    Bad Bentley driving !!

" Anyone else remember the aftermath of this act of total stupidity by the Bentley driver? Whenuapai 1998 "

Ray thanks now I remember the date - The Bentley " Team " arrived with a huge transporter and " Gothic " dressed entourage.
How the car passed scrutineeering with the studs along the bonnet middle, I do not understand.
He did big 360's creating huge smoke and car slammed right into him as driver could not see.
They had to use a Pick-Axe to open the boot to shut of the electrics and everybody cheered that, but slammed his driving .
Believe the owner / driver was never invited to another " Classic "meeting.

More from the scanned recently pile. Lost count of the number of hours spent/wasted this last couple of weeks logging/dating/sorting cleaning the slides. Where would we be without spreadsheets?

And I say you need a more literate sign writer... Waikaraka Park where getting decent pics from the public enclosure is just about impossible.

Congratulations to Liam Lawson. Pity the Sunday Star Times never mentioned the TRS series at all. Won't be renewing our subscription and sent an email to the paper expressing my disappointment that they can publish large opinion pieces on rugby in the off season, but never cover motorsport. I don't think Brendon Hartley got a mention last year either, certainly nothing ever about the practice times or grid places.

    Now a tricky one...

The Bennett Austin A40 was in the programme for the Whenuapai 1992 meeting #40. It was not in the programme for the 1994 meeting - but there was no other car carrying #40 either.

Stripping the slide, the film number doesn't equate to 1992, but does equate to 1994! So can anyone confirm that the car raced at Whenuapai in 1994?

Maybe I should ask Janice Holmes if she still has the original spreadsheets for TACCOC race meetings, or, as I suspect, were most meetings pre Excel days.

Ray, a lot of publications published stories about Brendon if there was a wiff of him getting sacked. I was amazed at how infrequently any of them ever had the author's name attached.

You also asked if anyone had seen the crash at Whenuapai involving the Bentley - one of the worst things I've seen on a 'race track'

I seem to recall that was the year Mika Hakkinen came along.

Thats a great shot of the Bennett A 40 Ray, There is a lot of body work to get it looking that good. Very cool machine!
I hope you can find out if it raced in 1994, maybe one for Milan?
    Cheers.

    Ray and Paul

I've worked on this car for a couple of years, didn't realise until a week ago that the nose was removable....
Could have saved myself a few skinned knuckles if I had taken a closer look at the fasteners holding the nose in place.
Perfectionist Peter Bennett had painted the fastener heads the exact shade of red as the rest of the body and they escaped my attention during several front end jobs where I wished my arms were about 12 cm longer, reaching through the nose to access various parts.

I was standing right in front of that incident. While not the worst accident I've seen, it was certainly the most irresponsible and avoidable. The race officials have to take some of the blame though as he was out of control from the get-go. We were all waiting for the big moment - hoping that a black-flag or the end of the race would come first.

I hadn't realised that he had the Rolls Royce with the plate 'BROKE', which I seem to remember running at the Ardmore 1989 meeting.

Hi Bruce, I will start work on the Anglia after we get back on our feet after repairing the damage from the two hurricanes
last September and October. Probably take most of 2019 to get back to normal!
I'm mulling over building a replica of the Dave Simpson car although I'd rather have a genuine shell to start with.
Meanwhile I'm still trying to get the A40 to another iconic track ( besides VIR) this year, possibly the Laguna Seca round late in the season.

It has been a while since I last saw the Simpson Anglia and I understand restoration has started. I believe that tha car is being restored to its last guise as Goodlass ran it.
We had David Simpson as our guest at the Taupo Historic Grand Prix and I understand that Jamie Goodlass who owns the car called in and talked to David.
Unfortunately I missed him as I was tired up with other things which was disappointing that I missed him.
Must put it on my list of things to do and go and see what progress has been made.

Keep us up to date if you are going to Laguna Seca this year.

    Regards
    Bruce

Bruce, thanks for the info, I don't want to do a replica of an existing car so will do more research. Hopefully can find a rough original of one of the missing Allcomers Anglias - Nazer, Sprague, Radisich or others, and restore it to the original spec.
I'm not sure if the Bryan Faloon Anglia is available but that would be perfect for me given my history working with Bryan.

I haven’t seen the owner of Bryan’s car at the vintage swap meets for several years.
The Sprague Radisich Car is the Simpson Car.
No idea if the Nazer car even exists.

Sorry Ray on sidelining your thread.

  19. #2739
Nazer body was written off when Jack bought it, he had it straightened
Barry Algie told me he used the body on his stock car in late 60s.
    This is a dead end.
