That makes sense Ken. It therefore seems to have been a converted 250F Maserati, rather than the real Tec-Mec which basically was a follow on from the 250F but had a 250F engine.
Was it merely the name they used on the NZ car and if so, why? I know that there are NZ Chevrons and UK Chevrons for example, but Tec-Mec seems a strange name to use considering it was a shortened version of the full company name - Studio Tecnica Meccanica.
Looking a the NZ 1963 photo above, it doesn't look like the original Tec Mec which was a slightly smaller, lighter, version of the 250F. A follow up or continuation if you like.
The NZ photo seems to me to be a full sized, original 250F. Maybe Jim Barclay would know?

As this weekend's Legends meeting was cancelled, I expect next week's Caffeine & Classics to be cancelled, it's a slim time for new photographs, so a reliance on the archives and maybe I'll get back to more scanning and filing?
I'm just hoping and praying that the Goodwood Revival goes ahead and that I'll be able to get there. Flights are booked and paid for.

Ray, and the "lovely wife"please keep these coming. It's helping some of us who are now into second week of a 4 MONTH lockdown stay remotely sane. I suspect there will be bugger all in the sideboard by the time we come out of this. Right now I can't even register for food delivery as a 70 year old here in Outer Pongolia as the system is overloaded. Most likely the pyjama mummas getting more bog rolls, now the McDonalds is closed and they don't know how to feed their gluttony.I'm officially a "Vun rubble" as the radio announcers can't pronounce the English language.

One of my very best ex-work buddies, lives in Norfolk (ex grade 1 police driver), has been looking after his wheelchair-bound wife, who has MS, and has been doing so for 25 years now.
Bad enough having a restricted life anyway, without family being able to come in to assist, so we are just counting our blessings.
Gave up trying to go to the supermarket or veg shop as the queues were horrendous, but the local butcher (who we don't normally use - normally too expensive) there was just one person being served, so we bought bacon and home made sausages. Two doors away, fresh fish shop and no queue so bought two large fillets of snapper.
Keep smiling chaps.
Meanwhile, any requests for cars, events, locations etc., will be considered for this thread!
ERC, do have any pictures of the 76,77,78 shellsport f5000 series in the UK? would love to see them if possible. thanks
Hi 928, I may have some, but so far, I have only ever published one on here, and I suspect that I don't have many of a decent quality.
I have posted this before, from 1976 but I'll see what I haven't yet scanned. It was a time when I was actively competing in sprints and hillclimbs, so I didn't go to too many race meetings.

Ray, we have an ocean full of large snapper up here & boat full of fuel & bait & lot's of time & no waiting at the boat ramp & calm water & not allowed to go fishing so am going to go to yard with fishing rod & a couple of beer's & sit in boat for a couple of hours, stay safe

2012 - Monaco. The mid 1950's sports racing cars are amongst my favourites, as they coincide with my first visits to Mallory Park, at a time when it was either sports cars or single seaters - no saloons.

Felday was a very interesting 4WD device wasn't it. Maybe even driven by Jim Clark.

I have it as an Elva Michael. You can vaguely see the bonnet badge. I'm afraid that with the advent of the Lotus 23, sports car racing changed forever and the cars all started to look the same.
I think the Felday has been discussed on here before, but as initially, I didn't keep a record of what I had posted, one or two of the earlier postings may reappear. Jim Clark did indeed drive the Felday, but not sure when without consulting Google. (Added: Jim Clark drove the car in 1966 - Guards Trophy Race.)
I noted in my diary for 27/12/1965 - it was the only entry worth transcribing to the old diary spreadsheet I have been building - that it was the first time out and beat the McLaren Elvas at Brands Hatch - televised. Won 1 race and second in another (to a McLaren). According to my diary, an 1880cc engine (probably BRM). Also reverting to my diary, apparently the first day I wore a string vest!!! I'm sure that conjures up an image you'd rather forget.
"Departing from previous Felday spaceframe chassis practice, Westbury built a sheet-steel 'monocoque' backbone structure for his 'Mark 4' with the BRM V8 engine turned about-face at the rear, clutch at the front. A short propeller shaft then ran forward to the Ferguson FF gearbox and control unit, mounted in unit with the front-drive assembly. A jointed prop-shaft then ran back from the control unit under the engine's left-side cylinder bank to a rear-drive differential unit."
The car was built by Peter Westbury (this was Felday 4) and the driving often shared with a Channel Island co-worker, Mac Daghorn, who I think drove the car in that first race.

