Kevin , my GT6, parked beside the Healey, I didn't quite get the alignment right, but would have been a good look for a Healey !! ..

AHCCNZ events - 1980 National Rally at Rotorua - back in time

The 1980 Rally at Rotorua, we held the Rally there quite a number of times in the late 1970's through the 1980's, last one '87, unsure if held there since 1990.

*** The White 100 that is in these picture is Des Spillane from Temuka, It is not Chris White's car which he acquired later on and has Reg NE354 .. not BH2270 ..
I attended in my TR4A, the second time had been to a Healey Rally in a Triumph, done previously in 1976 at New Plymouth. Don't know why we didn't take the Mark 111 Sprite, could have been the time of an engine rebuild.

a personalised plate before such things were available and turned into a profit making exercise, you had to request a plate letters and numbers in the 2 letters and up to four number then wait for them to be issued, the H series followed by either 100 or 3000 were popular, [ you had to have a reason to request a plate " damaged " was the best reason - just take to the old plates with a hammer when the news ones arrived and head of to your local Post Office or Transport Dept ] - my flatmate '81-'84 Lyle Chambers, of BSA special fame in the blue jeans and brown shirt

Under the bonnet, Ross Cammicks 3000, radiator is angled to accommodate Rack and Pinion Steering I believe, and the car had other mods over the years, especially after Ross travelled to the USA in 1982.

a well known car from Wellington, owners name escapes for the moment.
*** John Rundle and Anne Rundle's steel wheeled car, John passed away a while ago, info from Barry Moon - the car features in other photo's in the thread ..

The notes are incorrect - this is an early 3000 - sidescreens not wind-up windows so not John and Anne Rundle.

Further post with this photo done recently February 2024, before my mistake was corrected.
    Am unsure whose car,
The Rundle BJ8 was sold in 2009 in Wellington and is now in Christchurch, according to Ross W Osborne, " Big " Healey Registrar and " Healey Registrar for the NZ Club.

Barry Moon also passed away in recent years, sadly. Went with him to the 1989 Rally at Masterton and surrounds.

the line up at the Gymkhana, includes my TR a Jaguar, Hillman Hunter, a Mini and some Healeys - just as well as was a Healey event. The Gymkhana was held up in the Mamaku's and organised by Phil Mules, whose other Healeys and Cobra have featured on this thread.
Am going to repost some Healey photos from the Telecom Motorfest thread to here.
That is the end of the 1980 Rally pictures.

    LX100 previously ID9783 My 1953 A-H 100. as it was in the mid 1980's around '85 !!

Bumpers and valance removed, no driving lights and now sporting 72 spoke Wire Wheels, on the rear, off a Triumph TR6, that I had used on my TR4A at times. 48 spokes were original, bloody narrow though !!
It has a new soft top, had only the frame and a hardtop when purchased, soft top was purchased in the UK during my 1982 trip to the USA and UK .. I liked it without the bumpers, the front one was a non-original one, as were the brakes and the 14 inch Hotwire Mags. I believe that Lance Elliott has taken it back to original when he did the restoration that was required. Unsure who has the car now.
I bought it from a guy in Laingholm who also had an MGC, but it had spent some time and had the " modifications " done, funny brakes and those Hotwires when owned, by a guy from Cook Beach, Coromandel. had correspondence about it but gave that and the workshop parts book [ original ], manual [ a reproduction ] to Lance Elliott.

I would really like to know if the "Healey Enthusiast" who asked to borrow some drawings which were given to me by the Healey family when I visited them in Perranporth, which I agreed to, and then despite the staff in his workshop telling him that he had borrowed them, flat denied it, has ever shown my STOLEN drawings to anyone else. Le Mans Sprite.

Oldfart, that is not good, they would have been a great gift from the Healey's to you. Most " Healey Enthusiasts " are good guys and girls. having said that I still have a book loaned to me in the early 80's, which I neglected to return and have now lost contact with " Paul " originally from Sydney, but living in NZ at the time. The book is still in the same condition as when I was lent it..

They were a bit precious, pencil, "near plans" for the Le Mans Sprite on about A1 size drawing paper. As you say Roger, most are nice folks, as always one rotten apple in the barrell... If they do turn up anywhere at least someone might know where they belong. And I still lend out things, another gone AWOL is my copy of Ralph Watson Special Engineer

Unfortunately even I do not have a spare copy of Ralph Watson Special Engineer as otherwise I would send you one. As it happens I loaned the last one I had, to be never returned. :-)

Trevor, your article in electronic form is on the favourites bar on my computer, I have a look every so often, met Ralph a couple of times when my mate Lyle had his BSA Special and we shared a house in Herne Bay, he was a friend of my Uncle Eddie in his NSCC days

ID9783, some shots in 1982 to compare with LX100 which are 1986 I think

Posted photos of LX100 and realise they are more likely 1986, by the other cars owned the Daihatsu was 85-87 approx
here is the car as purchased apart from the new exhaust, an early replacement and quite shiny.

a lot of activity went on in the 1981 - 1985 period in the garages at 88 Sarsfield Street, we had the AHCCNZ spare parts and my mate Lyle was the parts Manager, when I was Club Captain 1981-82, and worked on this Healey, Lyle's BSA, my TR4A, with help from Ross Cammick, as well as servicing mates cars for a small fee usually a case or two of beer, we had a small garage pit, ramps, stands, and various jacks to help !! called ourselves " Kerbside Motors { a division " the Backyard Motor Company " a take off of " BMC ".

Healey's back to the topic and Posters ..

A couple of copies of posters / adverts for Austin Healey's in the 1950's ..

Austin of America " Austin of England " , my car had that badge on the rear, this would be 1953, ater the car was shown at the 1952 Earls Court, London Motor Show as a Healey then Leonard Lord head of Austin that became the fledgling BMC. Lord had it Austin - Healey badged, they raised the headlights slightly from the prototypes.

my cars never looked that good and even looked like this at one stage, with other BMC products and a Fiat beside, complete with Sammy " that " Dog in his favorite place wherever we were even when working on the cars.

again my cars didn't look as good, in 1981 I owned this Sprite, purchased with the Insurance money from the crashed TR4A - yep that one Ken, that had all the bog in the front shroud. I actually bought the car back from the Insurance Company as the damage was really only to the panels, chassis still good, as were the mechanicals.
