These photos are superb. What is car #17 on post 27? I have vague recollections of a vintage Porsche 917 running at Le Mans in the late 70s and gaining a bit of notoriety for the fact it was several years old. Is this the car?
Absolutely stunning photos, thanks for posting.
The #17 Porsche is 1976, Joest 908/3 driven by Kraus and Steckonig, finished 7th o/all.
Wasn't the "old" 917 a bit more modern, at the start of the GT era that followed GpC ?
Thanks Steve & pallmall - I'm really enjoying loading all my old pix
Fortunately I've still got the Programme officiel - pallmall is correct in that it's a Porsche 908/3 Turbo entered by the Jost Racing Team but it was driven by J. Reinhold & J. Barth according to the programme.
However Wikipedia says that the car finished 7th and was driven by Kraus & Steckonig.
I haven't heard about the 917 running in the late 70's. it certainly wasn't entered in '76 or '77.
Outstanding Nigel, thanks for sharing them. I like the crowd and background shots too, always interesting.
Do you have photos of the other classes at that Bay Park event Nigel?
I keep going back to your Le Mans photos. They really are stunning, and that was such a wonderful period in the history of that race.
