The Oulton Park paddock - Guards Spring Cup meeting 12/04/1968. The two cars belong to AC Dean (Racing) Ltd. #64 is the Ferrari 206 Dino driven by Peter Gethin, while 82 is the Porsche Carrera 6 of team owner Tony Dean. Both cars were finished in Red. In the top right is #63, the Chevron GT of John Bridges.

In post #173 of photos taken during a Saturday afternoon testing session at Kyalami, I included a photo of a Capri Perana that was also being tested. I have just come across a photo of the same car actually racing at Kyalami later in 1971, driven by its owner Laurie Ackers. It has a higher stance and higher profile tyres than the dedicated racing Perana's as, according to the Duncan McDonald the local engineer who helped develop the car, "...the car was his regular registered road car and there were regulation limits. I would have liked to see it a lot lower and on lower profile tyres too. That's why it's straight line performance was as quick as any class A Capri V8, but the handling was not as good." The car was finished in the standard Perana yellow and featured a tuned engine with heat treated crank. The photos of the car and its engine were posted on a local website by Duncan and I'm sure he won't mind me posting them here.

In the 1960's and 1970's Kyalami hosted rounds of the local single seater formula. This went in various forms, but in 1971 it featured F1 cars and F5000 cars. The number of entrants varied from race to race but was generally around 12 to 14. In 1971 the 10th Republic Trophy race was held at Kyalami. There were 12 cars entered. While going through my photos recently I realised that I had photos of 8 of the 12 cars. So I thought it might be nice to post them all in one place. Some of these have been posted before. I've also been able to identify the makes and models of the cars, so I've put that info against the individual photos, as well as identifying the driver and entrant.

Two Lola T70 sports cars approaching the bottom of Clay Hill at Oulton Park. I'm not sure when I took this photo. It could be the 1968 Gold Cup meeting, in which case the green car is driven by Michael de'Udy and the leading yellow car by Jo Bonnier.

Not strictly racing cars, although it is cars at Kyalami. A weekend meeting of a local motor club at Kyalami in 1971. The members had a chance to see if they were cut out to be racing drivers by driving their family saloons around the circuit as fast as they dared. An interesting set of contemporary cars!

Thanks Roger. I think both Opel and Holden were GM group companies at the time. Possibly some interaction in the design departments?

At the same club day at Kyalami as the cars pictured above, were a number of races for soap box racers. This was intended to amuse the children in attendance, but the adults had to have a go as well. The races started in front of the Crowthorne Corner stand and went downhill into Barbeque.

1975 South African GP at Kyalami. Marshals recovering one of the Beta Marches at the Jukskei Sweep. Two Marches were entered, for Vittorio Brambilla and the last woman to drive in F1, Italian Lella Lombardi. Both cars retired in the race. I'm not sure which one of the cars is in the photo.

There are times when having a rear engined car can be an advantage. This is a Renault R8 competing in a race in 1970 that took place both off road and on the Kyalami track. Obviously the off road phase did not go well and he crashed head on into an obstacle. No matter- all the important stuff is at the rear and the damage was bang in the middle of the frontend, leaving the suspension presumably unaffected, so he soldiered on. Splendid competitive spirit!

Following on from my previous post of the dented Renault R8, these are some of the other cars I photographed at Kyalami in 1970 as part of the field in the "Lucky Strike Trial", an on and off road rally.

The Ford Taunus was a fully imported car into South Africa. And if you look at the previous post of the R8 with a dent in the front, you'll see an identical R8 (without the dent) in amongst the spectators cars.

Some Mazda RX2's in the Kyalami paddock in 1975, together with an MGA 1600. These must be souped-up as they are competing in class A against the Perana's. A7's driver (Willie Hepburn) is still active in SA historic racing circles I believe.

The 1977 South African F1 GP at Kyalami. Mario Andretti in his Lotus Ford. He retired after 43 laps due to an "accident". From the angle of his rear wing I would guess that he has spun off and damaged the wing which appears to be now generating lift rather than downforce. Iconic JPS livery.

A view of the original Kyalami circuit taken from Leuwkop corner. The right hander is the Kink and leads into the pit straight followed by the fast downhill section into Crowthorne. To the right of the loudspeaker pole can be seen Clubhouse corner. The main straight is now a business park, while the lower section of the old circuit is now the upper section of the new circuit. I took this shot in the early 1970's during a Formula Vee race.
