It would be good to have a 'get together' at HD with other members of this Forum so we can 'put faces to names'. Would someone who is more familiar with the venue than I am like to nominate a place?

The HMC marquee is going to be the easiest meeting point. While on the subject of other forum members, and I don`t want to start a shit fight, but all of us on here should consider paying an annual fee, I don`t know say $75, to help support Steve Holmes and his great work behind the scenes for all the members benefit of all classic and historic racing around the planet, not just in running this website, but all the little bits that go unseen - and unrewarded. I think it`s a small price to pay when you look at the big picture.

Other than we charge just $50 for ERC Series membership and it includes a great annual dinner...! (Happy for Steve to come along for free though!)

I'm heading across the ditch from Sydney for the second weekend, and hanging around Auckland for the NZ Air Show on the Monday 28th at North Shore Airfield.
It should be a good long weekend.

I'm with you Steve, the hours of enjoyment I've had from this site is immeasurable and what you are suggesting is a very good deal. One pays that amount or more to the banks for credit card "account maintenance"!!!!!

...all of us on here should consider paying an annual fee, I don`t know say $75, to help support Steve Holmes and his great work behind the scenes...

This idea was mooted some time ago, and I for one responded that it was a great idea. I think it was suggested at the time that Steve let us all know what he wanted to do, and what kind of fee / donation was appropriate. Steve, perhaps you are reluctant to 'ask' for money, but you need to provide us with some guidance here.

I would favour a donation scheme, only because the membership of the Forum varies from retirees on fixed incomes, to successful business people with the ability to donate more. The suggestion of $75 paid by 640 members would provide $48,000. Steve, what do you need to keep the Forum running successfully? Let us know, and maybe set up an account where we can make deposits.

OK, thanks guys, I really appreciate the gesture. Oldfart (Rhys) created a thread for this a few months ago also. He likened it to paying a magazine subscription. Certainly, this website would be a whole lot better and have a lot more great stuff on it if I had more time to dedicate to it. And time is money. Essentially, I'm doing all this for free. I love it a lot, but it is time consuming. But for now this site is safe and it ain't going anywhere, at least not until my enthusiasm runs out!

I hate asking for money, and I won't do it. But as you guys have raised this point, I'll let everyone make their own minds up.

So, if anyone wants to make a donation, you choose the figure, and email me at: theroaringseason@gmail.com It would be much appreciated.

In the mean time, we better get this thread back on track, before the moderator kicks all our arses: The 2013 NZFMR.

I emailed the event organisers last week about the tickets stating that the gates open (for spectators) at 9am, which happens to be when racing starts.
Apparently the gates will be open a little earlier, but please don't turn up at 7am!

I`d say if you want a good carpark, and not be in traffic jams and gate queues, 7am might be a good time to at least be there!

Does anyone know if an entry list has been released yet?
Quite often event organisers release an event schedule and entry list in the week leading up to the event.

I had an entry list a few days ago, but am somewhat hors de combat at the moment... About 343 entrants

If the pedestrian entrance isn't open, your ticket should get you in the driver's paddock entrance - but not your car. I'll aim for breakfast at the track - if I am allowed to drive by then...

Sorry about the format. I haven't the time or stamina at the moment to sort it! If I had worked out how to post it as as an ex-Excel table, I would have, or I would have converted it to HTML.

I accept no responsibility whatever for any errors or omissions and this is provided as a rough guide only.

Note that this includes both weekends and Classic Trial and E30 BMW are not running at both.

It's a pity there aren't more Can-Am cars running. The organisers had hoped for around 20 cars, but 9 practiced and qualified.

Woah! After an 8 hour trip to Hampton Downs on Thursday, then three days of too much sun, beer, and shooting the bull, and another 3 hour trip up to Whangarei this evening, I'm shattered! But I'd just like to say a huge thanks to the organisers of the NZFMR. What a world class event.

I'd also like to say a big thanks to all those Roaring Season members who came up and introduced yourselves. It was really great to put some faces to names (or usernames) of people I'd not yet met. What a great bunch of people we have on this site! I really enjoyed meeting each and every one of you, and catching up with those I already knew.

I'll be back for the second weekend of the NZFMR, so if any of you folks are attending, please come up and say gidday.

