Hi All,

SPR Models has just received stock of Spark's 1:43rd Lola T70 MkIII driven by soon-to-be-crowned F1 World Champion Denny Hulme and his boss Jack Brabham at the 'BOAC International 500' World Sports Car Championship race at Brands Hatch on the 30th of July 1967.

Sid Taylor Racing entered the 5459cc Chevrolet V8 powered #4 Lola, and the pair qualified on pole against some of the best drivers of the era. And what a driver line up it was! Not only were all the top teams present, forming a full grid of 36 cars, but some of the best F1 drivers were signed-up to race. There were three works 4.0 litre Ferrari P4’s for Stewart, Amon & Scarfiotti; a Ferrari 412 P Coupe for Attwood & Piper; Porsche had five works cars for top drivers including Hill, Rindt, Siffert, McLaren, Elford, Herrmann & Neerpasch; Hill & Spence were in the Chaparral 2F; Miles & Oliver drove the now-famous works Lotus 47 snorkel car; John Wyer entered a Gulf-Mirage driven by Rodriguez & Thompson, with five privately-entered GT40’s running in a supporting role; Brian Redman was in a Chevron B5; and of course there was the ubiquitous Lola T70 - the Hulme/Brabham car, plus a 5650cc Chevrolet V8 powered MkIIIB for Surtees & Hobbs which qualified second on the grid beside Hulme.

After the first hour of frantic, cut & thrust racing - it seems no one had informed the drivers that this was in fact a 6 hour endurance race - Hulme, while leading, was forced to pit with a broken rocker-arm, and unfortunately later had to retire with a suspected bent valve and blown clutch. But the race continued to trill and had the crowd on its feet for 211 hard-fought laps, attested to by the battle scars worn by most of the front-runners. Finally it was Phil Hill who brought his bewinged 7.0 litre Chaparral 2F (with its automatic transmission) over the line in first place.

Spark's 1:43rd model - complete with tiny black Kiwi on the side - is beautifully hand-crafted in resin, with numerous photo-etched parts. It is mounted on a wooden plinth, and is protected by a clear acrylic display case.

Note : In the same shipment we also received stock of the #2 Surtees/Hobbs Lola from the same race (Spark S1391).

Both models are available for just $79.00 from our new online store at www.spr-models.co.nz