Thank you Ray. Having guessed wrong with the Elva, what about the #34. No badge there so my stab is either a BT5 or BT8 Brabham, if it's not a Lotus 19!.
You are quite right about the Lotus 23 defining the shape of the majority of small bore sports racers from that time - the Crossle 7S was an Irish version on a similar theme
Chocolate fish Michael. Brabham it is. I have to say that I was rather glad they dropped that class for 2018, as it isn't a class that really interests me too much, certainly not photographically, apart from the much missed local Festivals, where they did add variety to the grids.
I'm picking these out in alphabetical order in bunches, just in case there is no real logic to the posts, then they sort themselves out in date order.

Denny was at Goodwood. Both finished second

1970 - Brian Martin with his Martin.
"The driver/constructor himself had bought his first car – an MG TA – at the age of 18. He used it for sprint events but wanted more power so installed a Ford 105E engine with which he began circuit racing in 1962. His MG-Ford hybrid became known as the Martin BM1. His replacement BM2 was a Lotus 7 modified with independent rear suspension and a Diva body, while the BM3 featured a Martin-designed body on that same chassis. The Martin BM4 was a 1967 GT car, BM5 a 1968 GT Coupé powered by a 1500cc pushrod Ford engine (later a twin-cam), while BM6 was the 1969 GT Coupé with 2-litre BMW engine and Hewland FT200 transaxle, and the BM7 originally its open sports-prototype replacement for 1970."
Nicely turned out. He came from Essex way then moved to Wakefield Yorkshire. Above from a Bonham's blurb on the attractive Martin GT which was up for sale.

Chapman conquered F1, F2, F3, Junior, FF for a bit, Indianapolis, small engine sports cars (i.e. up to circa 2.5 litres), the Tasman series and of course contributed to the iconic Lotus-Cortina. There will be other things I haven't mentioned as well.
But 'big' engined sports cars eluded him. The Lotus 30/40 (I will refrain from the normal quoting of R.Ginther - if indeed it was him) wasn't even attractive so arguably had nothing really going for it.
Funnily enough, because it wasn't dominant, I always had a bit of a soft spot for the Lotus 30. Considering it wasn't successful in period, good to see a few racing now.

Wouldn't it be great if we could have meetings that comprised HMC, HSC, Historic Sports Sedans, Pre 65's, Central Muscle Cars, F5000 etc.
Unfortunately I find myself going to fewer events these days because I don't want to spent a whole day at the track when there's really only one class I want to watch.
It probably doesn't matter so much if you are a competitor, but if you're a spectator like me, you want to watch what interests you, and not some boring classes that hold absolutely no interest for you at all.
Generally agree Nigel. However, look at the average grid sizes for some of those classes (I did say average) and unfortunately, since the original Festivals, there haven't been too many meetings a year with a decent turnout. In fact, most of the grids at some of the Festivals were also rather small.
Some drivers are now only doing 4 or 5 meetings a year and some of them are being spread around the country. The days of racing most weekends are long gone, and that also means for spectators.
I have no idea of what it now costs to put on a meeting at HD for example, but way back when I was organising, we needed a $12,000 income to break even, from six classes. Costs have rocketed since then - plus driver costs (CoD has jumped to $350!) so grids are not going to improve anytime soon.
That is why I now try and get to the Goodwood Revival every two years. To see a range of cars I like - and most, we never see down here anyway - and that also goes for many in the pre 1966 car park. Many real rarities to be found there.

shame you could not spend more time at brands hatch. i reckon it was one of the best tracks in the uk. the long track that is, the short track is very visible and technical for drivers, but the long track has it all.
Like any long track that disappears into the woods, better for drivers than spectators - unless televised that is. But agree, the Brands long track looks interesting.
I'd like to revisit Cadwell Park now I have a camera with a longer lens. In some respects, an even better track than Brands.

Yes, I'm sure we'll catch up one day. I still have my fingers crossed about Goodwood Revival this year, but they keep evading my query "If we are unable to fly because of restrictions, either here or USA/GB, but the meeting still goes ahead, or is shifted to a new date, do we get 100% refund on the ticket?"
Goodwood Festival of Speed, it was always so difficult to get track photos of the cars so the majority are static shots.

This is page 1 of an Autocar road test from 1952. The car shown in Ray's post is a later model but at least this shows what they were called back in the day. Hardly the fastest thing on the road - standing quarter mile in 23.2sec

Regarding the Racing Car Show - in 1983 I lived in Sinclair Rd, right behind London Olympia. In fact I walked past the place almost daily and imagined days gone by of racing car shows that I'd been reading about since the 60s.
Ken, 1973 would have been a great year to be there too - plenty of options for F2/F3/Atlantic and Group 6 on top of F1, maybe some Can-Am and Indy McLarens and a ton of Formula Fords.
Would one day be enough?

