Thread: Just A Mix Of Pics - Ray Green Collection

Yes - Berg was sponsored by Strata. I guess it was a Canadian company and I have a feeling they may have still been with him when he broke into F1 with Osella about 1987.

Berg looked good out here in Atlantics in January 1983 and so I expected good things when I turned up for the opening round of the British F3 Championship in early March - but there were a couple of guys called Senna and Brundle who looked handy while in any other year, Davy Jones would have shone.

The Formula Pacific has a Canadian flag on it but I'm not such what make of car it is! Ralt?

This is the meeting at which Jensen demonstrated the 8CLT.

The Berg RT4 is in the colours and sponsorship with which it raced in the 1983 International Series but it had the number 4 for all the races.

Thanks again Milan. Confirms the date. With the (cost) limitations of film, I didn't take as many as I would have liked and some, sadly, are out of focus and not worth showing on here.

Incidentally, Don White with the Sizaire-Naudin, (he actually had 2 of them) lived opposite the top of our cul-de-sac and the thump, thump, thump as he trundled down the street always brought me to the roadside. He also had the maroon Allard and a gold coloured Rolls Silver Shadow.

Quite a few names I got to know over later years, including Richard Baker (MGA) who sold us our first MG Montego and was another North Harbour Badminton rep player. I think he also sold us our third Freelander.

Berg replaced Danner at Osella after Danner was drafted into Arrows after Marc Surer's horrific rallying crash which killed his co driver. That was 86.
    Berg was #4

Dave Whitehead graduated from a Ford Escort to this very potent Reliant Kitten. Dave very kindly let me a have a short drive of his MG Magna - which was a challenge, as the gear-change layout wasn't the usual one.

Back to the Pukekoke meeting March 5th 1983. The days when you could see the cars without the concrete and wire fencing. I wonder if those safety measures are part of the reasons for a drop in spectator numbers? Looks like Chris Atkinson and Barry Phillips in the Lotus Cortinas.

I'm guessing this is Peter Benbrook, with the Ford Mercury Special, based on Milan's useful programme scan.

My first ever visit to Pukekohe and as a guess, February 6th 1983. I have no details of drivers. Would appreciate the makes of the single seaters.

That was a Club Circuit meeting and I don't have the programme. The single-seaters have permanent numbers so they should be the same cars that ran in the 27 March meeting.

Thanks Milan. Titan looks to be correct, but #29, I hadn't even heard of Rolt before! There again, my knowledge of F Vee is almost non-existent.

Keith had a couple of the Titans and ran a driving school at puke for a couple of years.

These are from club curcuit back in early 83, I had just put new engine in Angle Box, there was a couple of black minis with big flares, and they were pretty quick. good fun times at club curcuit.

PS that is not engine smoke in 1st photo

ref post #1215, The Red GT40 is an ERA Replica ( Mono Chassis ) owned/raced by Anthony Leighs, Canterbury. Car was previously owned by Grant Aitken, Queenstown/Cromwell prior to getting the McLaren/Amon tribute Mk2 built.

Thanks Jac Mac. I suspected it was a replica, otherwise there would have been a big song and dance about it, but it always pays to check first, whenever possible. Nice to see though, and I have no problem with replicas, just as long as they are entered as such. The race entry system relies totally on drivers putting in the correct information and I for one would appreciate it if the entry had (R) afterwards.

In years to come (even now!) race programmes are a valuable resource for historians - and nothing is more annoying than someone pointing out your mistake AFTER you had done all your research.

Ray, The Thunderbird is the 2nd one in the Pre 65's. It's driven by Stuart Crosby, ex Mayor of Tauranga.
