There you go Kev, the very next post and you are in print!
Interesting that by 1966 the majority of the Anglia’s are all running 1500 plus pre Crossflow engines. One is Zephyr powered.
Kevin Greene’s Chev Coupe is blue.
Thank Ken, it is pure gold.
Bruce
Interesting just how many cars then, were of British origin. No Australian cars - though maybe some were built there?
All Cortinas and Mini Cooper S s compliant, but I thought that MSNZ was looking to FIA Group 5 for 1968
Great field of wild Zephyrs and Anglias
So Kevin.......how was your A90 eligible to race and to get points and the Cortinas and Minis not, was it your multi carb non factory set up?
My point exactly, , so why was there this segregation in 1966, in 67 I could see the reason.
Historic Saloons-
The 1966 season saw two separate championships take place alongside one-another. With the Allcomers being the headline act, MSNZ introduced a second championship, for FIA Group 2 touring cars. Group 2 regulations were already in wide-spread use throughout the world, and used for the British Saloon Car Championship, European Touring Car Championship, numerous European national championships, and were also used as the basis for the Improved Production regulations used in the Australian Touring Car Championship. Furthermore, the Sports Car Club of America established a new sedan racing championship in 1966 which it called the Trans-American Sedan Championship, or Trans-Am, for short. The SCCA used FIA Group 2 regulations for the Trans-Am.
I am sorry to have opened a "can of worms" everyone.
Will I be banned from entering NZ again on Fri. 16 th with Judy ?

This is when we really miss our late David McKinney., he would have the answer to my question at his fingertips, and about Kens......................tell us the Airport and arrival time and the "lads" will be there to welcome you again, no cherries though, season has finished.
Ahhhh, so long as its not 6.45 am again
The Aussies were racing their "Humpties" ,Ray
Only Aussie car here was Graeme Harveys "Golden Holden", also a Humpty.
Falcons were not seen as racing then, EH-S2, HD-X2, HR-X2 were raced over there, but not here
Some standard model Holdens were in B&H
Carlos Neate won in a Nissan Skyline GT here though
Really no Aussies till 1968- after Allcomers- Grady Thomson winning the Heatway Rally, then Glenvale 100
Finally, I think I got it sussed, no probs if I am shown to be wrong.....
2 simultaneous championships until 1977, then became Shellsport Series.

John,
We appreciate the offer but we are getting a rental and heading off on a pretty tight schedule, weather permitting.
Thanks,
Ken
Ray,
Perhaps the Australians got discouraged after coming over in January 1960 at Ardmore.

Ken, thanks for that, went to the meeting had the programme, Feb 66. Interesting that Coppins was in the Zephyr Corvette, yet a bit later in 1966 Ken Bailey drove it,the May meeting, was a small affair as a combined Motorcycle and Car meeting, after the debacle of the ACC Reverse track meeting in April .. and may I borrow the pics and put on the NSCC thread ?? - have done so already.
The Race is for 1601 cc and over all the non-eligible are the sub 1600 cars which presumably had their own race earlier !!
Tom Grace there in his Cortina - the Man from Woodhill who was a huge supporter and a stalwart of the Club in the late 60's onwards.
also note the race distance is only 3 laps............
When I first started going there it was always full circuit.
And I was there the day in 1970 my Monaro equaled the outright lap record on the full circuit.
As overheating seemed to be an issue for these cars..looking at Morrari ...then maybe 3 laps of 2.2 miles was suitable
What we have now at Puke is not interesting to me
petrol was 35 cents a GALLON then, Ken, unlike the miserable litre you get now.
Dauntsey Teagle told me in 1993 he made money from prizegiving running his Formula Ford in the 1970s
Dale, Humpies in Oz, Humpties (Dumpties) in NZ. Just like Austin Somersets were Summersaults. :)
I thought Ellis may pick that one up if incorrect...he has a humpy, nah....humptie is better
Clip from Auckland Star, 1964.
As long as the term "allcomer" remains on saloon car racing programs, drivers will continue to take drastic measures to devise a car ,which, although bearing little resemblance to its original state, is immenseley fast on the track
Another newspaper clip -April 1967=
ACC is putting on the Dunlop meeting at Pukekohe .
*Monsters Roar for the Last Time
This will be the last major race for allcomer cars since R.Frost introduced the class at Levin 8 years ago
Prize money will total more than &200. more than any other saloon car class in NZ except Wills 6 hour*
This is a great Terry Marshall photo of an Allcomer race at Waimate in 1966.
You folks will get the names correctly.
Is that Paul Fahey on the left and Dave Simpson on the right of the front row in their Anglias (Are they fastbacks here or did that come later? ) Rod Coppins is looming at the rear.

Winter of 1965 Jack Nazer, modified Anglia body-cutting down roof height, front smoothed with radiator intake lowered.
Dave Simpson copied, but Jack didnt race in 66
Simpson and Fahey both appeared Nov 65
At the same time Custaxie was being created.
Allcomer racing had become so popular, and was being the main draw card.
Renwick was the first on the SI calendar , and the prize money was bigger than ever before.

Quote from an article by Allan Dick entitled "The Fastback Anglias " in issue #75 of NZ Classic Driver
" Call them ' fastback ' or ' breadvan ' these remarkable racing Anglias are a New Zealand motor racing institution "
Two twincam Anglia's appeared at Pukekohe in the November 1965 meeting , with " very similar streamlined noses "
Paul Fahey # 104 and David Simpson #54
" ... Then three weeks later, at the seasons second meeting both cars appeared with major and unusual body modifications " the December 1965 meeting at Pukekohe.
.... " both teams worked in total secrecy, thinking they were going to spring a surprise on the other Both cars appeared with roofline extensions that filled the gap between the revers-angle rear window and the end of the boot - to stop turbulence in that area ".
The December meeting must have been Dunlop sponsored as Dave Simpson put a strip of masking tape over the Firestone stickers .. his car had a logo Lotus Anglia on the nose ..

another one this time Frank Radisich who had moved on from the Humber - Zephyr, later Humber Jaguar the January 1968 GP meeting if my notes are correct [ maybe Jan 1967 ]
Attachment 51242
Whose is the Mustang ?? was it an Australian import ?, Fahey then Simpson in the Anglia's Rod Coppins in the Zephyr Corvette
Attachment 51248
That looks like the GP Roger (number of spectators) In which case is Geoghegan in the Mustang?
Whose is the yellow #38 at the beach? Reg number doesn't match any of the other 3 shown.
Yellow Submarine was DA 6070
Rhys...good question as Fahey Mustang also had stripe on the side, thick in the middle, thinner stripes above and below. Being a Shelby meant it has a scoop in the bonnet at that time..104

However that looks like the red and blue 2 stripes you can see on Geoghegan mustang google images.
An Allcomer / Open Saloon modification.
This early Terry Marshall photo which includes his brother, shows Spinner Black's Mk 1 Zephyr at an engineering shop in Tatuanui, east of Morrinsville, getting the rear fenders cut out to allow for the wider tyres. Some good Kiwi ingenuity in very basic conditions.

Thanks to Reece Killingback for this action photo.

( Ken Hyndman..who is about to leave Los Olivos for 12 days in NZ and I won't be bothering you as I will not be on a computer. )
1964 ? Pukekohe ?
Note the "interesting" rear guards now on Spinner Black's Mk 1 Zephyr (with Raymond Mays head)
# 114 as he gives Ivan Segedin's big-bore Anglia a bit of a hurry-up !