Hope it is up and running, as I haven't yet managed to see that group race. Hopefully I'll also be able to drive myself by this weekend and spend all of Friday and Saturday at the track, so I'll happily withdraw from the list of wannabe McLaren drivers - this time.

The extra tarseal and grass in the paddock area and much improved PA system shows the steady improvement and progress at HD. Nice coffee too.

Spent the last 2 days at HD. What a fantastic event!!!! I should have been competing but a couple of f--k ups by an engine reconditioning firm put paid to that. Excellent numbers (except perhaps for the Can Am cars) and, unlike some "classic" meetings, not full of Lotus 7 replicas, Mazda MX5's etc. What was most impressive though was the continued improvements at HD-paths have been sealed and the facilities in general are superb.
Makes a bloke wonder why the Government and others would put money into Pukekohe-it would take many millions of dollars just to get it up to a similar standard to HD let alone make it better.

Can I just say a big thank-you to all the people who are involved with, and organise, the official saturday night BBQ dinners at Hamptons. Good food, good entertainment, good company, and no egos!

Fun quizzes (if you were there, and saw a fat person in a white shirt running up to the stage, to win a prize, that was me !!!), and many a delightful conversation with the legends that were there.

Oh yeah, and people getting the odd autograph as well - I managed to get Jim Richards to autograph a couple of 1972 Heatway Rally booklets of mine, which featured his MORRIS MARINA on the front. He commented that he believes that he is the only person to win a Special Stage on an International Rally in a Marina....

I was also lucky to miss out on a big stack of second-hand Motorsport books that the Bruce McLaren Trust had been given to sell, although I still bought an Autocourse annual as "the price was right"...also bought a copy of Allan Scott's book "TWR and Jaguar's XJS Inside Tom Walkinshaw's Group A Racing Team" which I can well recommend to all. it is the first of 4 books he is writing which will eventually cover the Croup C Jag's, the Rover era, and the early years. In fact the Rover book is written, and due to be released later this year....the XJS book is 320 pages, the Rover book over 400!

Absolutely beautiful photos guys, thanks to everyone who has contributed, both with photos and details of the event. I checked this thread on Sunday night when I reached my motel, and in the 2.5 days since, its had nearly 1,500 page views! Amazing, and clearly hugely popular.

Steve, do you know how many views on the HMC thread over the last few days? I see the total is sitting on a massive 48K! Seems the musclecars were showstoppers. The HMC YouTube has had a good number of views with quite a few in Aus and UK.

Had to love the impressive F5000 turnout and hope for better support in the future for CanAm. Is Tony's M8E/F going to be running this weekend. Question mark on the McLaren Trust M8A too.

There is a very rare, early McLaren F1 car (in bits), recently imported into NZ too.

I'd need to speak to the owner before I divulged too much publically. I'll ask him tomorrow or Saturday all being well.

I'll be taking pics Friday/Saturday so if anyone hasn't had a pic taken yet and wants one, better post on here with car number/class... Just remember I don't have media accreditation so I can only take pics from the public areas - and I'll need a lie down or two during the day when the pain gets too much for me when the morning morphine wears off!

It's reportly to be the BRM M4B F1. The car was that was burnt to the ground tyre testing for firestone at Goodwoodi n the late 60's.

Howden Ganley told me last November that he was given the suspension of the remains after the fire for another project. Remains to be seen if it is the real deal. Hoping for the best..but unlikely !

Tell him to get in line until Duncan finishes the McLaren Trust car...:)

EDIT : I've just spotted on the NZFMR facebook page that the car's done and looks a treat!! Worth the wait.

Hi Brett,

I was told that it was the only surviving M8B (one of only two) and that a gentleman in the South Island has purchased it and is getting Duncan Fox to rebuild it for him.
This rebuild has been on the floor of Duncan Fox's workshop nearly as long as the Trust's M8A. Duncan and Tony (Roberts) of Group Seven Sportscars took the opportunity to pick up the remains of the car which had indeed been one of 3 McLaren M8Bs in 1969. That opportunity was to be able to build the two cars in parallel. For example the tubs of the two cars were almost identical. In fact the Trust car started life as Denny's CanAm winner in 1968 before becoming the "mule" for the M8B and subsequently the team's spare car. The other M8B (of original 3 which included the above "continuation" car) was trashed, as I understand because of severe corrosion on the salt-laden roads of Nth America on the way back to the McLaren base.

