Thread: Austin-Healey’s and the Austin Healey Car Club of NZ and Others

From a magazine titled New Book of Motorsports published in 1975 or '76. Don't know who or where except that it is from Australia.

Having checked with Carol, I've confirmed that this is "Erg's Friend"...

A very early appearance of Peter Hopwood at Amaroo Park, he doesn't look too fazed about locking it all up heading into Honda Corner.

  3. #683
Which leads me to wonder if the picture I posted earlier...

...is actually 'Erg' with numberplates removed.

Thanks Milan a great photo - sat there for much of the 3 days we were there in 1982 for the Ninth Historics - this would be just a Sports Car Race - with current racers .. captions says " for more than 30 years ". was 36 and a few months since I was there ..

    Brit & Euro gathering 3 March 2019 - some " borrowed " pictures

A great gathering of cars by all reports and quite a good group of Austin Healey's.

Here are a selection - from John Vevers [ an Austin 3 Litre and BMC Man ] as well as the Brit Euro's own photographer. " Classic Driver Magazine " were there too !! have to find their photos..

Russell Ness - 3000 Rally Replica - built up by Andrew Shrimpton a few years ago [ Car was / is ? for sale at Caffeine and Classics - a weekend ago ]
Think the Valiant Healey at the other end of the line

Not the Brit & Euro but the " Intermarque Concours " a week or two ago - the Valiant Healey - Mark Donaldson photo - supplied by Allan Horner, who races a Sprite in the " Classic trial"series at Hampton Downs and Pukekohe.
Allan is having a tough time at the moment with his health. I wish him well.
Car was recently restored by Grant Mackenzie, after the attempt a few years ago by Phil Mules to put a V8 in it.
Phil lives on the Gold Coast - or did back in 2017 when we were last in contact.

Otaua Hillclimb this Sunday, also organised by the MGCC - VCC invited, so I might just amble down early. Well done to Darryl of the MGCC and his team for both events.

ERC thanks for putting that on this thread, great that MGCC have continued the event since 1990.
Will be good to have more Historic / Classic / Vintage cars at the event with the VCC being invited.

    - Tried to post this earlier but it all went @#$%^ .. Grrrr ..

The Fred Losee [ Loose ] 100s at Balclutha in 1963, Fred was an American working in the South Island late 50's early 1960's- the car returned to the USA with Fred .. am unsure of the chassis number AHS .... ?? .. have been informed AHS3802, both it and AHS3803 were supplied to Royston Distributors in the USA in April 1955 - have located another [ later ] picture of the car - posting separately

the photos from Allan Dick archives ..

Comment by Michael Charles Salter - Mike Salter that I met in the USA in 1982, from Canada ? .. he knew the car and was / is an AH Specialist Repairer and parts Guy [ or was ].

quote " I watched Fred Loose race his 100S at the Dunedin Festival Road Races in 1957 (I believe). Ross Jensen was racing their 100S at the same event. I have since had the honour of driving the ex Loose 100S since it was restored by Fourintune many, many years later. "
    Mike uses the " U " in honour so must be a " Canadian Eh " !! [ an American /Canadian note - Ken H ]

Knew of " Fourintune "- have a business card somewhere ..

The mention of the Ross Jensen Car AHS 3908 - the car still in NZ here a montage of photos of Ross with the car..

Photos also from Allan Dick archives, were part of his article on the car in NZ Classic Driver - issue #70
back in Jan - Feb 2017.

Will post the whole story if you would like Gentlemen .. as now two years since published and am sure Allan Dick would not be concerned..

I remember seeing Plume signs at servos when I was a kid...

So many old brands then. Atlantic (Esso), COR (BP), Texaco (Caltex), often several at the same 'independent' servo.

We in NZ had Plume, Big Tree, Caltex, Atlantic, Shell, BP and of course that NZ icon " Europa " - owned by the Todd family who imported and later assembled Rootes Group cars - then Mitsubishi and others.

Re-reading Kens comment as have added a bit more to the posts on the 1982 USA trip posted back in 2016 - a few more people identified and car details corrected.

The Trip was because of these cars ; a group of Books by the " Healey Boys " Father and Son.

Have also got out the magazine " Vintage Racer "as going to scan and send pages to the Guy who has built replica of the 1950 Cunningham Cadillacs and see Hans Nohr is one of the photographers who pics are in the magazine at Laguna Seca in August 1981, the year before BMC BOY and others did the AH trip and West Coast tour.
Bringing back great memories - and have got back in touch with quite a few of the people from that time in the USA.
