All Cooper S models built in Australia were Morris with the block print style badging. When an ordered for delivery through an Austin dealer in NZ the car would have the Austin badges fitted at the plant before shipping. Grilles generally remained the Morris version, some were changed by the dealer in NZ.

    January 1969. Pukekohe.
Derek Bell of Great Britain, came out to NZ to drive a Ferrari 246T
with a V6 engine along with Chris Amon.
I took this photo of him as he walked with his dad behind the
grandstand. He signed it a few years ago as he liked the image of
him looking young and thin. He went on to become one of the great long
distance racers and he won the Le Mans 24 hours, five times.

While on Mini Coopers, here was a trip the Cooper Car Club had to Helensville in 1991.
Mine is the Metallic Red with gold stripes. All had the same style grille.
It was an Austin 1964 997 and had the factory metal rally seats.
Car was in Chch turn of the century.

    October 1969.
Graeme Lawrence now had the Ferrari 246 T that Chris Amon had driven the previous season.
It first appeared at this Baypark meeting.
It was a beautiful race car and it was great to watch Graeme in action on this short track.

I took my brother who was not a car or race person to Baypark for one of the meetings where the Ferrari was running and his comment was that it "sounded like a real race car".

Thank you rogered. That is wonderful information on a beautiful racecar. I do know it was at Baypark in Oct. 1969 when I took these
photos. Perhaps that did not count in the record book !.
    "
With backing from Shell Oil, New Zealand national driver Graeme Lawrence was then enabled to buy '0008' from Ferrari. He made his racing debut in this car on December 28, 1969, in the Bay Park International at Mount Maunganui, New Zealand, finishing second. "

That would have made a nice investment compared to some of the things I have spent money on !

    Oct. 1969. Baypark.
Indonesian driver Henky (Hengky) Iriawan entered in the Gold Star event. He drove a beautiful new Elfin 600 with a FVA engine. The car was dark blue with a red stripe and gold pin striping.
The B&W photo does not do it justice.
He was friends with the Lawrence family and you see him here having fun with Graeme.
Sadly Henky died a few years later in a go kart accident in Indonesia. His legacy is carried on by his grandson Senna Iriawan who is a promising young race driver today.

Now there was a name I had forgotten! Really nice guy too.

  12. #52
Yes, and easily the most misspelt and mispronounced race driver name of the day...little bloke went well in that lovely car, though.

    Bay Park, November 1969
We were spoiled back then with racing at either Bay Park or Pukekohe just a few weeks apart.
This shows Graeme Lawrence during practice at Bay Park. The Marwood Eisert is in the background.

Also Graeme trying a new type of spoiler ! I wonder how that worked at high speed ?

    November 1969. Bay Park.
Graham McRae's first appearance with his McLaren M10A with a Traco prepared Chevy 5 litre engine. Chassis # 300/06.
It looked great in the Crown Lynn black & gold trim.
Graham was very talented both as a driver and a constructor.

First photo shows the M10A being loaded onto a trailer at the Bay Park pit area.

Next photo shows a concerned McRae waiting for the car to be prepared.

Last photo shows a happier Graham McRae by his M10A and being
assisted by his mechanic, Murray Charles.

    Bay Park. Dec 1969.
Swede Ulf Norinder checking out his Lola T190 as Graham McRae looks on. From the stories at the time, Ulf was just as dangerous off the track as he was on it !
He did enjoy his visit to NZ even if he was not very competitive !

    Dec. 1969. Bay Park.
The Big Banger Saloon Car race gather before going out on the track as Bryan Faloon goes across in front in his Rorstan Climax.
He had one of the first "Bell" type helmets and when I asked him what it was like, he kindly let me try it on. He was a really nice man.

Note in the centre as Red Dawson puts his helmet on that his Mustang does not have a front spoiler on as it had previously.
Is that due to the short straights at Bay Park and better cooling was needed for the hard braking ?

Can you you pick out the 3 "Cambridge Team" cars in this photo ?
