    Halliday/Woolf Escort "103"

Great site, and the recent albums from the 70s scene are a treat. I own the ex Halliday Escort, which went on to be further modified for Allan Woolf when he won the BNSW champioship outright in 1974. It's currently in the New Zealand Freighters livery from 1973 when the Halliday brothers were still campaigning it. The one thing that neither Rob Halliday nor John Harcourt (who campaigned it in the South Island Shell Sport series in the 80s), is the original registration number of the car. As soon as MNZ scarppaed the need for cars to retain their road papers, they pretty much disappeared for the radically modified cars, as this one was.

Rob Halliday and John Harcourt have both turned out all their racing photos, but none of us can find a good enough front on shot from the early 70s or late 60s where the registration number is clealry visible. The nearest we've got is two of the shots from the Sumpter collection, but not quite good enough. Perhaps someone out there has one?

    Thanks everyone, John Dennehy.

John, I hope you don't mind, I just moved your thread into the General Discussion forum so more people will see it. Hopefully someone here can help.

It would appear the car wasn't fitted with licence plates any time after the 1969/70 season, unless it only ran them on the back? I'm trying to find photos of the car from the 1969/70 season to see if it had plates on it then.

John I think these might be from the 1969/70 season, but again it appears the car isn't wearing a licence plate on the front.

    Early Halliday Photos

Kevin Lancaster who is a very old friend of Don Halliday has allowed me to post these photos he took
in the 60's. There doesn't seem to be a plate on rear either.

Didn't your uncle Gordon McBride run an Escort with Mac Mufflers signage?

Close Grant, Gordons cars signage was Macs Mufflers, which was Gordons business in Mount Maunganui. He sold it a few years ago to someone, who he can't remember, but who he thinks was just going to use the escort for parts. He sold the Escort to buy this which he raced for a while.

I raced this car (The Woolf escort) in an unusual way once. John Woolf was towing his Dads car with their Falcon ute and I was towing my Shellsport car with my Falcon panelvan. We were young, good mates and just a little bit competitive, (don't know where that came from!).
Started off OK but ended up pretty full on. Very naughty boys, who would be locked away for it now. It is strange thinking back to those more carefree, liberal days. Make know mistake, i realise it was very silly now.
That escort was a pretty neat piece of gear.
