get in behind this and support it. Historic Sports Sedans really has a lot of potential, and so far has barely been tapped into. Think of the strong following Historic Group C and A are enjoying. To my mind, Sports Sedans have even more character than these cars, and each is far more individual and unique. The cars are out there, and events like the one posted by Topgear need to be supported to help build momentum. Good stuff!

Hi Guys, Just to let you know that we had three Group U Sports sedans at last week-ends Qld Historics Event.
We raced with the Group A & C Cars.
I was lucky enough to qualify in 2nd position (out right). I was pretty lucky as the Ex McCormack Jag was a bit slow with a drama.
It evened out during the races with the jag at the front of the field with me (Escort) finishing 5th.
There where 20 cars on the grid & we all played well togethor.
It was all good fun
Cheers
Gary G

If you'd like to start a thread dedicated to the Mallala event, go right ahead. Anything we can do here to help you get the numbers, all the better in my opinion. Can you keep us posted as the entry list grows?

When you say Clem Smith would likely use his Charger as the pace car, are you talking about one of his old Sports Sedan Chargers?

Thanks Steve,
As for Clems charger, it is his red one that he uses for a pace car for the Clem Smith Perpetual Cup,
Its only an idea and the moment, we havent actually asked Clem as yet but im sure he'd be open to the idea...

I have started a new thread for the Mallala event,
The entry list is posted there and all applicable cars are welcome,

Thanks Simon. I know he has had more than one Charger Sports Sedan, he ran a neat looking red one in the early '80s, which I'd heard he still owns?

What happened to the Peter Finch/Gordon Stephenson HQ Monaro Sports Sedan that competed during the late 70s and early 80s? I think it came out of Western Australia?

I know roughly where the car is, the guy wants to sell it, Peter Finch wants to buy it, but every time Peter goes to buy it the guy wont sell it to him???

Its sad as it would be good to see it going again...

I am currently restoring the Barry Bray Stanza Turbo for the Historic meeting at Mallala...
A friend is also restoring the A30 that was also Barry Brays that was on ebay a little while back,
And Dick Ward is putting the finishing touches on his Fiat Abarth for the Mallala event as well...

Thanks for that. Yes you're right, would be good to see it going again. Its not one of the more famous Sports Sedans, but was a good car in its day and one of the last of the big body cars that were everywhere in the 70s.

Here is a photo off the net with the wheels I'm looking for. I believe this is Tony Herbert driving the car.Not to sure what engine it had in it at this time.I have other photos of the car as I own it and as Wayne Sutton had it.Will post them if I can get this first attempt to work.

Hi Roids
I had a phone call from Tony Herbert the other day.
He asked me to pass on his phone number to you so you could call to discuss the info you require.
Tony Herbert = 0488 090 444
