This is Durbanite the late Bruce vd Merwe driving the ex John Love, ex Jack Brabham BT20 Repco at Kyalami in 1971. Bruce was the father of current F1 medical car driver Alan vd Merwe, who was also a successful racing drive, winning the UK 2003 F3 championship. From retroracecars.com when the car was up for auction - "In 1971 famous Brabham exponent Charles Vogele bought the car back to Europe and then sold it to Tom Wheatcroft for his ever expanding Grand Prix Collection. The BT20 remained at Donington until 2010 when the current owner purchased the car. BT20/F1-1-66 is the only BT20 currently racing, the other residing in a museum in France." (The accompanying photo showed a car without the rear wing and front winglets.)

Well known Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato (Reg: SBH209D) in the late 1960's heading down the Avenue at Oulton Park.
Home town boy does well! Jody Scheckter on a lap of honour at Kyalami in a fire truck after winning the 1975 SA GP. He's accompanied by 3rd place driver Patrick Depailler
One of the features of early GP racing was to be able to see the driver "at work". In most of today's racing cars the driver is hunkered down in the cockpit and barely visible. The two photos here, from Kyalami in 1970, show that it was still possible in the early 1970's to see the drivers at work. John Love in the Gunston Surtees TS9 and Bob Olthoff in his Gunston Capri Perana, both looking determined and resolute!
Sports cars dicing at Old Hall corner. Healy 3000 pursued by an MGB.
Some heavy metal at Kyalami in around 1970. Holden Monaro GTS accompanied by Sunbeam Tiger. 5 litres of GM power vs 4.5 litres of Ford power. On a cool down lap after a race with the marshals getting ready to sweep the track.
Formula Ford action at Oulton Park's Old Hall corner, around 1968.

Robert van Zyl in his 1927 Bugatti T35 at the Historics support race for the 1971 SAGP. The car's from an era when you could see everything the driver was doing.

A Chevron B6 rounding Old Hall corner in 1968.
1971 South African F1 GP at Kyalami. Ronnie Peterson in his March Ford. He finished 10th.
This is a mid-1960's Volvo Coupe, which I photographed at the 1971 SA F1 GP meeting.
Chaswin, I really like these - the shape is/was an American Ford / Chev of the late 1930's in scaled down form - very strong mechanicals, I understand, known as the PV544 - as was the later " Amazon " of the late 1960's.
" Volvo Amazon was a mid-sized car manufactured and marketed by Volvo Cars from 1956 to 1970 " - I note that the P122 Amazon was assembled in Durban South Africa.
Enjoying your other photos too - especially the South Africans car that are unique " Perana " etc..
Thanks for sharing.

The first three finishers in the 1971 SA F1 GP.
First - Mario Andretti (Ferrari 312)
Second - Jackie Stewart (Tyrrell)
Third - Clay Regazzoni (Ferrari 312)
Andretti on his lap of honour.
A very nice photo of the Lotus 2.0 litre LV240 DOHC engine (in time this engine would become the Type 907 engine, used to power the Lotus Elite, Esprit, Eclat and Excel), installed in one of only two made Lotus 62. And a shot of the car in action. Odd that the two photos must have been on the same roll of film, but whilst one survived for 50 years in perfect condition, the action shot was badly affected by the ravages of time!
The other Lotus 62 was run by Chris Barber...
This one was driven by John Miles to 3rd place in the 1969 Tourist Trophy. (26/5/1969)
The second placed car in the 1969 Tourist Trophy race at Oulton Park. David Pipers Lola T70, complete with spare wheel!
