Jim Carney honoured in Northland Cancer Treatment Centre

Bit off topic I know, but I was just having a browse online at some Northern Advocate stories when the following paragraph caught my attention. Hopefully when they open it an appropriate photo will be chosen.

"The Jim Carney Cancer Treatment Centre is named in memory of the Whangarei businessman and philanthropist who died in November 2000 and the Carney family Trust has contributed heavily to Project Promise. The centre will provide day-stay treatment for cancer patients, including initial consultations, chemotherapy treatments and follow-up from medical experts, including other related nursing and support services, but some who need radiation treatment or have complex cases requiring specialist care will still need to travel to Auckland."

One has to ask when they will name a psychiatric ward after a Motorsport person - and who!

Heaps of candidates for this "honour" (the alternate to Carney Centre I mean)

On a more positive note, Jim Carney was a great guy, very supportive and generous with his time to up and coming (or down and desperate) drivers. His help and advice extended beyond Jim Richards.

An executive member of MANZ as it was then known, Patron and great supporter of the Northland Car Club and a behinds the scene help to many as Howard has alluded to. Jim was a magic person to have been privileged to know.

    Did Jim Carney race himself?

There must be a number of other patrons whose contribution behind the scenes to the sport over the years should not be lost

Yes Jim Carney raced before he got behind Jim Richards. Jim ran a little white Escort i think in one of the B&H races.

His wife raced as well in quick Arden Mini.

Na, Paul was just going past when she came back onto track (backwards). These things happen.

She certainly was not a 'little Danica', also a very approachable and nice person to chat with.
