Yea think you are right Steve. That bloody Datsun was quick, with the car and his driving he dicked me.

I've got a foot in both camps, being born in the NI, but grew up in the SI, and spent much of the '80s at Ruapuna (mowing the grass, painting the "new" clubrooms, waving flags and competing in club events), before returning to the NI for work.

Thanks for the fantastic video clip of Trever Crowe driving his home built creation it must have been so exciting to drive. It would be great to see more Osca & Sports sedan clips of those days.

Would be even better to see OSCA re-introduced in its original NON- spaceframe format today, imagine the variety of cars we could have now.

the only fundamental difference between OSCA and MANZ rules is the former allows engine swaps .ie principally the use of American V8 engines which a large Christchurch car dealer happens to import , in British saloons....editorial Driver may 1972 no.30

Yes I would agree that if space framed cars were not allowed to run in osca.It would be a far easier challenge for the kiwi inventer to construct a far cheaper car to race. eg any normal floor pan with the addition of ford 9 inch diff, 4 or 5 speed gearbox eg toploader ,t10,or japaneese equivalent. The engine could be a cast iron block or alloy blocks 302,351 or 327,350 or ls1 5.7 /// ls2 6.0.Alloy heads are okay adjustable shocks to.Up to 20'' inch wheels.Carburated or injected.

Engine and trans combos could be bought from a wrecker for under $7,000 and a performance cam fitted

    Cars like Rob Kenards Cortina
    Ian Munts capri
    John Osbournes Rx7
    Trever crowes starlets

Cars could be constructed for under $ 30,000

This would create big fields again like the 70s 80s and the 90s

A fairly fast car for a fair price.

The OSCA rule of only allowing the firewall to be recessed 12" with no mods to inner guards /chassis rails etc made everyone put their thinking caps on in relation to engine choice etc, to accommodate the large number of front wheel drive cars now would require the addition of a decent size driveshaft tunnel plus clearance for a rear axle assy. Keep the rear wheel wells to original dimensions ( No Tub's) with the historic 5" flare per side dimension.
Better shut up now before I get started...

looking at the lap times for a TL Falcon@ Teretonga (~1min 3 seconds @ Teretonga ) with a sensible tyre choice a light car built right should do sub 1 minute times with relative ease. The difference is the TL car probably has over 30k tied up in the motor alone because of the way the rules were written.

Subaru should be easy to make rwd, perhaps some of the AWD variants might work?
