Photos: The Bruce Wells Collection - Oran Park - Part 3

Continuing with our series of photos from Bruce Wells, and this is the next instalment from Oran Park. The following photos are from two OP events held in 1965, being July and September. Again, the machinery, the crowd, the lurid angles of the cars, are all incredibly portrayed here, and stunningly captured by Bruce. I'll ID as many cars and drivers as I can, but, as always, any input is appreciated.

Several of these cars appear in earlier OP collections, but still the number of Humpy Holdens continues to astound me. There can be a dozen events held in a single year, all at OP, and rarely does the same car ever appear twice! And don't you just love those Peugeots.

The brilliant portrait shot of Leo Geoghegan was in this folder, and I was going to only post it in the portrait chapter that will come at a later date, but I figured it really deserves to be here too.

Leo Geoghegan in the Lotus 32. That car is returning to Australia for the Tasman revival meeting next month. The mini #76 is John Harvey and the black GT Cortina is George Garth (ex Geoghegan).

Dale, where is the Geoghegan Lotus currently?

The last batch form the July event, including Frank Matich in the beautiful Lotus 19B.

Geoff Smedley of Launceston was employed by Total Oils and looked after the team cars.
This is a pencil drawing he did in the period of the Lotus

On the demise of this car Geoff went to Elfin and machined and installed some of the suspension and other useful bits from this car for the Matich Sports Car build.

Wow, that is stunning! It even appears to be at Oran Park. Thanks Ellis.

OK, this is the first batch from the September 1965 event. Is anyone able to ID who might be driving the fantastic looking Studebaker? Roger Ward and Warren Weldon drove a very similar looking car in the Sandown 6 Hour race in 1964. Is this the same car?

Check out the crowd and the lines of spectator cars in the first two photos.

Note the Pete Geoghegan Mustang pictured above. My understanding is, this car made its raced debut at Calder Park, August 29. That being the case, and with these Oran Park photos being from September, this must have been one of the first events for this car.

Huge crowds. Huge diversity in the types of cars being raced. I wonder if the two are related?
