I'll be impressed if someone can ID the driver of the Husky on the last row.

Correct Carlo Rod Millen. It was called "The Cob" and It was a quick little thing with glass front doors and rear door and bonnet. Was used as a driver for getting to and from work. Steve raced it originally and both he and Rod shared it for fun. It was used for everything.

Heres a photo of Steve hillclimbing it.

My guess left to right as we look at it
    Front row Coppins Fahey Marwood
    2nd row Richards Riley
    3rd row S Millen Sundberg ? Halliday
4th row Collingwood ? Simpson or Crosbie ?
    5th row R Millen

    Blue Escort could be Harrington.

Before Most of Us Were Born.

These 2 photos are the only motor racing ones in my late father's collection. He wasn't a motor racing fan, boats were more his thing, living in Devonport. We never got an explanation of the photos from him, but a friend of his was a salesman for one(?) of the car firms in Albert St, Auckland in the late 1920's - 1930's and that may have been the connection.

Venue is obviously Hennings Speedway at Mangere, but the Who and What are a mystery. Also the "When", although it should be 1929 or 1930 going by the "D-plate" with the dinky little straps and buckles. Plates were changed yearly in those days, and 28/29 and 29/30 had a dot or a diamond in the number on light colour on dark background.

Quite a nice-looking car. Any suggestions? I honestly have no idea, although there are several likely candidates in old Hennings Speedway photos in books.

I think the fourth row might be Greg Dervan in the purple mini with gold writing, and Stan Baird in the L and P Escort.

Probably Sundberg in the Escort, or possibly at the end of Harrington's ownership.

Possum and Max Irwin were an impressive pair at hill climbs with lots of noise speed and flying rocks in the mid to late 70's

These are beautiful photos Stu! Thanks for posting. The car in the first photo is impressive! Just look at the workmanship that has gone into the rear bodywork.

Both these photos were taken at Hibiscus Coast Car Club events.
The first at a Bardahl Hillclimb 1978 and the second at their Grass track race meeting 1978
I have added a few more for old times sake taken at the same meetings.

There was a big grass track oval at Devonport where the Golf course is now opposite the old Gas works in those older days. It had a swamp in middle as well i think as the sea came right upto the other side of the road. There used to be races for motor bikes and cars, and you sat up on a hill to watch. Remember going to watch with my grandfather and father when i was very young. They were big meetings.
