Thread: Historic Sport Sedans

There was much discussion at Manfeild on this and other cars.
    Has not been found.......yet.
Memories are that it could have ended up as a dirt track car in some form.
Jennifer did enjoy racing against her old red Mazda RX7 V8 at Manfield last weekend.

The consul was built by Keith weir and john thorby. Sadly Keith passed away this year.
Nice sunnies to shield the glare
She had a ton of fun driving with the Sports Sedan gang at the MG Manfeild
I recall seeing the Consul in a hanger at Tauranga airport, early '90s I think ( very vaguely). It was owned by Phil Rudd at the time.
I wonder where it is now.

I think Graeme Clark here in Tauranga ended up with it, he's still around so easy to find out. Dale M

Nigel- beautiful pics giving lots of close up detail....thanks for posting.
Jen said when she ran it, there was a 6 cylinder ( Holden ?) in it, heard that later a Rover V8 had been fitted.

I once owned a Consul Capri, can't remember who I sold it to but now wish I had kept it ( doesn't everyone!).
The one in the pic is from a UK sales site, for sale at £25,000.

Just spoken to Graeme Clark- quite a bit to write here on the man-
Used to own the Capri V8 that Ron Findlay runs in with us.
    Probably his favourite race car.
When he owned the 315, he took the motor out , put in the Rover V8.
He put the 6 cylinder Holden motor into a Torana XU1 body and that is the car that Dr John Elliott runs in Centrals.
The 315 had gone from Jen to Phil Rudd.
    Then to Graeme
Did a deal with Derek Mitchell, who then sold it to a chap with gliders in Kawerau.
Graeme then bought it back, used it for a while, then sold it to a chap in Taranaki- logical with these colours.
Still digging and will post results as they come to hand.

John I used to spend a few hours around a fridge in Matamata with Graeme way back, top guy and real good bugger, and has had some interesting cars.
Dale you would remember the 'Fridge' we mention.
The Capri had a Mopar in it at one stage, it was a blue/silver colour, he ran in sports sedans at Bay Park it was quick for a road car. local cops between Tauranga and Matamata wasted a lot of time trying to have 'a look' at the car.

Boy these are a great looking car. There was a boy racer version in Palmerston North when I was growing up in the 1980s. Had a really deep metalflake paint job. The paint must have weighed a ton.

IIRC Wayne Andrews ran one of the above Capri bodies on one of his 'A' Grade speedway saloons back in the mid to late seventies, got T-Boned by Woods @ Beachlands the first meet after I changed to the blue/white colours for the mustang, I remember that well!!, I had to fix it the next week.

Is the Lancaster Volvo not the same car as Dave Agnew runs in OSCA, albeit with later C70 body panels.

The chap in the Naki might well have been Darcy May - he ran a car that ticks all these boxes in sprints my club ran at Taupo a few years ago.

John - is this car still around ? Love the car that Nigel photographed in Tauranga a few years ago. Would make a great addition to any grid.

Mike- will flick you some pix of this car from Taupo track for you to post

    From Graeme-
Rons Capri was first owned by Vivian Munk , thats the late Ian Munks wife, he was a good friend of mine in Christchurch. I used to run the Capri in the clubmans class which was WOF and street tyres otherwise whatever you wanted then put slicks on and sometimes run in OSCA. Even beat a few of them which pissed them off LOL as I could throw my tyres into the car and drive home. I used to run a Chrysler 340 cuin in it at the time.

Those were the FUN days. I remember running it at Wigram on year and John Osborne made me alter my spoiler ,which was an RX& one, because it was a half inch wider than the body and deemed illegal under Oscar Rules

Well Graeme, John was a stickler for the 'rules' (lol) he was a hard case, serious one minute and laughing along with you the next. Miss his humour at meetings. never forgotten.
Yea remember coming back with you from BayPark to Fridge in the Capri once, hard case days they were. have to catch up with you.
John can you pm me contact cheers

I have just got off the phone to Darcy. He is rapt there is a class for his car as he thought it could only run as a club car.
He used to pedal the Max Irwin Escort V8 in earlier days
Graeme Clark and Darcy want to be involved here.
Darcy will have the Consul 315 racing at Hampton Downs in January.
Thanks to Nigel Watts for posting that brilliant pic from the All-Ford day with enough detail to get Graeme Clarks number off the car
