Thread: Who What and Where?

  1. #421
Spent weekend down on North Shore attending a 60th of a gentleman who has been in the States for about 30 years and meet a heap of old friends and stayed at one of their lovely places. He also has some old photos of cars he has had from yesteryears. Also a big shed with some unreal toys stored away. Will put these on Scrapbook thread as well. Ok first photos, it was red, six pipes out left side and went well. Who, What (easy), Where.

That is a beautiful, very straight looking MK2. Would it still be in his garage?

No the car is not unfortunately, I think Robin Tanner raced it after this person.
It was built by a well know person in Matamata.
Bry not Bill but he knew him well, raced outboard tunnels before importing (1986 world offshore champs in Auckalnd) the then top boat in class in world which changed the configuration of NZ offshore.

Bought from Cedric Price from Matamata who was a friend of Brians. Cedric had a car paint shop in those days and then went into a car yard which had the infamous Fridge Club attached.

No not Ginger but became good mates through boat racing. His mechanic (had a shop on North Shore Wairau Rd) was later to co-drive the offshore boat and also prepared Gingers jet boats. He rode with Ginger in early. But after they had gone bush in the marathon down Palmerston way, about 10 metres into bush before a bigger tree finally stopped them he decided a bigger boat and more room to manouvre was a better choice.

OK our MK11 mystery man went on to dabble with car racing and this was his next little beauty. He drove it occasionally but it was driven mostly by Colin Reed with a fair bit of success. Auckland Car Club Championship Etc. He did most of the work on it himself and set it all up. (this was way before boats came on the scene) At this stage he had just opened a timber yard in Target Rd North Shore

There you go Bry the boat and the team after a race, this is called 'stress relief"
Left to right, You know him, Ross Tebbs, Bruce Torrance and Ken Grant

Ken was the engine guru, he did alot of engines for different boats. Ross payed the bills and owned/drove Jesse, Bruce has been in the States for age's and is working on the space programme for tourist trips. Bruce is a very good fabricator. I was in charge of cleaning and entertainment.

That pic looks fairly intense Rod - did Ross ever get you to put down your beer and take you for a spin?

Of course, you actually needed a beer or something after to settle. We learnt early on to always pack extra undies and tissues.