This means of the original 3 (or 2.5!) M8Bs there will only ever be one true M8B - the one pictured in the Trust's garage at the Festival. I can't recall if this was Bruce's racecar or Denny's racecar (the Trust car being at different times an A and the spare B). The M8B high wing car was the most successful of all the CanAm McLarens, winning all 11 races in 1969.

Incidentally the Trust car didn't run again this weekend because of major problems with the starter which is proving a headache in term of sourcing the parts. A less authentic set of internals is now going to be used to overcome the absence of any originals.

Yes the ipad has been located. It turned up in Tauranga having been wrapped in T shirts in the mad pack-up rush. It is being couriered back to Akl. My thanks and gratitude to Dale Mathers and his crew.

I'm always hopeful that if overseas owners/drivers can see what the festival is all about they might be tempted into bringing their cars out here and joining in the fun.

I was stunned to see this car at the event. As you've said Murray, McLaren built two new M8Bs for the 1969 Can-Am season, and upgraded Dennys 1968 M8A to '69 B specs to use as a test mule and spare. My understanding based on the chassis numbers, would be that the M8B on display was Bruce's 1969 car, and therefore the car which he drove for much of that season. He won the 1969 Can-Am championship, and given the McLaren Trust M8A was the car was Dennys, and he won the 1968 Can-Am, then these are the two championship winning cars from 1968 and 1969. Pretty impressive stuff!

Hi Steve. Not quite correct. It was Denny's car. Denny's M6A and M8A were -2, but Denny's M8B and M8D were -1. Just to confuse the anaraks! I thought this was our best Festival yet. Not a single wet day. We were pleased to get the Mcaren M8E/F going for the second weekend. Still needs a lot of set-up work. Pity about my poor old Corvette war horse! Don't know why it blew. First time a piece of my car has finished higher up the field than me!

GREAT SHOTS WISH I COULD HAVE BEEN THERE.WHATS THE STORY ON THE WHITE 67 #35 SHELBY MUSTANG? IS IT OLD RED DAWSON CAR RESTORED TO HOW IT WAS WHEN IT WAS FIRST RACED BY FRANK BRYAN? ALSO IS THAT AMC JAVELIN AN ACTUAL EX TRANS AM CAR? GRET TO SEE THOSE OLD MCLARENS TOO

Thanks for clarifying that Tony. And really exciting to see the M8B. What happened to Bruce's 1969 car? And which chassis was Lothar Motschenbacher racing in 1970?

Yep Steve the white #35 is the old Frank Bryan/Red Dawson Shelby Mustang. Its not really restored, this is how its current owner Nigel bought it back off David Bowden. Its in good shape, although the rear quarters need work. But Nigel will eventually restore it back to how it was when Red raced it, ie, metallic blue with the big gold numbers.

The AMC is Craig Staceys. Its not a Trans-Am car, but a tribute car.

Bruce's M8B-2 was burnt out in the 1970' and the wreck is in California awaiting a rebuild. Lothar was racing the Trust's M8A-2, which although upgraded to a 'B', still retained the 'A' tag.

Thats quite a hole! You could just about stick your head up inside there and have a look around!

Thanks for the clarification on the M8Bs. For a long time I'd assumed the car Motschenbacher raced in 1970 (M8A upgraded to M8B specs) was gone. He actually raced 3 McLarens that season. He began with the ex-works M8A/B and did very well with this car, regularly qualifying in the top four, and even lined up next to Hulme on the front row at Mid Ohio. But he crashed this car heavily at Elkhart Lake. He returned for the next race in his old 1969 M12 customer car, which he ran for two races before a new M8C customer car arrived. But he didn't seem to race the M8B again after its Elkhart Lake shunt, so I assumed this car was gone. Great to know its actually the car the McLaren Trust own!

Nice to catch up with you Richard. Although I wasn't racing (perhaps as well with a crook shoulder!) I also thought the atmosphere was great. For me, it made a change having the time to actualy chat to people and take pics.