Agree Ken! I'm only on two pills at the moment, one with food and one at bedtime. Keep forgetting the one with food! Wish this knockdown would soon finish as they are only temporary until the surgeon re-opens for business and hopefully does a more permanent fix. Hair is getting to Bernie E's lengths...
Memory is somewhat erratic these days, but having kept a full page diary from 1964-1969, 1990 to date, reading the 1965 diary is more about girls I was rather fond of and ongoing hassles with my first motorised transport - an LE Velocette. Reading them now, is a magical memory refresher though.
Currently trying to unravel the Green family ancestral history. Jeez, the number of times Jonathan & John Green's who had sons also named John & Jonathan even in a small area of Norfolk, and the number of infant deaths, is quite staggering. digging around 1700 to 1730 at the moment.
Just glad to be alive these days and lucky enough to have lived through what many will see as the golden years of motorsport.

The closest I got to Norfolk was driving up to Hethel to be interviewed for a position at Team Lotus by Peter Warr in 1973 and another trip to a meet at Snetterton later that year. Was I close to where you were and the girls you were fond of ?
BTW; At the moment I am doing pre-op preparations to have my complete L. knee replaced next week as elective surgeries are starting up again around here.
My wife is a bit hesitant but I just want to at least be able to walk out to get the paper in the morning once again.

"A new monster car based on an old shape appeared from the Hill stable for 1976 with the creation of a VW Beetle like no other. Based on a F5000 Trojan T102 and powered by the 530 bhp Smith-Chevrolet V8 from the March, rebuilt by Hill.
Its freakish body and overall statement caused a huge amount of interest. It took Hill back in Super Saloons for the next 2 seasons. It took a while for Hill to make it a race winner but he did, helped by sponsorship from track rival and friend Tony Hazelwood's Templar Tillers company. At the end of 1977 he sold the creature to Doug Niven and the car continued to be a winner with a remarkable 47 wins, before going onto Jeff Wilson."
Mick Hill was very much a local hero, and first came to prominence with a Jaguar powered Anglia that initially he purchased, but then rebuilt.
The list of car's he built and raced was most impressive - and he was a telephone engineer, not an automotive engineer, by profession.
He passed away aged 70 in 2014.

There was a time when it was the tyres that filled the wheel arches, rather than wheels! Sadly, this car came to grief at the exit to Madgwick. That is two of these cars cars that have had crunches at Goodwood.

I don't like your chances of Goodwood Ray. It's not looking good over here, at long last quarantine (14 days for all except Ireland) would seem to be on the cards, although the lack of clarity in last evenings Boris address is confusing at best. I wonder what airline pilots have to do!
I have been in touch with Goodwood, twice, to find out what the story is regarding a refund if we are unable to travel. The silence has been deafening.

" ANCO " - unusual long and low rear engine style in a front engine car - driver sots low and well back. an interesting car, I like it.
Driven by Brian Toft - who may well have built it. Monoposto formula as I recall. Beautifully presented car too. Not the sharpest of pics unfortunately - though that could have been the scanner.
I have today, cancelled my planned UK/Goodwood trip, as word is that the Revival will also be a victim of Covid19.
Hopefully, I'll make it 2021.

ERC, a great photo of the Cooper Bristol - a couple were in New Zealand in the 1950's and this one was found in Hamilton in the 1990's by my grandson aged around 10 - He is now 35. Into Cars and lately Bikes too.

Somewhat of an irony that Grant told me the nose on the Capella was moulded from a Brabham when originally built.

That's Ian Garmey in his cooper at the back of the queue. I asked him if he remembered the car and got this reply
I’m sure that is the Daimler Special built by Don Ammon who lived then not far from where you are now, on the road between Kopu and Paeroa. Don moved to Nelson some years ago and I often wondered what had happened to that car. That looks like Don in the car. It will be interesting to see what else results from Ray’s appeal on the Roaring Season. Quite a nice looking car.
The event was the Auckland Domain Hillclimb held on May 1, 2005.
I have it down as May 7th 2006! Thanks for that Milan - and Ian. Great use of a Daimler grille too.

