Where to start? Grew up in Hamilton and my first meeting was street race Mt Maunganui (pre-Bay Park) with memories of Ernie Sprague's Mk111. Maybe that's what made me a Ford guy?

Forest Lake Speedway and Puke gave me my racing fix and once I had enough pocket money Motorman and Motoring News from Uk (even tho it was months old by the time it got to NZ) kept me going between meetings. Each Xmas I was given the Shell annual and still have the full set, albeit well-read!

At the end of each Puke meeting would load up Dad's car with empty beer bottles to sell back to the bottlesr on Monday morning. Good money for a kid in those days.

Being from Hamilton was always a Jim Palmer and then Graeme Lawrence fan - always had beautiful looking cars. And in the saloons Paul Fahey was my favourite. Mustangs, Escort, Capri - loved the lot.

My uncle farmed in Southland at Drummond and I still remember visiting one summer and the sound of George Begg testing one of the sports cars up and down the main road. Imagine that today. I was lucky enough to be taken down to his workshop and sat in the car (1967 I think). We also wandered down to Teretonga and I steered my Uncle's Chevy Impala around the track. No security then....

We moved to Palm Nth in 1970 so Levin became my fix and then Manfeild from meeting #1. Great memories - wet days and dry. Sadly was there for both Dawson's crash and Leckie's fire.

Flagged at first Wellington street race. Heady days. How anyone approved the one-lane bridge I'll never know, and people sitting and standing on top of the containers used to mark the track in places. The Swedish taxi was unforgettable

Sounding old but the current stuff does little for me (how could it when you think back to the 60s, 70s and 80s) and rarely I attend a meeting now unless its historics. So thank you Hampton Downs

Great site Steve. I look forward to making a few more contributions

Interesting history Lindsay - thanks for sharing. Learnt more about you from reading this than talking to you face-to-face!

Hope you enjoyed the first weekend of the Hulme Festival. Going back down for the second weekend?

Cheers, John

Good things come to those that wait Steve! Thought I had nothing much to say as a spectator but began to realise just how much NZ motorsport history I've been lucky enough to see and enjoy. I guess that is what makes the Hampton festivals so special

Unfortunately not John - road trip to Wellington to deliver my daughter's car and her worldly possessions to her new home. Poor timing! Thanks again for the hospitality and the introduction to the Cheetah. That will be some beast