Looking forward to next year's Ferrari celebration. I doubt we'll get as many overseas drivers in 2014 but the overall costs of bringing a car to NZ from Europe in their winter, racing at two or three or even four events, is probably better value cashwise for them and gives them more track time than a whole season in the northern hemisphere, so maybe we need to market these festivals overseas even harder than we already do - and it also brings in tourist dollars!
For us locals, seeing so many overseas cars is the real highlight and for the overseas visitors, they love to see our cars.

Like Beowulf, I have spectated at many circuits, and Hampton Downs and Goodwood are head and shoulders above the rest. I wouldn't go back to Monaco though. The glamour does not make up for being coralled in one section of the track nor the programme which has 10 minutes of racing followed by 45 minutes of inactivity.

NZ runs race meetings far better than the Europe and the UK - and they are better value for both drivers and spectators.

What you don't notice in the photo's, bloody brilliant as they are, is that ALL the signwriting on the Rover, including driver's country flags, are hand painted.
That's always the thing that bugs me about restorations that people do these days - the computor graphics that are done because there is a real shortage of people that can signwrite the "old fashioned" way.
Maybe I'm just old and fussy :-)

Rod, I`m glad I did a full signwriting apprenticeship in the late `70`s, rather than the `graphics applicator' course of today. When I`m not busy with the machinery imports, I enjoy helping people with their motorsport restorations doing the lettering by brushwork, but it is becoming a vanishing trade.

Yes, and all lovely clean passing you notice!!!!!!!Can be done, so long as everyone is looking in their mirrors.

Even the great Jody Schecter said.......'some of these drivers think their mirrors are for shaving'.........amen to that!!

Indeed Gerald. And where did that huge ding in the side of the Gimblett Camaro come from, was that another day? Or maybe better off not spoken of? A racing incident..... I thought of the 3 races shown in the meagre 23 minutes HMC was easily the best show. And as for Woody's slides. +5!

In the latest Classic and Sports Car mag, April issue, there is a write up and pictures from this meeting. Including a picture of Angus and Dale. Page 20. Also some eye watering cars for sale. Another Lotto ticket.

Thanks for that Beowulf.......the advantages of having the local news agent who is also a motorsport enthusiast.

I like the description that accompanies the picture........quote.....'Angus Fogg was trying everything he knew to pull off an upset with his Cooper S. He even nudged his front wing during one audacious overtaking move'.......

'Nudged'......what a glorious word. According to the Concise Oxford....'to prod gently to attract attention; a light touch or push!!!!!!!
A bit different from Murray Maunders...quote.....'a huge ding in the side of the Gimlet Camaro'.

I'm sure Murray there was fault on both sides, certainly according to a number of amateur photographers who witnessed the 'nudge', and that the Jury is out on that one. The thing is that Mr Gimlet could have swept past the Cooper S on the straight with ease, so there was no need to get defensive in that corner.

As Howard says, he works his arse off getting ahead in the twisty bits, then come the straights its all over, with all that bellowing horse-power swallowing you up..........
.....Do horses 'bellow'......maybe it should be 'neighing'.!!!!!!!!!!!!

Gerald, his name is Kevin Gimblett, and the damage to his door required a new door skin, so hardly `just a dent'.

My apology for the incorrect spelling. I have an idea that two drivers had 'had a go' at that door. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I cant find anywhere that I said it was 'just a dent' I was repeating what the caption to the picture said.

Arrrr come on you guys!! get with the program!! Gimbletts door leap out and damaged the front of the Mini, same with John English in the Camaro, as his left rear also damaged the front of the Mini and Pete Stevensons RH of his Mustang got in the way and leap back to also damage the front of the Mini again, all over the same weekend!! Hmmm im thinking im gonna have to "ban" these 3 vehicles!! infact the next time Angus is in with HMC i may hold all the HMC cars back so no one else leaps in front again, still!! didn't stop the concrete barrier leaping out in front of the same Mini at the same event? thats it BAN all the HMC drivers and concrete barriers!!!

Over and OUT

Grant, Indeed the writer/photographer is a friend, but he did a great job promoting the festival. Hopefully it will lead to a lot more interest from international entrants and visitors. Oh and he fell in love with the Ford Anglia while he was here.
I think they allowed 4 pages for the event instead of the usual 2.

Bruce.