There was a Domain Hillclimb on May 7, 2006, but Ian has a certificate from 2005 and can't recall competing there more than once. Maybe his memory is playing tricks with him as it does for many of us these days.
The joys of digital photography Milan! We don't have to spend hours and hours doing intense detective work - to find the date anyway.
Definitely 2006, 1:11pm. Gee, life would have been so much easier when cataloguing over 400 negative films and goodness knows how many slides. My problem with Dad's stuff, and some of my own, is that he would often peel off a length of bulk film stock in the works darkroom, load it into a cassette, which therefore meant no frame numbers or any other identification. It also meant that there may be 18 negs on the film or 40!
Dad also had a collection of about 625 cameras and wasn't averse to swapping a part used strip of film and reloading it into another camera, then back again, whilst also running another roll of film. This meant accurate dating of a lot of his stuff was near impossible.
Fortunately, when I grabbed his Leica, which I used for several years, he wasn't taking many photographs as the family had grown up.

I believe there were two Gordon Keebles in NZ, the blue one (which I last saw with Minilite wheels, up for sale at the rear of the Victoria Market for about $60,000, quite a few years ago), a white one, DQY 804, which may have popped up on Trade Me not too long ago and I'm fairly sure there was another that was mentioned when the subject was last raised, possibly a maroon one being restored in Tauranga.
There again, it could be my old memory playing tricks - again.

There was one used as a course car at Pukekohe back in the 60s which I thought was the coolest car I had ever seen. Still do actually. My failing memory thinks it was blue.

The Gordon Keeble KS92 was one that I looked at buying in the late 1980s - it was the ex-Sir Roberston Stewart car from Christchurch. He was the PDL racing patron and the Minilite wheels came from one of the versions of the PDL Mustang and the guards were slightly flared to accommodate them. Took the car for a long drive out west and recollect it was very good but seemed to have some bump steer and the handbrake was almost impossible to operate as it was tucked down between the seat and the console.

The Total garage/petrol station, was, many years earlier, where dad met mum for the first time. He was assisting on the garage forecourt when she appeared needing the tyres pumped up on her bike.
Later, this was the base for 'Roys Motors', who bought two ratty old double deckers for our school run. Roy and his lovely wife lived in the bungalow, before selling up and moving to South Africa. It then changed to Speeds, Volvo dealers, before the whole lot was demolished for flats.

Great! Are you able to take the boxes of NZCC mags? I'll probably be at C & C and with a 'For Sale' sign in the Cooper S. 2002 with just 41,000kms on the clock, NZ new, manufactured to order, with black leather upholstery. Need to slim down the collection. Marcos will be next, but after a bit of TLC has been applied - and a WoF.
I am in Chatswood, so easy for you to collect.

ERC is relieved, or has been relieved of the Six Boxes of the NZCC mags - yesterday. They now live in Hillcrest in my Late Uncle's workshop
Spent a couple of hours today sorting through them - found a few with Austin Healey articles as well as Triumph's.
So some stories to come.

The Haig Citroen Special in Green next to the Watson Lycoming, other Lycoming is the Rutherford Car - all still exist and are restored/rebuilt.
Not sure if the Rutherford Car is fully done, but looks like it from the last photo in the post.

Nice try, as you said Ray :) It has been covered so many times, in so many places. Roger Dowding that's me at Leadfoot.
That Lancia tricked me, more research shows Marino as somewhat of a special builder, as well as working with some of the big names like Dante Giacosa, but I have yet to find any more about the car itself. It still looks like anFJ sized car though when somewhat natural inclination was to think of the D50 series.
Apparently it ran only one non championship race, 160 BHP with a Aurelia engine.

M - British Road - so many here that I'll run it for a few days.
Marcos - say no more... note the twist to the bonnet. There must be a story behind that as when I purchased the car, the bonnet must have been replaced at some stage as the plywood hinges were nowhere near level. After the bang at Pukekohe when I rebuilt the bonnet front, I managed to straighten it up. Alongside is the Mini Marcos that was restored for Adrian Blackburn, road legal only the day of Targa scrutineering.

If you run your mouse over any of my pics Roger, the image name should crop up - in which case, it is year (3 digits - so 216 = 2016), followed by month (2 digits) and day of the month (2 digits) followed by a sequence number for the day - 2, 3 or at Goodwood, 4 digits.
So the picture of Rhys at Leadfoot is 7th February 2016, sequence 588.

Ray has answered that for you, however also ran it as a demonstration at Roycroft in the "Grand Prix of Yesteryear" which was intended as a demonstration of cars that could have run against each other in the period. The actual cars, not those of a similar type, so for example a Cooper 500 had to be one in the country, at the time, not a fresh import, even from the 60s.
I have been invited back each year since too maybe one day I'll make it again, if the NZ Government lets Shelly, Rod's wife in.

