#49-My memory at the time was NZ Hot Rod mag had these 3 pics with the caption-
Going..... Going.....Gone!!!!!!
Yeah, that was terrifying to watch, memorable though !
I was lucky enough to catch Peter Lodge years later as he and his son Shane were tied up in historic bike racing, I was surprised to discover he was intelligent, quiet, clever and capable in a variety of fields...having seen him wrestling Baloo down the quarter at Bay Park in my youth I was convinced he could only be a raging psycho !
A couple of extra captions would be appreciated here, many of those rods and rails are very familiar but don't quite ring my instant recall bell...Baloo and Brian Trigg's Andromeda rail are well-etched however !
Thanks for sharing Steve, these images are a great depiction of a very fertile period in NZ's motorsport history.
Peter Moloney's 2.5 Cooper Climax. Yes, strange home-brewed exhaust.
Edit : Rex Ramsey's Le Grand Mk 7 at Bay Park Dec 68 with Moloney's Cooper disappearing out of shot left.

One caption I remember and love is Jon Pattons GMC rail at Kopuku when he won the fastest time
-a tatty wolf in sheeps clothing-
He still has this rail.
Colin Lane.

Colour shot of Noel Jones.

Baloo again, pictured at Autorama, 1970.

Hot Rod mag at that time gave coverage.
Autonews, motorman didnt cover them, only some stockcars and speedway.
Just find those who were there and I am rapt at the pics appearing here....neat.
Enjoyed Errol Uttingers Ponty straight eight rail.
Heading South now, this is Ruapuna, 1970. That little fenderless pick-up on our left was featured in the very first Weetbix Hot Rod collectors cards. Who remembers those?
Attachment 35768
This is Aussie Top Fuel racer Graham Whithers, doing a publicity run at Wigram.

Pictured here is Garth Hogan, assisting Whithers.

Brian Trigg, I believe.

Moving on again, to Rotorua, from 1970. Pictured in the T Bucket in the background is, I'm told, Terry Furness. Terry was featured in a book I write a few years back called Kiwi Hot Rodders Guide To Life.

Curly West (left) and Dave McDougall. The bright green GMC 6 powered Willys coupe is also pictured earlier in this thread. Curly later replaced the Willys body with a T Bucket body, and stored the rare Willys body behind his shed. He later had a rubbish remover come collect some junk off his section, and the rubbish guy crushed the Willys body, thinking it was junk! Anyone who knows anything about these cars knows how valuable they are now.
The car still exists in Christchurch in its T Bucket guise, and was also featured in my Kiwi Hot Rodders book.

Still at Rotorua. Interesting the mix of cars being raced.
Attachment 35783
I have no idea!
Attachment 35784
Noel Jones' Rebel dragster.
Attachment 35785
John Parry in the hot rod pick-up. Note the quad-carb set-up on the flathead V8! Not sure who is in the Chevy coupe.

Amazing x-ray photo Allan did of Baloo in 1970.
