For those of you looking to get involved in Historic Muscle Cars, I've just been informed this 1970 Mustang is for sale.
This is an interesting car, with interesting history. It was originally built in the US by Doug Rudy for vintage racing. Doug bought the car in 1993, having seen an ad for a Boss 302 road car. Turns out, it was actually a Mach 1 428 Cobra Jet that had been later fitted with a 289.
Doug built the Mustang as a tribute to the car raced by his good friend Warren Tope, who raced an ex-Bud Moore '70 Mustang fastback in the 1971 and '72 SCCA Trans-Am series. Doug and Warren went to college together, and Doug crewed on this car for Warren. Warren Tope was killed in a racing incident in 1975.
On deciding to build this tribute car, Doug contacted Warren's father Donald Tope, to tell him his plans to build the car, and Don gave him several mementos for the project.
Doug's tribute car was featured in The Cars Of Trans-Am Racing book, written by David Tom.
The Mustang was eventually sold to Craig Harris in Australia, about four years ago, to compete in the Australian Trans-Am series. Craig is from the well known Harris family who took over the large Bryan Byrt Ford dealership in Queensland that ran XB and XC Falcon hardtops for rising star Dick Johnson in the 1970s, and also supported him in the XD in 1980.
Craig had the Mustang fully rebuilt, and went on to win the Australian Trans-Am series, before selling the car to Ian Woodward of Fataz Performance Engines. Woody has driven the car a few times himself, and also had other drivers in the car.
Woody is now building a replica Penske Camaro, so the Mustang is for sale. It can either be raced in ATA, or, with some changes, will fit the HMC rules. The ATA rules differ slightly to those of HMC, most notably the heads. Whereas ATA allows alloy heads, HMC requires cast iron. There are a few other changes that would be required, but nothing too difficult, and is a nicely built and well sorted car for someone to jump into and enjoy.
Woody can be contacted at: fataz_highperformance@bigpond.com

Thanks for posting up photos, always appreciated especially by those of us thousands of miles away and not able to be there.

JAFA, Poul Christie owns the Cortina, he's hot keen to build a Fahey FVA Escort replica for the group. Even tho I was disappointed in the turn out at least the quality was high, new to HMC is David Woods newly finished NASCAR themed 76 Dodge Aspen running for the first time, he had a big following yesterday.
Here is the latest photo from John McKechnie. Paint wise at least it looks to be complete. A real credit to you John and it looks fantastic.
Almost finished, just picked up from signwriters, filing for MSNZ COD now, will be at the Manfeild MG Classic Nov 12/13th with Tony Roberts behind the wheel in the Historic Muscle/Saloon car class. Dale M
Wow that looks awesome Dale! What a great looking car. What width wheels are those? They're a perfect fit.
By the way, congratulations on your new business venture with Carroll Shelby!
Really very nice Dale and with a star driver in it for MG !!!!
The combined Historic Muscle Cars/Historic Saloon Cars entry to date for the MG Classic next month. I'm told both Poul Christie (Cortina Lotus) and Natalie Campbell Parlane (Ford Capri V6), have also entered since.
Unfortunately it appeara Poul Christie won't be racing due to a mechanical issue with the Cortina. However, the following have since entered, bringing the field up to 30 cars:
Natalie Campbell, Capri V6
Bill Ritchie, Alfa Guilia
Colin Campbell, Escort RS2000
Clyde Walters, Mk3 Cortina 2000
