Incredible
On the Dunedin thread is the continuing - as yet incomplete - story of Jim Bennett and his Furi cars.
The story is up to Furi 2, but Jim's main Racer has been Furi 9 [ Impulse ] for many years.
A single seater in a very 1930's/40's style, but like the Midget Jim raced in the 1960's.

a couple of details of the real car ;
Jim Bennett's own words
" A proper old type single seater like the midget raced in the 60's always held some appeal. Having always liked the appearance of the Jamieson twin-cam Austin 750 of 1934 I decided to create a look-a-like. I would have preferred to use a water cooled 4 cylinder motorcycle engine but the rules of the Classic movement meant using oldish components. A Hillman Imp seemed the only really suitable engine that I could think of that would have a similar specification and similar power to the original Austin which had a very special 750 alloy twin-cam putting out around 112 BHP at 7000rpm in 1934!
A boot load of bits were acquired from a long time friend. As design progressed on the Austin Look-a-like it was decided to utilise Imp parts for most of the car including the front hubs and kingpins, attached to a piece of tube for an axle, rear mounted gearbox inverted got the drive the right way and conveniently lowered the propeller shaft 100mm allowing a low seating position like the Austin. As the Imp steering rack was used this meant that the engine had to be leaned a bit to the left for the steering column to clear the distributor. A Shorrock supercharger from my squirrel like collection was fitted behind the motor, above the foot-well, and driven by a shaft running alongside the cylinder head. To tidy the appearance up another Imp cam cover was fitted over this tipped over at the opposite angle to the engine. This gave the appearance of a twin-cam a bit like the Austin and has provided as much fun listening to comments as driving the car does."
Like the last comment ;
Chaindrive - we await further photos of the progress and do not worry about " The Home for the Bewildered ".
More of the Furi 9 story will appears soon on the Dunedin thread - just have to post on Furi's 3 to 8.
I consider it as the epitome of a classic racing car
And consider this ; Entry to " The home for the Bewildered " we will probably arrive at the same time !!
Jim's car yes I think it is brilliant !!, and am very pleased that Jim has shared his information with me.

Only Model Bus I ever had was a Lincoln Toys - Micro Model - of a Bedford, painted blue, no windows or interior detail around 1;43 scale.
This from a for sale ad - mine was deep blue and silver - no signage - from memory of about 60 years ago.

The good news is I have been spending some time working on my Garage Scene - actually been cutting and painting.
About - bl**dy time actually -too much talk and little action !!
Chaindrive - it's all your fault and that Nic Butterworth guy from " Old Men Sniffing Glue ",plus Jim Bennett's son Warren on another Fb page..
Chaindrive - I have had no success tracking down any sets of Herb Deek's wire wheels for 3 x 1/24 SMER kits. Apparently he is not doing them any more and isn't contactable via the internet.
Word is that he was running down his stock.
Any alternatives you know of, as I don't want to build these kits with the original plastics?
Must be a small business opportunity here for someone younger than I...
ERC.......Only other aftermarket wires wud be Fujimi Wire wheel sets. Not bad but not as good as PE

Looking Good " Tony " a k a Chaindrive ..
Cheers
Where did you get the wheels Chaindrive? Still trying to get some Herb Deeks wheels for the Talbot & The Alfa SMER kits that arrived last week, ex Germany. Postage was just 8 Euro.
Think they were Fujimi wheel sets. Used the Merit/Smer wheels with centre removed and inserted those
Just had this response chaindrive:
Hello, unfortunately I am currently out of stock of those wire wheels. I plan to do another run, however it will not be until the end of this year, or the beginning of next year.
Thank you for your interest,
Herb Deeks
Definitely worth waiting for ERC
Thanks bry3500, but they are more for the Ferrari GTO than the 1949/50 single seaters. At $35 a pop, not exactly cheap either!
Hi ERC, these are worth a look but expensive too. They mention the SMER in the description

I know someone who used these on the Smer Alfetta to good effect

What happens to these fantastic models when you keel over chaindrive? Family keen to inherit, or donated to the Southward Museum?
These are national treasures.
Make sure your will is up to date!
Possibly on the market soon---------to keep the debt collectors from the door !!
ERC and Chaindrive ..
ERC re " These are national treasures. ".
They are indeed and should be in a Museum at some time in the future - or even given to those who now [ as in at the time ] have the vehicles.
With regards your last line - could I join the queue, Chaindrive (Tony), to get one or two of them donated to a worthy cause - Me !! Assuming that when I enter Gods waiting room at the " Home for the Bewildered ", that I actually have some faculties left and some facility to store them .. especially after Snoopy and I have been busy .

Keep up the good work ..
