That Felday 4WD again - Shelsey 1967.


One of the most famous saloon cars of the era, due mainly to the 'Run Baby Run" signage.

There are often people in these pics that give clues. The tall guy to the left, looking away, is Dave Watson, who acted as one of the club stewards, so that confirms it as an NSCC meeting at Cadwell.

Dave was the manager of the local Hertz office and I worked part time for him on Saturday mornings. When Hertz shifted from Ford Fiestas to Renault R4's, Dave refused to drive them and it was he who christened them 'Clockwork Frogs', a name that has stuck with me ever since. It was in the Hertz garage that we used to 'race' the Fiesta's and we learned to handbrake turn...

Post #1512 - I was right. It was in the programme as an Iso Grifo - but agree, they seem to be almost identical.

First Lambo I think I had seen. At the local garage. Parent's house was the one shown directly above the Duckhams sign. Probably about 1969 - going by the number plates.


Richard Hudson-Evans in the Mini based Cox GTM. later, the name changed to just GTM.


The Jaguar XK150 driven by Dave Preece, July 1980. Purists may prefer the XK120 but I rather like the XK150.


Lotus Seven copies are always difficult to name, so if anyone can confirm the makes for these two, I'd be grateful. I could guess, but won't!




At one time, this was probably the most raced classic car in the country, as Tony Herbert was able to enter in about three classes at many meetings - and did so! I'm not sure of the date or event, as it could be a TACCOC practice day but not sure about the tents across the other side of the track. Could be a practice day before a Nissan Mobil 500 meeting?

Trying to categorise/date before I go away, so not much scanning being done, but a lot of data management work. A recalcitrant scanner that doesn't always focus properly isn't helping... As usual - A Mix of Pics.

I think this is a Miller, but I'm not too hot on cars like this. At Silverstone July 1977


No such problems with the Lola Aston Martin though! July 1980 and I still haven't tracked down a programme for this meeting.


I was having problems with my own camera at this meeting. Using a Russian Leica or Contax copy called a Kiev. On several occasions, the film jammed and I had to open the back, hence the leaked light. never had that problem with Dad's old Leica, nor a succession of Pentax film cameras.

Beautiful Montreal Ray in a really nice colour. I see it is RHD which makes it very rare as well....one of 116 in RHD.
Is this taken in NZ Ray as if it is it is owned by a lovely old gent.

Your picture from 1971 Brands Hatch, i wonder if this is the same car at Taupo this Year. Travelled with the English F1 contingent.
At Taupo this year I had the pleasure of chatting with a gentleman in a wheel chair who was looking at Bretts car and his wife mentioned he had worked for Surtees on F5000s, so I took them nex door in the pits and introduced them too the now owner. The look on his face when he saw the Surtees was unbelievable and after discussion It was the car he worked on and he burst into tears, it was an amazing moment to witness, and all those years coming back. They spent a while talking and was great to think history meeting again.
I believe that this kind of meeting is what we all do this for and why we love these special cars, as every one of them has and is something special and a part of some persons and in most cases alot of peoples life.

That 1971 photo you took of Mike Hailwood at Brands Hatch in the Surtees TS8 (005) is the same car that he drove in the 1972 Tasman Series.

Not sure Rod. Off overseas in a day or so, (with NO motoring items planned this time) but will try and see what the race programme says.

You are 100% correct about why we love these meetings. Thanks to TRS and published pics, I am in touch with the current owner of the ex-Longton TVR and the creator of the UK Super Saloons/Modsports website. It is great to be able to publish pics (old and new) that people can identify with and the stories and memories they can bring alive. Makes me happy to know that all the efforts by several contributors is not wasted.

Pity some of us didn't have access to decent equipment and access to certain parts of some tracks donkey's years ago! But hey. that is progress. Bet my dad, God rest his soul, would echo that sentiment. Just imagine what we'd have now if he'd had a DSLR and long lens in the late 1930's instead a plate camera and just a dozen glass plates for the day...

Production Invictas at Thruxton 1968


When paddocks had a sprinkling of interesting cars. You may well have noticed that in all the paddock pics I have posted so far, there is rarely anything other than British cars around.


I had to ferret in the pile of race programmes to confirm the year - January 1971 Racing Car Show. Easy to then get side tracked, skimming through the programmes... There is plenty of good reading to be had with some very interesting articles and often relevant to NZ, at a time when several kiwis were competing in the UK.


British Car day at Western Springs. I think, 1992.


Goodwood Revival 2000. Terrible weather on the Friday and a biting wind on the Saturday. I have a pile of negatives still to be scanned from this meeting.


Prototype Invicta at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, 2004. This must be the only event where I have relatively few action pics but loads of statics. Still a worthwhile event, even if you can't see much of the track.

1) The 'Route 66 Show' alongside Hurn Airport in Bournemouth (UK) July 2nd.

2) The Petersen Museum in Los Angeles

From the Route 66 show. Not really a lot for the purists but certainly a mix. Just the one batch.

Before you ask, Bonito kit car. Originals were VW based but later cars were not. This one is used regularly and possibly in competition.