My logic Roger, is that I can scan old photographs (car and non-car) and however they are stored from then on, they will always list in date order, which is why I have often posted queries on here and have been very grateful for Milan and others, giving the date some certainty.
If the pics are taken by family members for example, then if it is brother Dave, 216_0207_01, becomes 216_0207d_01, which stops it overwriting my own.
Until I have a date, even a rough one, the pics really can't be filed. Very tough with old slides.
There has to be a logic when there are over 50,000 car pics alone plus family and travel pics (and increasing).

Mercedes - why this pic? The number plate tells it all. C 13 OBE has to be read as CB OBE - owned by Chris Barber, OBE, my all time favourite jazz band leader. A real enthusiast having owned many interesting cars and raced a Lotus Elite, in the UK and in Germany. He finally hung up his trombone August 2019, aged 89. Good friends with Bernie Ecclestone (same age) and Sir Jackie Stewart.
Chris got done for speeding in the UK two or three years ago - twice in two days on the M6. Clocked at 96mph going to a gig and 94mph returning... Usually had Brabus modified Mercs as daily drivers.

Ray, I'm surprised by the very few McLarens.
I'm usually only showing 1 per make Rhys, often the first that I haven't shown before. You could say the same about Coopers, or BMW's.
With over 50,000 in the pile, I'm just working through the alphabet and will do so again when I get to the Z's, especially as there's no Revival this year, where I'd normally take several thousand pics. Caister Museum was also on my itinerary and that would have yielded quite a few 'new' pics, especially of vintage and also steam powered vehicles.

Very intersting car. This is the Maserati 450S Costin Coupe, built for Le Mans 1956, and driven by Stirling Moss.
the car was designed by Franck Costin on a 450S chassis, for which he entirely redesigned the body, cockpit, ducting etc... The car was really complex and innovative, but with the short time left to Zagato for building it after Costin's design, the italians totally passed by the purposeful specificities of the design. Moreover, the full plexiglass roof originally planned was abandonned for Le Mans safety rules reasons.
When Costin arrived at Le Mans to discover the finnished car, Colin Chapman, with a big smile, suggested him to go have a look at his sieve, considering all the holes the italians had cut into the originally sleek body.
Moss came to Costin telling him the ductings for the radiator and for fresh air in the cockpit were bodged so hot air was now going into the carburettor intakes... Instead, Zagato put an airscoop which was too small, and far from the site of maximum air pressure.
The result was a car which was not even faster than a standard 450s Maserati.
We could go on and on about the mistakes made from the original design, like the windscreen wiper used which probably came for an average Fiat parked at the factory instead of a specially sourced aircraft one from De Havilland, the lack of underbody enclosure, or the fuel filler sticking up like a flag pole...
Still, the car was very fast, but only pulling 6200rpm instead of the 7000 expected.
Unfortunately, the 2 Maserati 450s entered finally retired because of a rear axle failure.
The car was later stripped of the internals and scrapped at the factory.
In 1958, an American bought the car, and restored it with Fantuzzi, to put it on the road. In spite of a lot of modifications, like an 25cm longer wheelbase, the car was used on the road, which must have been quite a beast with nearly 200mph.
Unfortunately, the original design of Franck Costin never had the chance to compete, which would have had a serious chance of winning at Le Mans.

"The Marina Rolls Royce was the brainchild of Alan Mann then running Andrews Garage in Southwick and later to become better known for being the proprietor of Alan Mann Racing. The Marina was designed and built by Malcolm King who had sold it to Alan and Brian Mann Its multi-tubular spaceframe chassis carried a conventional front-mounted radiator and its main longeron tubes performed double duty, carrying coolant to and from the Rolls-Royce power unit. Girling discs brakes were fitted, while the front and rear suspension systems were essentially Formula 1 Cooper, and it was Alan and Brian Mann who managed to cram the 6 litre Rolls Royce engine into the multi-tubular spaceframe chassis in much the same way as the Cooper King Cobra. The result was a well balanced car with a low frontal area."

Our Rovers, a few year's back. Both excellent trouble free secondhand cars I might add - 1999. The MR2 MRS plate was originally bought for my wife's Toyota MR2. At the Auckland launch of the MGF, I enquired about 'MRS 2 MR', so I acquired that too.
Left - 214 Cabriolet - which was a lively performer. Rover 420GSi on the right. Last saloon before switching to Land Rover Freelanders.

...and the only family car we ever had in the UK - and that didn't last long, as it had an appetite for half shafts. Effectively scrapped for 5 quid in 1965. Now only about a dozen left in the world.
Singer - taken from a glass quarter plate negative, probably 1952. Note the radio aerial, but I can't remember it having a radio, even though Dad, ex Royal Signals, was a part time radio repairer.
